“Fuel of the Future” law highlights Brazil’s commitment to sustainable aviation

Brazil, October 8, 2024: Embraer congratulates the Brazilian Government and the National Congress for the approval and sanction of the “Fuel of the Future” law, which today introduces a legal framework to promote the production and use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). The initiative highlights Brazil’s commitment to the future of sustainable aviation and the nation’s potential to remain a global leader in biofuels, generating jobs, income, technology, and exports. “We are confident that Brazil will soon be part of this value chain, producing and exporting sustainable aviation fuel,” said Francisco Gomes Neto, President and CEO of Embraer. “The approval of the ‘Fuel of the Future’ law demonstrates that the country has all the conditions to be a global leader in the production and use of SAF, and we are honored to be able to collaborate with this strategic debate.” The large-scale use of SAF allows for a reduction in carbon emissions of up to 80% when compared to fossil fuels. Embraer believes that a fleet replacement by more efficient aircraft, such as the E2 family, combined with the use of sustainable fuel, are the most effective immediate initiatives for decarbonizing the aviation sector. Currently, all Embraer aircraft are approved to use a blend of up to 50% of SAF mixed with conventional jet fuel. In 2004, Embraer certified and began serial production of the ethanol-powered Ipanema agricultural aircraft and has advanced in research on biofuels for aviation over the last two decades. Main activities include the process of qualifying new technological routes for the development of SAF, flight tests, and the formulation of studies to promote their production in Brazil in order to contribute to the technical discussion on this topic.

Asia Pacific Airlines August 2024 Traffic Results

Kuala Lumpur, 1st October 2024: Preliminary August 2024 traffic figures released today by the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) revealed robust growth in international air passenger demand, even as traffic volumes approached pre-pandemic levels. On the back of the region’s resilient economic growth, Asia Pacific airlines collectively carried 32.3 million international passengers in August, reflecting a 21.7% year-on-year increase compared to the same month last year. Traffic in the region had nearly resumed to pre-pandemic levels, at 96.1% of 2019 volumes. Demand in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) increased by 20.7% while available seat capacity expanded by 19.7% year-on-year, leading to a 0.7 percentage point increase in the average international passenger load factor to 83.2% for the month. Despite signs of moderation in the broader manufacturing sector, the surge in e-commerce demand out of the major manufacturing hubs in the region drove air cargo volumes higher. International air cargo demand, as measured in freight tonne kilometres (FTK), recorded a 12.2% year-on-year increase, outpacing the 10.4% expansion in offered freight capacity. As a result, the average international freight load factor rose by 0.9 percentage points to 59.6% for the month, marking the fourth consecutive monthly increase after more than two years in decline. Commenting on the results, Mr. Subhas Menon, AAPA Director General said, “During the first eight months of the year, the region’s carriers saw a 36% growth in the number of international passengers carried reaching a total of 240 million, boosted by increased air connectivity and less restrictive visa policies.” “During the same period, international air cargo demand surged by 15% year-on-year, driven by several key factors, including a thriving e-commerce sector. Disruptions in ocean freight logistics also encouraged modal shifts from sea to air, as businesses sought faster and more reliable transport alternatives.” Looking ahead, Mr. Menon said, “Supported by ongoing expansions in connectivity, travel demand is expected to remain healthy on routes within and across the regions. Similarly, the outlook for air cargo markets is positive, with businesses replenishing inventories in preparation for the year-end festive season.” Mr. Menon added, “Nevertheless, persistent supply chain disruptions continue to pose challenges to the region’s carriers. Delays in aircraft deliveries, shortages of spare parts and lack of skilled labour have heightened operational pressures, contributing to flight disruptions, further increasing costs. Faced with such external pressures, airlines are carefully managing flight frequencies and schedules, without compromising the industry’s excellent safety standards.”

Air India Express completes merger with AIX Connect

GURUGRAM, 01 October 2024: Air India Group has completed the operational integration and legal merger of Air India Express Ltd and AIX Connect Pvt Ltd (erstwhile AirAsia India) into a larger Low-Cost Carrier. The formation of the merged entity, which will operate under the ‘Air India Express’ name and a unified airline code IX, marks a significant milestone in the transformation journey of Air India Group, which is merging four airlines into two. The group is simultaneously in the process of merging Vistara into Air India to set up a world-class global airline. The merger process for Air India Express was completed in less than a year since the airline’s refreshed brand was unveiled. It involved the harmonisation of operational manuals, as an enabler for the merger, and the transfer of Air operator certificates (AOCs). Given the complexity of such a merger, it required close working with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), who supported and monitored the process throughout. The merger also received support of Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and other key stakeholders. On Tuesday, Vikram Dev Dutt, Director General, DGCA, handed over the updated AOC to Aloke Singh, Managing Director, Air India Express, in the presence of Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer of Air India and Chairman, Air India Express, at the DGCA headquarter in New Delhi. Vikram Dev Dutt, Director General, DGCA, said: “The successful integration and merger of AIX Connect with Air India Express is commendable and serves as a benchmark for airline mergers. India’s rapid evolution into the world’s third largest aviation market calls for a robust regulatory regime. Accomplishing this milestone given the complexities involved, is testimony to the efforts put in by teams from both the DGCA and the operator.” A live tracker created by the Flight Standards Directorate of DGCA with a dedicated team for continuous monitoring of the progress of the harmonisation process has been instrumental in achieving the challenging task in a time-bound manner. Aloke Singh, Managing Director, Air India Express, said: “About a year ago, we started the integration of AIX Connect and Air India Express, bringing the two organisations together behind a common brand. Alongside, we worked on the complex integration exercise culminating today in the operational and legal merger of the two organisations. The close collaboration amongst DGCA, BCAS, and MoCA, AIX and group leadership teams and many other colleagues were instrumental in the success of this exercise.” Campbell Wilson, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of Air India and Chairman, Air India Express, said: “The integration of AIX Connect with Air India Express is an important milestone in Air India’s Vihaan.ai transformation journey. The merged entity will cater to the growing demand for air travel around India and in the region, especially amongst the country’s aspirational youth looking for fresh and more appealing value products. This merger will be followed by the merger of Vistara into Air India on 12 November. We look forward to working with the guidance of DGCA to conclude it seamlessly.” With the merger completed, Air India Express will focus on a future growth and transformation agenda. The airline’s fleet size has already grown to 88 aircraft, with nearly four new aircraft continuing to join each month. The fleet is expected to cross 100 aircraft by the end of the current financial year, with a network footprint spanning across India, Gulf and Southeast Asia. The number of routes AIX operates has risen from 74 to 171, and passenger carriage has increased by over 400% since the take-over of Air India by Tata group in early 2022. In October 2023, the airline unveiled the unified brand ‘Air India Express’. Since then, flights operated by AIX Connect have also been marketed under the ‘Air India Express’ brand, with necessary regulatory approval.
