Domestic air passenger traffic in June 2022 marginally lower than pre-Covid levels : ICRA

New Delhi, 14th July 2022: • Pent-up demand aided international passenger traffic for Indian carriers to notably surpass pre-Covid levels • For June 2022, the average daily departures were at ~2,771, notably higher than the average daily departures of ~1,056 in June 2021 • Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, due to ongoing geo-political issues linked to Russia-Ukraine conflict, a likely threat to the recovery process With return to normalcy in the business environment, the domestic passenger traffic grew by 2.39 times Y-o-Y to ~10.5 million in June 2022 (3.1 million in June 2021) and was only ~12% lower compared to ~12.0 million in June 2019 (pre-Covid level). On a sequential basis, however, the domestic air passenger traffic in June 2022 was ~13% lower compared to ~12.1 million in May 2022, primarily due to the seasonality impact related to the re-opening of schools. The airlines’ capacity deployment for June 2022 was 1.6 times higher than in June 2021 (83,124 departures in June 2022 against 31,693 departures in June 2021). On a sequential basis, the number of departures in June 2022 was lower by around 4% compared to May 2022. As per a recent report released by ICRA and commenting further, Mr. Suprio Banerjee, Vice President & Sector Head, ICRA said, “For June 2022, the average daily departures were at ~2,771, notably higher than the average daily departures of ~1,056 in June 2021, and marginally lower compared to ~2,784 in May 2022. The average number of passengers per flight during June 2022 was 127, lower than an average of 140 passengers per flight in May 2022 and an average of 139 passengers per flight in June 2019. The recovery in passenger traffic is expected to be relatively faster in FY2023 with the return to normalcy situation; however, an overhang of any further Covid wave looms on the sector and will be monitorable. Elevated ATF prices aggravated by geo-political issues will remain a near-term challenge for the industry and will continue to weigh on the profitability of Indian carriers. The recent depreciation of rupee has further added to the industry woes, given around 35-50% of the airlines’ operating expenses are denominated in US$. Also, led by rising ATF prices, the yields for the airlines have started inching up and are estimated to have moved up by around 20% over the last year. With the resumption of scheduled international operations since March 27, 2022, and reversion to bilaterally-agreed capacity entitlements, the international passenger traffic for Indian carriers is on a growth trajectory and surged to ~2.1 million in June 2022, which has notably surpassed the international passenger traffic of ~1.8 million witnessed in June 2019 (pre-Covid level) by ~18%. An area of concern remains, that of ATF prices which have surged by ~120% on a Y-o-Y basis in mid-June 2022, given the elevated crude oil prices, due to geo-political issues arising from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The rising ATF prices will pose a serious threat to the industry earnings in FY2023. On an aggregate basis, a return to normalcy will lead to recovery in passenger load factors, which in turn will aid revenues; however, elevated ATF prices will continue to weigh on the earnings of Indian carriers in FY2023.

Cabin Crew 2022: The Next Generation

AW/Feature: On the occasion of “International Cabin Crew Day 2022,” Megha Singhania,Head of Cabin Crew Department with Air Asia has shared an authored article highlighting the role and contribution of cabin crew in successful operation of a flight and factors that makes her job so special and attractive. Working in the Air The Covid-19 pandemic triggered an ironic if not an unusual pattern amongst millennials and the Gen Z crowd. People across the world were quitting jobs by the dozen and were in search of newer spaces where communication, recognition and growth were in sync with their ability to maintain a personal life. Working as part of the Tata Group is nothing short of a privilege and an honor, owing to the brand’s distinction as one of the most employee-friendly conglomerates that evokes a sense of trust, credibility, and integrity worldwide. With the opportunities and work-life balance that the aviation industry brings with it, millennials and Generation Z are leaning towards being a part of the cabin crew. This is because being employed as a cabin crew member requires a collaborative effort where all members are working towards a single solid goal – to enhance guest experience. Each member clearly understands the duties assigned and is trained to assist their fellow crew in activities for a safe flight. This team-player environment enables the workforce of today to look forward to being cabin crew aspirants more than ever. Becoming an AirAsia India cabin crew member extends beyond a service role – the airline has the highest safety rating of 7/7 with a zero-incident report from airlineratings.com. It is a role and lifestyle that is inspirational and coveted across the world, with extensive travel and flying allowances for the crew and immediate family. Millennials and Generation Z want to feel connected to the people they work for. They are willing to stick with a company if they know they can grow, have authentic communication, receive recognition, and are free to be creative and autonomous. Unlike the desk job, being a cabin crew member does not require chasing deadlines to complete a project. Your work is structured as per your flying roster, and you can plan your personal life accordingly. Besides this, you have the most beautiful office at 35000 feet above sea level with an opportunity to work with different people every day. Traveling to beautiful destinations and exploring new cultures and cuisines is a bonus. Challenges Ahead The aviation industry is known to be dynamic. One of the major challenges that millennials will have to face is adapting to the nature of duty that the industry demands. To counter this, airline companies have provided schedules where one does get the sufficient rest needed. Time management and the ability to be agile is therefore a key solution to adapt to timelines not known to industries outside. Being in the best of your health is of paramount importance. This is because every individual takes to the problem of jetlag differently. While some are not affected as much, others require an extended amount of time to recover. As a cabin crew, millennials and Gen Z would encounter this concern and would have to train themselves in addition to the solutions provided by the airline. Patience and passion are the other two important factors that may get challenged from time to time. Flight delays and bad weather are some of the testing times. To be calm and composed in a crisis is a trait of being a cabin crew member. A passionate mindset that “I am not an individual when wearing my uniform but a brand ambassador” surely helps an individual to overcome these challenges and deliver excellent customer service, empathize with guest needs and find ways to go above and beyond to help our guests. Industry Trends 2022 With the recovery of the airline industry in full swing and governments across nations lifting travel restrictions, millennials are flocking towards being a part of the cabin crew journey. While the biggest lesson from the pandemic is that predictions can go wrong, experts have predicted that travel will see an upswing from this year onwards at a gradual pace. By integrating digitalization to minimize the need for physical interactions, airlines are now pushing for a touchless experience. Face to face interactions between airline members and passengers would eventually decrease, thereby improving safety and sanitization. Operations such as automated check-ins, biometric facial recognition, e-boarding information are some of the upcoming trends that people would experience in the coming years. New Delhi, 11th July 2022: Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh launched 75 newly-developed Artificial Intelligence (AI) products/technologies during the first-ever ‘AI in Defence’ (AIDef) symposium and exhibition, organised by Ministry of Defence in New Delhi on July 11, 2022. The products, launched as part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations, fall under various domains. These include AI Platform Automation; Autonomous/Unmanned/Robotics systems; Block Chain-based Automation; Command, Control, Communication, Computer & Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance; Cyber Security; Human Behavioural Analysis; Intelligent Monitoring Systems; Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems; Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Operational Data Analytics; Manufacturing and Maintenance; Simulators/Test Equipment and speech/voice analysis using Natural Language Processing. Three AI products developed by the DPSUs having dual use applications and good market potential, namely AI-enabled Voice Transcription/Analysis software developed by Bharat Electronics Limited; Driver Fatigue Monitoring System developed by Bharat Earth Movers Limited and AI-enabled evaluation of Welding defects in X-rays of Non-destructive Testing developed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers were screened during the event. These products are expected to open up new business avenues for the Defence PSUs. The Raksha Mantri released the physical as well as e-version of the book comprising the details of these 75 products, showcasing the collective efforts put on by the Services, Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), iDEX start-ups and the private industry in last four years in the field of AI. Appreciating the efforts, Shri Rajnath Singh, in his address, described AI as a revolutionary step in the development of humanity; a proof that a human being is the most evolved creature in the universe. He was amazed that a human mind has not only created/reproduced knowledge, but is developing intelligence that creates knowledge. RM pointed out that AI has built inroads in almost every sector, including defence, health & medicine, agriculture, trade & commerce and transport. He called upon all the defence stakeholders to enhance the jointness of human consciousness and the ability of AI to bring a radical change in the sector. “When there has been full human participation in wars, new autonomous weapons/systems have been developed with the help of AI applications. They can destroy enemy establishments without human control. AI-enabled military devices are capable of handling large amounts of data efficiently. It is also proving to be very helpful in training the soldiers. In the coming times, Augmented and Virtual Reality technologies will also be used effectively,” he said. The RM appreciated the fact that MoD, Armed Forces, DRDO, DPSUs and the Industry are making meaningful efforts to provide innovative & indigenous AI solutions for defence and are developing futuristic technologies. He echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of developing AI-enabled and AI-led applications to ensure social welfare & national security and making India a ‘Global Hub for AI’. He hoped that India will soon be among the leading countries in the field of AI. Shri Rajnath Singh asserted that weapons/systems are being developed, keeping in mind the crucial role AIcan play in future warfare. “We have started incorporation of AI applications in remote piloted, unmanned aerial vehicles etc. There is a need to move further in this direction so that we can develop autonomous weapon systems. Timely infusion of technologies like AI & Big Data in the defence sector is of utmost importance, so that we are not left behind the technological curve and are able to take maximum advantage of technology for our services,” he said. Raksha Mantri added that several MoUs have been signed with the industry for faster promotion of AI applications in the Services. Many AI-related challenges under the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiatives have also been given. The challenges are under various domains, including Radio Frequency Spectrum Management, Underwater Domain Awareness, Satellite Image Analysis and Friend or Foe Identification System. He urged the industry and start-ups to explore newer avenues and work hand-in-hand with the Government to ensure complete self-reliance in the field of AI technology. “Russia is a technologically advanced country and is continuously progressing in the field of Science & Technology. On AI, Russian President Vladimir Putin had said ‘Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world’. Although India believes in the principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the whole world is one family) and has no intention to rule the world, we must develop the capability of our AI technology so that no country can even think of ruling us,” said Rajnath Singh. Impressing upon the important role academia can play in strengthening the defence sector, the Raksha Mantri stated that MoD research platforms, DRDO and DPSUs are providing support to various institutes in pursuing cutting edge AI research. He added that efforts are being made by DRDO to make strides in the field of AI through Technological Development Fund projects and ‘Dare to dream’ contests. Several Defence-Industry-Academia Centres of Excellence have been established across the country and AI finds prominence in the charters of many of them, he said. “Our country is full of scientific & technologically trained youth who have innovative minds and the desire to contribute to Nation Building. In such a situation, we will move towards fulfilling the technological needs of our nation as well as the world in the times to come. Although the mandate of the organisations of MoD is to develop futuristic technologies for the Armed Forces, its spin-off benefits will also be available to the civilians,” said Rajnath Singh. The RM emphasised on the need to think about humanity and world peace along with one’s own defence & security. “There is a need to think about the ethics of AI and its potential dangers at an early stage. Whenever a new technology is introduced, it takes time for the society to adapt to it. In this transition period, a challenging situation sometimes arises. Since AI is a technology that brings about a massive change, we have to be prepared in advance for any legal, ethical, political and economic challenges. We should look at
