Commercial Asian Aviation Leaders to Gather at Aviation Festival Asia in Singapore

9th June 2022, Singapore: Aviation Festival Asia, the leading annual gathering of Asia’s commercial aviation leaders, will take place in Singapore at Suntec Convention Centre on 14-15 June 2022. After an absence of more than three years, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event marks the first time that the region’s commercial aviation leaders have been able to gather together since 2019. MoCA launches National Air Sports Policy

New Delhi, 07th June 2022: The Minister of Civil Aviation, India, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia launched the National Air Sport Policy 2022 (NASP 2022). NASP 2022 lays out the vision of making India as one of the top sports nations by 2030 by providing a safe, affordable, accessible, enjoyable and sustainable air sports ecosystem in India.The event was graced by Rajiv Bansal, Secretary, MoCA, Sanjeev Kumar, Chairman, AAI,Amber Dubey, JS, MoCA, Rubina Ali, JS, MoCA, SK Mishra, JS, MoCA, Piyush Srivastava, Senior Economic Advisor, MoCA, PK Thakur, Deputy Director General, MoCA and other dignitaries from AAI, MoCA, DGCA and BCAS. Air sports, as the names suggests, encompasses various sports activities involving the medium of air. These include sports like air-racing, aerobatics, aeromodelling, hang gliding, paragliding, paramotoring and skydiving etc. India has the potential to be among the leading nations in the world of air sports. It has a large geographical expanse, diverse topography, and fair-weather conditions. It has a large population, especially the youth. It has a growing culture for adventure sports and aviation. The National Air Sports Policy (NASP) 2022, is a step in this direction. It has been drafted based on the inputs received from policy makers, air sports practitioners and public at large and will ensure establishment of good quality of infrastructure, equipment, instructors and services. The policy will cover the following air sports in India:- 1. Aerobatics 2. Aeromodelling and model rocketry 3. Amateur-built and experimental aircraft 4. Ballooning 5. Drones 6. Gliding and powered gliding 7. Hang gliding and powered hang gliding 8. Parachuting (including skydiving, BASE jumping and wingsuits etc.) 9. Paragliding and paramotoring (including powered parachute trikes etc.) 10. Powered aircraft (including ultralight, microlight and light sports aircraft etc.) 11. Rotorcraft (including autogyro) Under the new policy, there will be four-tier governance structure for air sports in India namely • Air Sports Federation of India (ASFI) as the apex governing body • National associations for individual air sports or a set of air sports, as appropriate • Regional (e.g. West/ South/ North East etc.) or State and Union Territory level units of the national air sports associations, as appropriate; and • District-level air sports associations, as appropriate. • The Civil Aviation Minister said, “It is time for India to take its rightful place and become global capital of air sports. We want to create an environment of adventure, thrill and sports in the country. For this, we will leverage the energy of our youth below the age of 35 which accounts to 70 percent of India’s population which is larger than the total population of Europe and three times that of USA. India has a huge geographical expanse extends from the Himalayas and the mountainous regions to our states in the northeast to the plains in central India to the coastal regions on the western-eastern coastline, and therefore you have the ability in this country to have the widest diversity of air sports.” The policy, according to Hon’ble Minister, will serve to attract air sports enthusiasts from all over the world, especially those who live in areas where harsh winters prevent them from participating. He believes that air sports enthusiasts from Europe, North America, and Australia would flock to India to practice in the winters. Speaking on the future of Air Sports in India, “From a small market size of around 5,000 odd air sports practitioners creating around Rs 80-100 crore of annual revenue in India, I feel we can target over Rs 8,000 – 10,000 crore annual revenue and generate over 1,00,000 direct jobs. The economic multiplier benefits in terms of travel, tourism, support services and local infrastructure development will be over three times.” The event also had presence of two Indian Air Sports Players –Shital Mahajan and Rachel Thomas. Both are sky drivers and Padma Shri awardee. Shital Mahajan is known as the first woman to perform an accelerated free fall jump over the Antarctica from 10,000 feet, the youngest woman to jump over both the North and South Poles and the first woman jumper to perform it without trials while Rachel Thomas was the first Indian woman to skydive from 7,000 ft over the North Pole. Both Air sports enthusiasts expressed their gratitude for introducing National Air Sports Policy which will help India become air sports hub by 2030. Key Objectives of NASP 2022:- 1. Promote an air sports culture in the country 2. Enable adoption of international good practices in safety including but not limited to, air sports infrastructure, equipment, operations, maintenance and training 3. Develop a simple, stakeholder-friendly and effective governance structure 4. Enhance participation and success of Indian sports persons in global air sports events; and 5. SIDBI joins hands with UPEIDA to support MSMEs in Aerospace & Defence

New Delhi, June 07, 2022: Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), the country’s principal financial institution engaged in the promotion, financing, and development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) to enlarge the financial outreach and to support MSMEs in Aerospace & Defence (A&D) sector through direct financing. The MoU executed by Shri V. Satya Venkata Rao, Deputy Managing Director, SIDBI and Shri Awanish Kumar Awasthi, IAS, Chief Executive Officer, UPEIDA, was, formally exchanged by Shri Prakash Kumar, Chief General Manager, SIDBI. Under the MoU, SIDBI would consider funding financial requirements of MSMEs setting up/ having units in Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) and other industrial areas developed by UPEIDA. The MoU would help MSMEs to set up industrial units in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The key highlights of the arrangement are, a) when any allotment letter(s) for industrial land are issued by UPEIDA, it shall provide details of allottees to SIDBI, b) SIDBI will contact the allottees for their financial needs. On receipt of the duly filled in application, SIDBI will process the same as per guidelines, c) the present arrangement is aimed at development of a strong foundation for MSMEs in the state of Uttar Pradesh, which would attract investment from allottees and accelerate implementation of their projects, and d) UPEIDA and SIDBI shall extend mutual co-operation for various other initiatives being undertaken for the benefit of MSMEs in UPDIC and other industrial areas developed by UPEIDA, which shall include, holding/ participating in outreach events, seminars and webinars for creating awareness among MSMEs about various financial products and initiatives being undertaken by SIDBI, including a dedicated web-portal (defence.sidbi.in), knowledge series for MSMEs in A&D sector, etc. As regards the arrangement with UPEIDA, Shri V. Satya Venkata Rao, Deputy Managing Director, SIDBI said, “SIDBI’s emphasis is on strengthening the MSME eco-system and realizing GoI’s ideology of “Make In India” and making India “Self-reliant”. This arrangement will support MSMEs setting up industrial units in the State of Uttar Pradesh by meeting their credit needs as well as addressing credit-plus requirements, viz, knowledge inputs through dedicated web-portal, literature, events/webinars etc.”

BLR Airport introduces Robots for an enhanced Passenger Experience

Bengaluru, June 07, 2022: In one of its own innovative concept, Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru has introduced the first-of-its-kind AI-driven, assistance robots to enhance passenger experience at BLR Airport. Currently, at the trial stage, 10 robots have been deployed to help guide passengers through the airport and answer basic queries. The robot count will be increased in a calibrated manner and will be further developed over a period in terms of functionality and features, after gauging customer feedback. BLR Airport has partnered with Artiligent Solutions Pvt. Ltd. – specialists in AI and Robotics, to model the robots along with creating a customised passenger services software. The default language of communication will be English, with additional regional and international languagesin the offing. Jayaraj Shanmugam, Chief Operating Officer, BIAL, said that the airportprides itself on being a trendsetter when it comes to blending innovation andproviding a seamless experience to passengers. “Pre-empting passenger requirements and complementing new-age technology with a focused customer-centric team approach has been our winning combination. These smart robots are the latest addition to our offering which shall further boost our concentrated endeavor to provide exceptional customer service.” Rupesh Sawant, Chief Executive Officer, Artiligent said: “Innovative technology is revolutionisingairtravel across the world. Artiligent ideated the AI_PORT concept to develop an enhanced airport experience for travellers. We are proud to associate with BLR Airport, the first airport in India to launch our solution and take a leap in their digital transformation journey.” The robots will provide a variety of services which include providing information on the flight status, passenger convenience services, directional assistance, Retail and F&B information. They shall navigate autonomously through the terminal and escort passengers to their desired locations. If due to any reason, the robot is unable to answer queries, passengers shall be immediately connected tothe ‘Airport Help Desk’ via video call, on the robot screen itself.

Defence Acquisition Council clears proposals of Rs 76,390 crore in major boost to ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’

New Delhi; 7th June 2022: In a major boost to ‘Aatmanirbharta’, Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), in a meeting chaired by Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh on June 06, 2022, accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for Capital Acquisition Proposals of the Armed Forces amounting to Rs 76,390 crore under ‘Buy (Indian)’, ‘Buy & Make (Indian)’ and ‘Buy (Indian-IDDM)’ categories. This will provide substantial boost to the Indian Defence Industry and reduce foreign spending significantly. For the Indian Army, the DAC accorded fresh AoNs for procurement of Rough Terrain Fork Lift Trucks (RTFLTs), Bridge Laying Tanks (BLTs), Wheeled Armoured Fighting Vehicles (Wh AFVs) with Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) and Weapon Locating Radars (WLRs) through domestic sources with emphasis on indigenous design and development. For the Indian Navy, the DAC accorded AoN for procurement of Next Generation Corvettes (NGC) at an estimated cost of approx. Rs 36,000 crore. These NGCs will be versatile platforms for variety of roles viz. surveillance missions, escort operations, deterrence, Surface Action Group (SAG) operations, Search & Attack and Coastal Defence. These NGCs would be constructed based on new in-house design of Indian Navy using latest technology of ship building and would contribute to further the Government’s initiative of SAGAR (Security and Growth for all in the Region). The DAC accorded AoNs for manufacture of Dornier Aircrafts and Su-30 MKI aero-engines by the Navratna CPSE M/s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited with focus on enhancing indigenisation particularly in indigenising aero-engine material. In pursuance of the Government’s vision for digital transformation in Defence, ‘Digital Coast Guard’ project under ‘Buy (Indian) Category has been approved by the DAC. Under this project, a pan India secure network for digitising of various surface and aviation operations, logistics, finance and HR processes in Coast Guard will be established.

Turkiye drops all Covid-19 restrictions for Indian travellers

New Delhi: June 07; Effective 1st June ‘22, Turkiye has relaxed all the conditions for Indian travellers entering the country. Earlier, they were required to submit either a vaccination certificate of both the doses or an RT PCR test report to visit the country. Now, arriving Indian travellers no longer have to show proof of vaccination against the coronavirus or proof of recovery from the disease or a negative PCR test result. With both Indigo as well as Turkish Airlines resuming direct international flights to Turkiye, the country is expecting to welcome the highest ever number of Indian tourists this year. With its tourism revenues doubling-up last year to almost USD 25 billion, recording 103% growth since the emergence of the pandemic, Turkiye is set to create a whole new record in 2022. It emerged as one of the top destinations for FIT and MICE tourists from around the world last year, having welcomed over 30 million international visitors in 2021. Of these, 50 thousand were Indian tourists, which was a sizable number taking the pandemic into consideration. Thus, the country is expecting full recovery in tourism for the year 2022 and is aiming to reach the pre Covid numbers in terms of international visitors including Indians. Recently, Turkiye has also been a hot vacation destination for A-list Bollywood celebrities, with film actor Sara Ali Khan and Malaika Arora Khan being the latest to visit the country. Turkiye ranks as the 6th highest country in the world to host international visitors annually.The country welcomed 52 million travellers in the pre-pandemic period of 2019, touching a whopping USD 34.5 billion in tourism revenue. By the end of year 2022, Turkiye is expecting its tourist numbers to return to 2019 level as international travel demand is rebounding and people are willing to travel and experience new destinations.

MOU FOR IAF HERITAGE CENTRE AT CHANDIGARH

3rd June 2022; Chandigarh: Banwarilal Purohit, Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT of Chandigarh and Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, Chief of the Air Staff witnessed the ceremony for signing of MoU between UT of Chandigarh and IAF for setting up the IAF Heritage Centre at Chandigarh, today. This Heritage Centre will have artefacts, simulator and interactive boards to highlight various facets of IAF. It will also showcase the vital role played by the Service in various wars and assistance rendered for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. This joint project of Administration of UT Chandigarh and IAF is planned to be completed by October 2022. It will attract and encourage the local youth to join the armed forces. Smt Kirron Kher (Member of Parliament, Chandigarh) also witnessed the MoU signing ceremony.

Malaysia Airlines flies its first passenger flight with Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel

6th June 2022; Malaysia: In conjunction with World Environment Day, Malaysia Airlines, the national carrier of Malaysia, operated its first passenger flight using Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ (SAF) on flight MH603 from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, which was refueled at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The historic flight was operated with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft fueled by a blend of conventional jet fuel and Neste’s SAF, which is produced from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, such as animal fat waste that was used for the SAF on this flight. Produced by Neste, the world’s largest SAF producer, the fuel was supplied in collaboration with PETCO Trading (UK) Ltd, which is PETRONAS’ marketing and trading arm based in Europe, while product handling and refueling was carried out by PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) at KLIA. Following yesterday’s milestone, the long-term supply of SAF will be secured at KLIA for future flights operated by sister airlines under Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), including Firefly, as well as other potential airline customers wishing to reduce their carbon emissions with SAF. Philip See, Group Chief Sustainability Officer of MAG, said: “MAG aims to be a pioneer in using SAF for flights in Malaysia as part of our commitment to achieving socio-economic development and reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. We have taken proactive measures in minimising our carbon footprint from the ground up through measures taken within our operations, including fuel efficiency programmes and SAF.” “With the commencement of our first passenger flight using SAF, we encourage passengers to join us on this journey as we take the necessary steps to minimise our environmental impacts and plan for more flights powered by SAF for the betterment of the industry, nation, and future of our planet. Moving forward, we will look to make SAF the cleaner and more viable energy option for our regular flights by 2025.” Azrul Osman Rani, PDB’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer said: “In line with PETRONAS’ commitment towards achieving Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050, exploring the supply of SAF at KLIA is a natural progression for us with aviation fuel being one of our key products. With two proven flights, PDB has demonstrated its capabilities and infrastructure readiness in supplying SAF in KLIA from now onwards to support the aviation industry’s sustainability agenda. Coupled with commitment from the national taskforce, we are confident that we will be able to jointly accelerate the transformation of the Malaysian aviation industry into a sustainable one.” Neste is committed to supporting aviation reach its ambitious emission reduction goals and is currently expanding its global SAF production capacity to 1.5 million tons per annum by the end of 2023. In neat form, Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%* over the life cycle, compared to fossil jet fuel. Neste-produced SAF is made from 100% renewable and sustainably sourced waste and residue raw materials. “This collaboration with PETRONAS enables our first supply of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel to Malaysia,” says Sami Jauhiainen, Vice President APAC, Renewable Aviation at Neste. “I am excited to see how countries and airlines in the Asia-Pacific region are setting ambitious targets to decarbonize aviation, and increasingly many airlines are taking SAF into use to reduce their emissions and enable their travelers to fly more sustainably. Neste is committed to playing its part as the expansion of our Singapore refinery will enable production of 1 million tons of SAF by the end of the first quarter in 2023, ready to support the Asia-Pacific and global aviation markets.”

IAG Cargo launches direct routes from Madrid to Dallas and Washington DC

6th June 2022; India : IAG Cargo, the cargo division of International Airlines Group (IAG), touched down in Dallas and Washington DC on 1st June 2022 from Madrid Barajas airport, marking the inaugural routes with the welcoming of a water cannon salute to commemorate the significance of both new routes. The new routes will be utilising the belly capacity of an Iberia Airbus A332 aircraft, four times a week from Madrid Barajas airport, with the capacity to hold c. 20 tonnes of cargo. These two new routes add to over 120 weekly connections between Spain and the USA, with flights already departing twice a day to New York and Miami from Madrid. The additional routes act as a gateway to other American destinations by truck. Pravin Singh, Vice President Commercial, Americas at IAG Cargo commented: “It is always exciting to see IAG Cargo launch a new route, so two new routes between Madrid and the USA is even better and provides our customers with further opportunities to move their cargo between the regions. The launch of the new routes between Madrid and Dallas and Madrid and Washington DC highlights IAG Cargo’s commitment to offering our customers accessibility into new markets and expanding our wide-body network across the globe.” IAG Cargo continues to strengthen its presence in the West now offering 8 destinations into the USA from Madrid including New York, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington DC, Dallas and San Francisco. Popular commodities transported between the regions include electronic parts and textiles, as well as industrial goods and machinery.

IAF to Transfer land to AAI for RCS UDAN

3rd June 2022; New Delhi: To enhance support for Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), Indian Air Force has facilitated Working Permission and handing over of Defence Land by Ministry of Defence to Airport Authority of India (AAI) at seven locations, viz, Bagdogra, Darbhanga, Adampur, Utarlai, Sarsawa, Kanpur and Gorakhpur. AAI would now be utilising the existing IAF airfields to operate civil flights under the RCS UDAN scheme. Approximately 40 acres of land is being handed over for development of civil terminals and necessary airfield infrastructure for commencing RCS flights. Providing air connectivity at these locations will boost the economy and develop the areas. Moreover, IAF is also in the process of handing over Defence land for expansion of civil airports at six locations, over and above those covered under RCS, viz., Srinagar, Thanjavur, Chandigarh, Leh, Pune and Agra. This will facilitate expansion of the existing terminals and facilities to accommodate enhanced number of passengers and cargo infrastructure.

The current edition of Aviation World has covered many areas of Aerospace & Defence based on the latest development in the sector. The front cover highlights three different images, first for the Union Civil Aviation Minister ….. who is leading from the front to steer Indian Civil Aviation sector to witness one of the most interesting phases. He is also facing most tumultuous timing due to the ongoing financial stress in the Aviation sector due to ATF rising cost and long airspace restrictions resulting in mounting losses for Indian carriers. Despite of all the ground level challenges,the minister is addressing new things on regular basis which keeps the sector motivated. We have featured many such developmental works in this edition done under his guidance which will be interesting to read.

Our lead story on “ The West War” is another important feature which covers the ground level reality of the challenges faced by the Aviation sector. Its though time ahead and we believe it will pass soon .

There are features on Regional connectivity and MoCA revised rules on the UDAN 2.0 and how its going to transform the flying experience within India.
