Irish aviation sets its sights on the Dubai Airshow

Dubai, UAE –5 August 2021: Irish industry stakeholders from the world of aviation and aerospace have quickly signed up to participate at this year’s Dubai Airshow – the only fully physical international show confirmed for the sector this year. With only 100 days to go, the Airshow comes at an important time for the global aviation and aerospace industry as the world begins to recover from the impact of the global pandemic. The year 2020 has indeed been the most difficult in the history of aviation with international passenger demand decreasing by 75.6 percent compared to 2019 and down by 67.6 percent across the Middle East. The global outbreak of COVID-19 and the resulting travel restrictions, decimated travel demand and led to significant financial losses. IATA reports that global passenger revenues (revenue passenger-kilometres (RPKs)) fell by 69 percent to $189 billion compared to 2019. The Dubai Airshow is ready and primed to be a strong catalyst for the sector to convene and fuel business opportunities at a time when airlines are preparing for a strong rebound as well as acting as a meeting point for the brightest minds in the industry. Irish partners are coming together to support one another on the global stage and play their part in the global recovery. Enterprise Ireland, the Irish government’s innovation and trade agency, will facilitate and host 12 Irish companies at the 2021 Dubai Airshow, including household names like Dublin Aerospace, Botany Weaving and Atlantic Aviation Group. Developed with a collaborative approach at its core, the strategy for this year is focused on showcasing the full strength of Irish aviation to airlines, equipment manufacturers and government bodies across the region. Enterprise Ireland will present the ‘Irish Aviation House’, a new concept and standalone chalet in a prime location along the runway marking a bigger investment and presence than ever before. This new approach will support Irish companies within the aviation and aerospace industry to create an impact on a global scale. The chalet’s prime position on the runway not only offers the best views of the Airshow, but also allows key partners to exhibit their winning innovative products and services in a more compelling setting that welcomes maximum footfall in a safe environment. “We have designed the Irish Aviation House and programme throughout Dubai Airshow 2021 to showcase the full depth and expertise across the Irish aviation and aerospace industries. The 12 companies from Ireland have been selected with the aim of highlighting the full spectrum of Irish capabilities to a wider audience, and to demonstrate how we can all work together on the global stage,” said Alan O’ Mahony, Market Adviser for Aviation and Aerospace at Enterprise Ireland MENA. Irish businesses at Dubai Airshow 2021 Offering key decision makers, customers, and other peers a safe environment, adhering to COVID-19 rules, the Irish Aviation House will play host to hugely successful businesses like Dublin Aerospace, Atlantic Aviation Group, Eirtech Aviation Services, Aero Inspection, Botany Weaving, Aero Aid, Emerald Aero Group, Innalabs, Airtel ATN, VRAI, and Shannon IASC to network and explore the latest developments in the sector. Dublin Aerospace, a locally grown and globally focused operator for maintenance, repair, and overhaul services, is one of Enterprise Ireland’s client companies with a significant presence across the Middle East and North African markets. Recently, they successfully secured a major heavy aviation maintenance contract with the national carrier for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – SAUDIA. Established in 1934, the family run business of Botany Weaving is an Airbus and Boeing-approved manufacturer of aircraft carpet and fabric, with the knowledge and expertise to manage any line fit or aftermarket projects. Its customers in the region include Etihad, Emirates, Gulf Air, Air Arabia, Fly Dubai, and Royal Jordanian where they provide unique designed and tailored materials for use as seat covers, curtains and other fabrics. Even throughout the most challenging year, the Irish aviation sector has been preparing for growth and are well placed to support the industry bounce back through collaborations with key strategic partners, enabling improved connectivity for millions of passengers. Other external partners involved with the ‘Irish Aviation House’ at the internationally recognised event include the Irish Aviation Authority, Future Mobility Campus Ireland, and Tourism Ireland.

NAS Partners with Abbott to Facilitate Cross-Border Travel

Kuwait: 11th August 2021: National Aviation Services (NAS), a prominent airport services provider signed an agreement with global healthcare company, Abbott, to drive the implementation of Covid-19 rapid testing solutions at major airports and trans border lounges across the African continent and the Middle East. This partnership aims to aid the recovery of safe inter-country travel and passenger confidence. Using its global network, local relationships and industry expertise, NAS will work with local authorities to deploy Abbott’s Panbio COVID-19 Ag Rapid Test Device and the ID NOW molecular point-of-care test system. Both these solutions offer quick testing for Covid-19, thus encouraging and facilitating safer cross-border travel. With the global aviation industry working hard to take off following the pandemic, solutions such as these will go a long way in helping fuel economies as more people resume international commerce and travel. NAS has a presence in more than 50 airports, collectively managing over 100 airlines and 50 airport lounges in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. Since the beginning of the pandemic, NAS has been driving efforts to implement digital solutions to help restart travel globally – especially collecting and verifying health data and ensuring authenticity of PCR test certificates of travelers. Hassan El-Houry, Group CEO said: “During the pandemic, NAS has continued to partner with local authorities to utilize our airport expertise in passenger handling and technology to develop digital solutions that offer peace of mind for travelers, airline employees, airport authorities and the local government. Our collaboration in purchasing and deploying the Abbott’s Panbio™ COVID-19 Ag Rapid Test Device and the ID NOW molecular point-of-care system at airports across our network is aimed at continuing these efforts and helping restore passenger confidence to aid further recovery of international travel.” Abbott’s Panbio COVID-19 Ag Rapid Test Device is a highly reliable, portable and affordable rapid antigen test, which has received CE Mark and WHO EUL and has been deployed in dozens of countries across the world. It delivers results in as early as 15-20 minutes with no instrumentation, providing a scalable and cost-effective solution for governments and private industry in efforts to restart international commerce. ID NOW COVID-19 assay is performed on the ID NOW Instrument, which is a rapid molecular test that uses isothermal nucleic acid amplification to detect SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in direct nasal, nasopharyngeal or throat swabs. It provides results in 13 minutes or less. The ID NOW Instrument has a small footprint and easy to use graphical user interface for convenience within busy environments. Both solutions can help save passengers and airport authorities or airlines considerable time and effort to get test results prior to departure or on arrival. They will also help curb the transmission of the coronavirus among passengers travelling together or through passengers arriving into the destination country. Passengers can thus travel with more peace of mind when on aircrafts or at crowded airports.

Sea Trials Of Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC (P71)) ‘Vikrant’

Kochi, 04 Aug, 2021: Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) ‘Vikrant’ designed by Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design(DND) is being built at Cochin Shipyard Limited(CSL), a Public Sector Shipyard under Ministry of Shipping(MoS).IAC is a leading example of the nation’s quest for “Atma Nirbhar Bharat” with more than 76% indigenous content. This is the maiden attempt of the Indian Navy and Cochin Shipyard to indigenously design and build an Aircraft Carrier. The Indigenous Aircraft Carrier is 262 m long, 62 m at the widest part and height of 59 m including the superstructure. There are 14 decks in all, including five in the superstructure. The ship has over 2,300 compartments, designed for a crew of around 1700 people, including specialised cabins to accommodate women officers. The ship has been designed with a very high degree of automation for machinery operation, ship navigation and survivability, ‘Vikrant’ has a top speed of around 28 knots and cruising speed of 18 knots with an endurance of about 7,500 nautical miles. The ship can accommodate an assortment of fixed wing and rotary aircraft. Most of the ship construction activities have been completed and the ship has entered the trials phase. Readiness of ship’s Propulsion and Power Generation equipment/ systems was tested in harbour as part of Basin Trials in Nov 20. Progress of construction of the Carrier was reviewed by Hon’ble Raksha Mantri during his visit to the ship on 25 Jun 21. Though the commencement of Sea Trials was delayed due to the 2nd wave of COVID, with concentrated and dedicated efforts of large number of workmen, OEMs, engineers, overseers, inspectors, designers and the ship’s crew, who had put their heart and soul towards the ship’s readiness for sea trials. This is a major milestone activity and historical event. Reaching this milestone is significant as they have been achieved barring the current pandemic challenges and imponderables. During the maiden sailing, ship’s performance, including hull, main propulsion, PGD and auxiliary equipment would be closely watched. With the delivery of IAC, India would join a select group of nations with the capability to indigenously design and build an Aircraft Carrier, which will be a real testimony to the ‘Make in India’ thrust of the Indian Government. The Indigenous construction of Aircraft Carrier is a shining example in the Nation’s quest for ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India Initiative’. This has led to growth in indignous design and construction capabilities besides development of large number of ancillary industries, with employment opportunities for 2000 CSL personnel and about 12000 employees in ancillary industries. Over 76% indigenous content towards procurement of equipment, besides work by CSL and their subcontractors is being directly invested back into the Indian economy. Around 550 Indian firms including about 100 MSMEs are registered with CSL, who are providing various services for construction of IAC. Indian Navy’s ship building programme is rightly poised to provide requisite ‘Economic Stimulus’, with 44 ships & submarines on order being built indigenously. News Source: PIB(Defence Wing)
