Air India appoints SIA Engineering to develop its maintenance facilities

Gurugram, 11th May 2024: Air India has appointed SIA Engineering Company Limited (SIAEC) as its strategic partner for the development of Air India’s Base Maintenance facilities at Bengaluru. As part of the partnership, Air India will work closely with SIAEC on the planning, construction, development and operationalization of Air India’s Base Maintenance facilities in Bengaluru, India. Projected to be ready in 2026, the facilities will comprise both widebody and narrowbody hangars, including associated repair shops, to support the growing Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) needs of the aircraft fleet in Air India Group. Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India, said: “The collaboration with SIA Engineering Company will not only help Air India become more self-reliant for the maintenance of its own fleet but it also reiterates our commitment to strengthen India’s aviation infrastructure by boosting the growth of the country’s MRO industry.” Chin Yau Seng, Chief Executive Officer, SIAEC, said: “We are delighted to be able to play a small part in Air India’s amazing transformation journey and look forward to working closely with the Air India team to ensure the success of this project. This appointment marks another significant milestone in the development of the partnership between Air India and SIAEC. Going forward, we hope to have even more opportunities to collaborate with Air India in the MRO space in India.” Air India had earlier announced setting up a state-of-the-art Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities at Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (operated by Bangalore International Airport Ltd) starting with Airframe Maintenance through the development of widebody and narrowbody aircraft hangars for all checks.

Air India adds Zurich to its European network

Gurugram,3rd May 2024: Air India will start a non-stop service between Delhi and Zurich starting 16 June 2024, marking the airline’s entry in Switzerland and taking the total number of cities served by Air India in mainland Europe to seven. Using its two-class configured Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, Air India will operate on the new European route on four days every week – Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Air India’s new service will provide travellers in Switzerland, as well as those in southern Germany and western Austria with a non-stop option to travel to Delhi, and onward to destinations across Air India’s growing route network, particularly in the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Australia. Air India flight AI151 will depart Delhi at 1405hrs, arriving in Zurich at 1915hrs. AI152 will depart Zurich at 2050hrs, arriving in Delhi at 0805hrs the next day. Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Air India, said,”This new route strengthens the ties between India and Switzerland, which are not only major trading partners, but also boast a vibrant exchange of people. With over 250 Swiss companies operating in India, hundreds of Indian companies in Switzerland, and a growing Indian diaspora of nearly 18,000, these flights will cater to a strong demand for business and leisure travel in both directions.” “Switzerland, a consistently top-ranking European destination for Indian tourists, will now be even more accessible, with these flights further solidifying the economic and cultural bridges between the two nations,” Wilson added. Air India currently operates a total of 60 weekly flights to and from six cities in mainland Europe, namely Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Milan, Paris, and Vienna.

Korean Air and WestJet expand codeshare agreement

Seoul, 23 April , 2024 : Korean Air and WestJet expanded their codeshare partnership on April 22 to provide more transpacific destinations to its customers. Korean Air will begin selling flights on WestJet’s new route between Seoul Incheon and Calgary, which will launch from May 17. Flights on the newly launched Seoul Incheon – Calgary route will operate three times a week using Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Korean Air passengers will gain access to Calgary, Canada’s gateway to Banff National Park in the Rocky Mountains, renowned for Lake Louise and its mountain trails. “We are excited to announce an expanded codeshare with our longstanding partner WestJet, offering our valued customers access to a wide range of transpacific destinations,” said Tae Joon Kim, Korean Air Senior Vice President and Head of International Affairs & Alliance. “The launch of WestJet’s Calgary – Seoul Incheon route will bolster connectivity between Korea and Canada, while our strengthened partnership will seamlessly connect customers to an expanded array of Asian and Canadian cities through our hubs in Incheon and Calgary, respectively.” WestJet customers will gain access to flights operated by Korean Air to six new destinations – Bangkok, Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong and Singapore – via Korean Air’s hub at Incheon Airport. “As we prepare for WestJet’s inaugural flights between Calgary and Incheon, the timing of this codeshare expansion is ideal. We are enhancing connectivity to more destinations in Asia for our guests and WestJet Rewards members from one of the world’s busiest cities, and Korean Air’s global hub,” said Jeff Hagen, WestJet Vice-President of Commercial Development and Strategic Partnerships. “Our longstanding reciprocal partnership with Korean Air opens up exciting opportunities for leisure and business travellers to more locations in the Asian continent and offers new guests in Asia access to all of Canada through our global hub in Calgary.” Since Korean Air and WestJet first began its codeshare partnership in June 2012, it has continued to expand, covering Korean Air’s flights from Seoul Incheon to Vancouver and Toronto; WestJet’s domestic routes within Canada; and flights to/from the United States via Vancouver and Toronto. With the new codeshare expansion, the airlines’ codeshare network will increase to 36 routes.

Air India & All Nippon Airways signs codeshare agreement connecting their networks

Delhi, 23 April 2024: Air India and All Nippon Airways, the Japanese carrier have signed a codeshare agreement connecting their networks. The new commercial partnership will provide more travel opportunities for customers of both airlines, who will benefit from the enhanced flight selections between India and Japan. With this agreement, effective for travel from 23 May 2024, Air India and All Nippon Airways guests will fly to their desired destination by combining those flights between India and Japan with a single ticket. In addition, guests of both airlines flying on codeshare flights will enjoy premium services such as lounge access and priority boarding that Star Alliance offers to its premium members. Available for sale from 23 April 2024, Air India will add its ‘AI’ designator code on ANA’s flights between Tokyo Haneda and Delhi as well as Tokyo Narita and Mumbai, while All Nippon Airways will add its ‘NH’ designator code on Air India’s flight between Tokyo Narita and Delhi. Air India and ANA are considering further expanding their cooperation on additional routes. “This codeshare agreement with All Nippon Airways marks an important step forward in connecting India and Japan,” said Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial & Transformation Officer, Air India. “This collaboration broadens our network connectivity and offers our guests seamless travel experiences and a wider choice of flights between the two countries. Akasa Air adds Prayagraj as its 22nd destination

Delhi, 12th April 2024: Akasa Air announced the addition of Prayagraj as the 22nd destination to its rapidly expanding network. Starting 25th May 2024, the airline will operate daily flights between Mumbai and Prayagraj to enhance connectivity and convenience between the two cities. The addition of Prayagraj is a significant milestone as it is the fourth city from Uttar Pradesh to be a part of Akasa Air’s network, strengthening its presence in North India. Air India to Fly to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam from 1st June 2024 onwards

Gurugram, 10th April 2024: Air India has announced starting of non-stop service between Delhi and Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) in Vietnam from 1st June 2024 onwards.Using its two-class configured Airbus A320neo aircraft, Air India will operate on the new route at convenient times five days a week – Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The new route will further strengthen Air India’s network of destinations in Southeast Asia, offer a new flight option to an increasing number of travellers between India and Vietnam, and open new connections for Vietnamese travellers to access Air India’s global route network. The new service will also enable convenient one-stop connections to Vietnam via Delhi for travellers from the U.S., Canada, UK, and Europe. Currently, Air India flies non-stop between India and four points in Southeast Asia,namely Singapore, Bangkok and Phuket (Thailand), and Yangon (Myanmar).

Air India Appoints Jayaraj Shanmugam as Head of Global Airport Operations

Gurugram, 8th April, 2024: Air India announced the appointment of Jayaraj Shanmugam as Head of Global Airport Operations.Shanmugam will assume his role on April 15th, 2024, and will report to Chief Operations Officer, Capt. Klaus Goersch. Shanmugam joins Air India from Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), where, as Chief Operating Officer, he led the operationalisation of the new Terminal 2. He has had a distinguished career spanning over 25 years in the airline, airport, and telecom industries, with stints at Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Jet Airways. Announcing Shanmugam’s appointment, Capt. Goersch said, “Jayaraj has distinctive expertise in driving excellence in customer experience and airport operations, redesigning and improving services. Malaysia Airlines and IndiGo Sign MoU to Boost Connectivity Between Two Key Tourism Markets

3rd April 2024,Delhi: Malaysia Airlines and IndiGo signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a codeshare partnership and mutual cooperation agreement. The agreement will enable both carriers to provide customers with more options and flexibility for seamless travels between Malaysia and India. Through this cooperation, Malaysia Airlines will be able to strengthen its connectivity into India as the marketing carrier on IndiGo operated flights, while IndiGo customers get to explore more Southeast Asia destinations through Malaysia Airlines’ extensive network. This reciprocal arrangement will allow both carriers to provide seamless connections to their customers, besides enabling them to enjoy an integrated travel itinerary among other facilities. Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group, said, “With India being our largest international market, we are delighted to enter this MoU with IndiGo to further widen our reach beyond the nine hubs we currently operate within India. Aventure Aviation to offer AVIAN Embraer and Bombardier Inventory

4th April, 2024,Peachtree City, Georgia USA Aventure Aviation (“Aventure”) has signed an Agreement with AVIAN Inventory Management (“Avian”), to represent and sell inventory owned by Avian that is stored in Avian’s 72,000 square foot global headquarters in Orlando, Florida. Avian is a division of AVIAN Component Solutions, which provides customized inventory capital solutions and finances to the aviation industry. Under the agreement, Avian has added Aventure in their proprietary Sales Channel Partners (SCPs) program allowing both companies to bring a customer-centric approach to aviation component sales and distribution. “Our new partnership with Avian will allow us to further expand our extensive inventory of parts and provide our Embraer and Bombardier customers with additional support,” said Aventure president Talha Faruqi. “We will have permanent Aventure team members working in Avian’s Orlando warehouse to support our customers.” Ian Gurekian, Avian CEO commented, “We are expanding and optimizing this solution for our customers and the industry by bringing our unique SCP approach to the market for aviation parts and components. Induction of Helicopter Unit at Air Force Station Thanjavur

New Delhi, 20th March 2024: Southern Air Command (SAC) was established in Jul 84 in response to certain geopolitical developments to ensure effective command and control of IAF assets and facilitate quick deployment of combat forces in the event of threats developing in the Indian Ocean Region. In a recent redeployment of IAF assets, one Helicopter Unit was inducted at Air Force Station Thanjavur on 19 Mar 24. Air Mshl B Manikantan AVSM VM, AOC-in-C SAC was present during the induction ceremony. Induction of the helicopter unit at Thanjavur would ensure availability of sufficient resources with HQ SAC to enhance operational capabilities as well as meet the peacetime tasks of Search and Rescue, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) and Casualty evacuation.

The front cover highlights three different images, first for the Union Civil Aviation Minister ….. who is leading from the front to steer Indian Civil Aviation sector to witness one of the most interesting phases. He is also facing most tumultuous timing due to the ongoing financial stress in the Aviation sector due to ATF rising cost and long airspace restrictions resulting in mounting losses for Indian carriers. Despite of all the ground level challenges,the minister is addressing new things on regular basis which keeps the sector motivated. We have featured many such developmental works in this edition done under his guidance which will be interesting to read.

Our lead story on “ The West War” is another important feature which covers the ground level reality of the challenges faced by the Aviation sector. Its though time ahead and we believe it will pass soon .
