Aviation India summit set to soar this week in Delhi

New Delhi, 10th June 2024: This week in Delhi, top aviation leaders across the world will assemble together to attend the inaugural Aviation India Summit & Exhibition on 12th & 13th June at JW Marriott in Aerocity. The summit will be attended by 500 delegates having top profiles as the leaders and representatives from government, regulators, airlines, business aircraft operators, airports, training organisations, MRO providers manufacturers and aviation services. Under the theme “New India Rising: How India’s aviation renaissance can achieve global ambitions”,the summit will address the key issues and challenges that the region faces as it plans for rapid growth to restore its position in the aviation and aerospace world. “This is first Aviation India Summit,” said Alan Peaford MBE, the chair of the conference. “These regional summits have proved successful in other parts of the world such as the Middle East and Africa, where demand for air travel has risen exponentially and the industry has had to find ways to collaborate and cooperate in order to support airline orders and to bring direct economic benefit to the countries where they operate.” The challenges facing South Asia are not unique. Preparing a workforce and addressing how to develop a diverse workforce to meet staffing and skill demands are at the heart of the solution. Pilot shortages – along with the time lag between recruitment and qualifying – is one. A key panel will look at how the Indian pilot training infrastructure is adjusting to support the growth of airlines with speakers including Romy Hawatt, Chairman, Airways Aviation Group; Bobby Sharma, CEO, Chimes Aviation Academy; Khushbeg Jattana, GM at Simaero; and Ryan Van Wijk, CEO, Alt. Academy with Maximilian Buerger, the Managing Director of the training industry’s leading data provider AFM moderating. Manufacturers will address supply chain issues as well as covering the inward investment opportunities through speakers such as Ashwani Bhargava, Senior Director, Supply Chain, Boeing India and Kishore Jayaraman, President, Rolls-Royce India and South Asia. Keynote speakers include Vumlunmang Vualnam, Secretary IAS, Ministry of Civil Aviation; Amber Dubey, Senior Advisor, McKinsey & Company and former Joint Secretary at Ministry of Civil Aviation; Bharat Malkani, President, MRO Association of India and advisor to Indian government on aviation policy; Praveen P A, Director – Aerospace, Defence and Space Sectors, Government of Telangana; and Group Captain Rajesh Bali, Managing Director, Business Aircraft Operators Association of India. “The involvement of the professional industry associations for MRO, Airports and Business Aviation along with the Federation of Aviation Industry in India (FAII) has been vital for the show,” Peaford said. “Industry needs a shared voice if it is to achieve what is expected of it as we witness the passenger growth and airline orders that need to be supported.” Airports, Risk management and sustainability also come under the microscope with presentations and panels. More than 70 airlines and operators are among the registered participants from across South Asia and beyond. ‘The broad depth of the airlines attending is impressive,” Peaford said. “We have start-ups through to long established carriers, plus helicopters and GA charter businesses. Air India Express, IndiGo, Akasa Air, Fly 91 along with CEOs from neighbouring Sri Lanka, SriLankan Airlines and FitsAir are all part of an airline leaders debate Former wing commander from the Indian Airforce, industrial leader and current co-founder and SVP Operations of Akasa, Neelu Khatri will lead a top level panel to wrap the event on Thursday as the Summit debates the next steps and outcomes from the various sessions. “The networking opportunities are fantastic,” said Mark Brown, managing director of Times Aerospace Events, the organiser of the show. “This is really the last call for people to register before we have to close the doors. This may be the first of the Aviation India events but it won’t be the last.” To register go to: www.aviationindia.aero/registration

Mission Possible

Unforeseen turbulence can disrupt any industry and the COVID-19 pandemic certainly gave the aerospace industry a shake-up. However, even in such uncertain times, being brave and taking a few calculated risks can often ensure can smoother flight over the long haul. Here, JPB Système CEO, Damien Marc, explains how inspiration from President Macron helped him and others navigate unchartered skies. Operating within the aerospace sector for almost 30 years now, I have experienced many peaks and troughs; a constant cycle of adversity and triumph that upon reflection, makes me proud of not only personal achievements but the growth and adaptation of the industry as a collective. The old saying ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going’ certainly applies in our area of industry, with those who are characterised by a willingness to take calculated risks, challenge the status quo, and seize opportunities for growth and advancement typically among those that succeed in flying higher and for longer. The most significant challenge in recent memory was of course the COVID pandemic of four years ago. There’s never a good time to confront a pandemic, but for our company, it came at a particularly poor time, shortly after we had just commissioned a new facility as well as two announcing new product solutions. However, inspired by our country’s president, who as COVID struck, encouraged manufacturers to ‘be brave’, and trust that our government would support us, we decided to proceed with our plans. With the president’s words ringing in our ears, we – with a little bit of trepidation – pressed on with the construction of our new facility and drove forward with the new product solutions.Probably like a few other companies trying to get ahead of the curve, we also decided to over-stock on materials so that we could react quicker upon the industry’s recovery. Although aware that the cash conversion would be degraded from the decision to overstock ahead of the actual need, we were keen to maintain customer satisfaction and not lose business. It’s probably fair to say that those employers who – despite operations slowing down – managed to retain their staff, are probably the ones who are impacted much less now that production has ramped up and re-recruitment proving a widespread challenge. This is certainly the case from our perspective. Meanwhile, the president’s call proved to be more than just empty words. Recognising those whose ambitions aligned with their goals to support innovation and accelerate the transformation of key industry sectors, the government recently awarded funding to manufacturers to develop new product solutions and invest in advanced manufacturing technologies to create them. With 60% growth since 2019 and over 60 new hires, 2024 sees us look proudly to the opening of our new production facility, which via an advanced Industry 4.0 enabled platform embodies our vision for the future and supports our drive to invent and diversify for decades to come. This success would not have been possible without us taking some calculated risks here and there but I’m sure we are not alone in being unafraid to make the occasional bold business decision. Every challenge requires a different solution for sure, however recent experiences have taught us that there is a certain amount of truth in the adage that fortune favours the brave. Cathay and Singapore Airlines to collaborate on sustainability initiatives

5th June 2024, Singapore: Cathay and Singapore Airlines (SIA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a broad range of sustainability initiatives. These collective efforts are aimed at advocating for the development and use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)in the Asia-Pacific region, a critical decarbonisation lever for the sector, and sharing best practices to boost sustainability performance. The MoU was signed by Cathay Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr Ronald Lam and Singapore Airlines CEO Mr Goh Choon Phong in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, on the sidelines of the 80th International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit. The agreement, which focuses on two key areas, underscores both carriers’ commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and affirms their aspiration to help drive sustainability changes in the airline industry. Firstly, Cathay and SIA will jointly advocate for the greater use of SAF in the Asia-Pacific region. Initiatives in this area will include raising public awareness about SAF’s critical role in decarbonising aviation, advocating for supportive policies in the region, and promoting the creation of a standard global accounting and reporting framework to ensure the transparency and verifiability of emission reductions from the use of the fuel. The airlines will also explore potential opportunities for joint procurement of SAF at selected locations. These are aimed at boosting SAF production and supporting its wider adoption in the airline industry. The second area of focus will be the exchange of best practices to reduce single-use plastics, minimise waste, and improve energy efficiency in ground and cargo operations. This will allow Cathay and SIA to improve their sustainability performance, and speed up the development and implementation of sustainable solutions in their operations. Mr Ronald Lam, Chief Executive Officer, Cathay Group, said: “As part of our collaborative ethos of ‘Greener Together’, we actively seek like-minded industry leaders for strategic partnerships in transitioning to sustainable aviation. Our collaboration with Singapore Airlines aims to accelerate and support the development of the SAF supply chain in the region, fostering a reliable SAF ecosystem to enable the industry to achieve its long-term decarbonisation goals. Cathay was one of the first airlines in Asia to set a target of 10% SAF for its total fuel consumption by 2030, and we are undertaking a multi-pronged approach to contribute to the aviation industry’s transition towards a greener future.” Mr Goh Choon Phong, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Airlines, said: “Singapore Airlines is committed to embedding sustainability in all aspects of our operations. At the same time, we recognise that we cannot achieve our targets alone. Our partnership with Cathay signifies our mutual ambition to enhance collaboration in sustainability initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region. Together we are helping to set the foundation for a more sustainable aviation industry, and ensure that future generations continue to reap the benefits of air travel.”
