Air India Enters codeshare agreement with Aix Connect

New Delhi, 25 September 2023: Air India has entered into a codeshare agreement with AIX Connect (formerly known as Air Asia India). Air India will add its ‘AI’ designator code to over 100 flights a day operated by AIX Connect on 21 routes. More routes under the codeshare agreement will be added progressively. The codeshare implementation enables Air India guests to connect seamlessly on AIX Connect’s route network to and from over 80 points across Air India’s extensive domestic and international network.The scope of the agreement between the two airlines enables guests to receive their boarding passes at the first point of departure for all the travel sectors on a single ticket, and have their baggage checked-in through to their final destinations. Guests connecting from international to domestic flights will, however, need to clear customs at the first point of entry in India, in line with government regulations. AIX Connect will honour the free baggage allowance mentioned on tickets issued by Air India. Air India guests connecting on to flights operated by AIX Connect will also be able to enjoy complimentary meals on board. With the implementation of the codeshare agreement, Air India has expanded its domestic route network to 4 new destinations in India, namely Bagdogra, Bhubaneswar, Ranchi, and Surat, in addition to the common destinations between the two airlines’ route networks. Customers from these originating cities will be able to connect to Air India’s wide international network over hubs at Delhi and Mumbai.

Bharat Drone Shakti 2023 vows India to be major drone hub by 2030

New Delhi, 25th Sept. 2023: Bharat Drone Shakti 2023, a first-of-its-kind drone exhibition cum display was inaugurated by RM Rajnath Singh at Air Force Station, Hindan in Ghaziabad. It has been jointly organised by Indian Air Force (IAF) and Drone Federation of India (DFI). The two-day event, which is being held on September 25 & 26, 2023, features over 75 drone start-ups from across the country. The drones featured during the event can be employed for a variety of military and civil applications. By showcasing their capabilities through a series of aerial & statics demonstrations, the IAF and DFI seek to bolster the Government’s initiative to make India a major drone hub by 2030. The inauguration of Bharat Drone Shakti 2023 was followed by the formal induction of the first C-295 MW transport aircraft into the IAF. The ceremony consisted of a ‘Sarv Dharm Puja’ and a brief on the capabilities of the aircraft. This medium lift tactical aircraft, which is capable of taking off and landing from unprepared landing grounds, will replace the HS-748 Avro aircraft. The RM exuded confidence that the induction of C-295 will bolster medium lift tactical capability of the IAF. He termed the defence and aerospace sectors as the two important pillars for making India self-reliant in the coming years. While the first 16 of the 56 contracted aircraft will be delivered to the IAF in a ‘fly-away’ condition, the remaining 40 would be manufactured in India by Tata Advanced Systems Limited at their facility in Vadodara. The first IAF squadron to be equipped with the aircraft, 11 Squadron (The Rhinos), is also based at Vadodara. During the event, the RM  & the dignitaries were also briefed on the latest in-house innovations of the IAF at an exhibition which featured projects such as a Hybrid Drone Detection System, Al Engine for fault diagnosis, a Fly-By-Wire Tester, Stabilized Power Supply Trolleys, QR Code based Tool Crib management system and also modern teaching aids. Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Road, Transport & Highways General (Dr) VK Singh (Retd), Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, senior officers of the three services, Defence Attaches & officials from friendly foreign countries as well as representatives of the Indian industry attended the event.

Tezu Airport in Arunachal Pradesh gets a New Terminal Building

New Delhi, 25th September, 2023: Tezu Airport in Arunachal Pradesh got a New Terminal Building with enhanced capacity and better services. Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of Civil Aviation& Steel inaugurated the New Terminal Building on 24th Sept, 2023 in the august presence of Chowna Mein, Deputy Chief Minister, Arunachal Pradesh & Nakap Nalo, Minister of Tourism &Civil Aviation, Arunachal Pradesh among other dignitaries. At this occasion,the minster announced three direct routes from Itanagar under the UDAN 5.0 i.e. Itanagar to Delhi, Itanagar to Jorhat, and Itanagar to Rupsi which will be operationalised soon. The new terminal building is made by AAI along with an Air Traffic Control cum Fire Station at Tezu Airport in Arunachal Pradesh at an estimated cost of Rs.170 Cr to cater to much needed aspiration of the local community. Constructed in an area of 4000sqm., the new terminal building is equipped to serve 300 passengers during peak hours and 8 lakhs annually. The New Terminal has been designed to prioritize functionality, efficiency, and passenger comfort. The building interior emanates a sense of calm, uncluttered spaces that offer a place for passengers to relax, away from the stress of their long journeys. The interiors of the building also depict local handicrafts, paintings and promote tourist destinations. The terminal will provide all modern passenger facilities like VIP lounge, food & beverage counters, restaurant and retail shops etc. The new terminal building is also equipped with various sustainability features. Tezu airport is currently connected to Imphal, Dibrugarh & Guwahati through regular scheduled flights by Alliance Air &Flybig airlines. The upgraded Tezuairport will not only improve the passenger experience but also contribute significantly to the development of the local economy. The airport will also be able to serve passengers, thereby increasing the flow of tourists and business travellers to the region. This will help in creating new jobs and boosting the local tourism industry.

The future of Aviation will be defined by perfect harmony between human expertise and automation

Jaideep Mirchandani, the Group Chairman of the UAE-based Aviation conglomerate Sky One FZE outlines the elements that will make aviation seamlessly efficient and safer in the more years to come. On December 17, 2023, we will mark the 120th anniversary of the historic moment when Wilbur and Orville Wright achieved the first powered airplane flight with the Wright Flyer. Since that pivotal event in 1903, the commercial aviation sector has undergone a remarkable evolution, expanding in various dimensions. The shift from five-person crews (two pilots, a flight engineer, a radio operator, and a navigator) in the 1950s to just two pilots and more streamlined aircraft with state-of-the-art engines are among the pivotal factors that have shaped the aviation landscape. Beyond the Jet Age, developments such as the creation of supersonic passenger aircraft and the emergence of Boeing as a prominent civilian manufacturer with its renowned 737 MAX, alongside Airbus and its famous A320 family, also marked significant changes. Today, global aviation finds itself at a juncture where the convergence of human expertise and technology is profoundly influencing its trajectory. With the evolution of each new generation of aircraft, the flight deck has become increasingly technologically advanced, enabling pilots to delegate flying tasks to automated systems and concentrate their attention on vital aspects such as navigation, air traffic management, and monitoring aircraft status. The integration of further technological advancements is poised to bring about a dramatic transformation in the role of pilots within the next 10 to 15 years, as highlighted by American firm Oliver Wyman in its study. This transformation is supported by insights from Geoff Murray, a former airline pilot and active flight instructor. He foresees substantial enhancements to modern cockpits, including the incorporation of multi-touchscreen capabilities, the implementation of synthetic vision technology to enhance situational awareness, and the introduction of 3D modelling to provide a more comprehensive representation of the surrounding environment. Furthermore, the adoption of wearable avionics, including head-mounted displays, already in use in military aviation, is also anticipated. The industry will also need more aviation talent. According to the Aviation Talent Forecast 2023 from Canadian flight training company CAE Inc., the aviation industry will require a total of 2,80,000 new pilots over the next decade. The Asia Pacific region alone will have a demand for 91,000 commercial pilots, while North America will need 63,000 for commercial services. The statistics also underscore the need for a talent pool of future pilots who can readily embrace and adapt to new technologies. Their training should also be aligned with futuristic technology and connectivity-based tools in the cockpit. Future of Aviation So what does the future of aviation look like? Will it be defined by single-pilot operations (SPO) assisted by smart onboard automation and ground operators? Many experts hold the opinion that the adoption of SPO and autonomous flying could potentially have a negative impact on the demand for pilots. Nevertheless, I contend that a widespread shift toward single-pilot operations is likely to be a gradual process. Similarly, the integration of self-flying planes will also require a measured approach. Regulatory considerations, safety aspects, the establishment of a unified data connectivity system, labor negotiations, and cybersecurity enhancements are among the key factors that must be addressed before such a transition can be realized. And what part will Artificial Intelligence (AI) play in this scenario? A study from UK-based Technavio, says that the use of AI in the aviation market is projected to experience substantial growth, with an estimated Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 43.13 percent between 2022 and 2027. The forecast indicates an increase in market size by USD 3,642.91 million. AI tools can play a major role in the aviation industry by assisting airlines in scheduling, route optimization, and improved crew management. On the logistical front, AI can be deployed for supply chain management, inventory enhancement, and cargo monitoring. Virtual assistant tools contribute to more personalized passenger experiences. Additionally, AI contributes to safety and security enhancements by monitoring and analyzing data from security cameras and sensors to bolster safety and security measures. The Generative AI tools also have the potential to assist in improved aircraft design and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO. Predictive maintenance, identifying recurring defects in the aircraft, rapid data collection and assessment, and even the use of robots to inspect components are all possible with the help of this technology. As for the primary challenges that warrant attention, data safety emerges as a major concern. AI tools rely heavily on extensive datasets of impeccable quality to generate precise outcomes. Within the aviation sector, acquiring such data can prove to be demanding due to ethical considerations, encompassing apprehensions related to data privacy, bias, and potential job displacement as well as automation bias (excessive reliance on automated aids and decision support systems). Moreover, air traffic control and aircraft maintenance systems represent highly intricate infrastructures. The integration of AI tools into these systems must be executed with meticulous care to preserve their inherent attributes, including compatibility, security, and reliability. The integration of rapid automation poses a challenge for policymakers in terms of establishing suitable regulations for these emerging technologies and determining the extent of their oversight. This challenge becomes even more pronounced when dealing with technologies like AI, given its continuously evolving nature. Therefore, it is vital to strike a balance between the application of technical tools and the effective management of associated challenges. Implementing the technology in a manner that prioritizes safety, ethical use, responsibility, and the establishment of a comprehensive legal framework that effectively addresses the multifaceted aspects of AI are essential to ensure that it provides a net benefit to the aviation sector. And what about the human factor in aviation? The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has already emphasized the need for a more human-centric approach to AI in aviation. According to expert studies, it is not plausible to assert that automation will entirely replace human operations in the aviation sector, at least not in the next one or two decades. For instance,

AAI inducts two new B-360 type of aircraft into the AAI Flight Inspection Fleet

New Delhi, 18th September, 2023: To meet the flying requirement for Flight Calibration of the increased number of Ground Navigational/landing aids installed at airports in India and PBN Procedures validation, Airports Authority of India (AAI) has added two new B-360 type of aircraft equipped with advanced state-of -the -art Flight Inspection system into the AAI Flight Inspection Fleet. With the induction of these new aircraft in its fleet, AAI will be able to accomplish the timely flight calibration of the Ground Radio Navigational/visual aids at all airports in the country. AAI will also provide necessary support by undertaking flight calibrations in the neighboring countries, which will also lead to generation of revenue. The induction of two new aircraft into active flight calibration service was flagged off by Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel;General (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh, Union Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways and Civil Aviation & Vumlunmang Vualnam, Secretary, Civil Aviation, Sanjeev Kumar, Chairman, AAI in a Poojan Ceremony held at Safdarjung Airport, New Delhi. The Flight Inspection Unit of Airports Authority of India is a very critical component in the safety chain of Air Navigation Service provided by Airports Authority of India throughout the Indian airspace. Considering the importance of aviation infrastructures and expanding network of airports in the country, navigational aids are also being set up at all airports for safe flight movements. On this occasion HMCA said, AAI has inducted two new B-360 type of aircraft equipped with advanced technology into the AAI Flight Inspection Unit’s Fleet. Flight calibration services ensure efficient and safe operation of aircraft by validating various Air Navigation Services Procedures. These aircraft will be used in Calibrating the Category I, II and III Instrument Landing Systems, DVORs, DME, NDB, Radar, GBAS, PAPI, TACAN etc. They will also be validating the RNP and LPV procedures as also the Instrument Approach Letdown procedures for DVOR/DME and ILS. Flight Inspection being critical in ensuring the best international standards as set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), needs to keep pace to ensure Indian aviation gets this equipment to function to the strictest parameters. Presently, The FIU of AAI operates One Dornier-228 and One B-350 aircraft for Flight Calibration /Inspection purposes and calibrates the Navigational aids like, Doppler VOR, DME, NDB, Landing aids like Instrument Landing Systems and Precision Approach Path Indicator installed at the numerous airports around the country. Established in 1959 at Bamrauli, Allahabad known as Prayagraj, FIU was shifted to Safdarjung Airport in 1986. Starting with Dakota aircraft, FIU then moved on to HS748 AVRO and then on to Dornier DO-228 and Beechcraft King Air B350.

DAC approves AoN for nine capital acquisition proposals for the Armed Forces worth Rs 45,000 crore

New Delhi, 15h Sept 2023: Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for nine capital acquisition proposals of approx. Rs 45,000 crore. All these procurements will be made from Indian vendors under Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured (IDMM)/Buy (Indian) category which will give substantial boost to the Indian defence Industry towards achieving the goal of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.To enhance protection, mobility, attack capability and increased survivability of Mechanised Forces, the DAC accorded the AoN for procurement of Light Armoured Multipurpose Vehicles (LAMV) and Integrated Surveillance and Targeting System (ISAT-S). The DAC cleared AoN for procurement of High Mobility Vehicle (HMV) Gun Towing Vehicles for swift mobilisation and deployment of Artillery Guns and Radars. The DAC also approved procurement of Next Generation Survey Vessels for the Indian Navy which will greatly enhance its capabilities in performing Hydrographic Operations. The DAC also accorded AoN for proposals of the Indian Air Force which included Avionic upgradation of Dornier Aircraft to improve the accuracy and reliability for operations. The procurement of Dhruvastra Short Range Air-to-Surface Missile as a potent Indigenous Precision Guided Weapon for indigenously built ALH Mk-IV Helicopters has been cleared by the DAC. The AoN for procurement of 12 Su-30 MKI Aircraft with associated equipment from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) was also accorded. During the meeting, Shri Rajnath Singh stated that it is time to upgrade the ambitions towards indigenisation. “Rather than a threshold of 50% indigenous content for IDDM projects, we should aim for a minimum 60-65% indigenous content,” he said. The Raksha Mantri directed the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, Defence Secretary and DG (Acquisition) to work towards increasing the minimum indigenous content threshold in consultation with the Indian Industry.

Zooom Airlines revives AOC to commence commercial passenger operations in India

Delhi, 15th Sept.2023: Zooom Airlines has received Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the DGCA and will soon commence commercial passenger operations in India. The AOC is a crucial certification for any airline, as it signifies that an operator has met the stringent safety, operational, and regulatory standards set by the civil aviation authorities. Zooom Airlines CEO Atul Gambhir said,”With our AOC in hand, we look forward to provide passengers with a top-notch travel experience that combines convenience, efficiency, and comfort.” He further added, “Our CRJ 200 aircraft will provide domestic travellers with unprecedented speed on each route. We wish to cater to the growing number of domestic travellers who take frequent flights and expect comfortable travel with reliable speed.’ “Indian domestic aviation is growing, and customers are looking for the most cost-effective, safe, and convenient solutions. We are confident in our ability to carve out a niche by offering a unique and innovative travel experience,’ he added. The airline has plans for expansion and introducing new routes once they start the flight operations. Zooom Airlines formerly operated as Zoom Airlines is owned by Gurugram based Zexus Air Services Pvt. Ltd and it has fleet of Bombardier CRJ 200 series Aircraft.The current AOC has been issued on 14th Sept. 2023 and is valid till 13th Sept 2024 as per DGCA certification details.

Vistara to start daily non-stop flights between Delhi – Hong Kong

Delhi, 15 September 2023: Vistara has announced daily non-stop flights between Delhi and Hong Kong, starting 29 October 2023. The airline will operate its A321 Neo aircraft featuring a three-class configuration on this route. Bookings for the flights are being progressively opened on all channels, including Vistara’s website, mobile app, and through travel agents. Vinod Kannan, Chief Executive Officer, Vistara, said, “We are delighted to add Hong Kong to our fast-growing global network. Hong Kong is one of the world’s most premier financial and commercial hubs that continues to draw significant corporate traffic from India. It has also been a very popular destination for Indian tourists. With the addition of Hong Kong, we are now able to offer our customers direct connectivity to and from three of the world’s top financial centres, the others being London and Singapore.”

BLR Airport’s T 2 commences Int. operations

Bengaluru, Sept 12, 2023: Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru commenced its international operations at Terminal 2 (T2) today, September 12, 2023, at 10:15 AM, with the arrival of Saudi Airlines’ flight SV866 from Jeddah. IndiGo was the first Indian carrier to start international operations from T2 with its flight 6E1167 to Colombo. From September 12, 2023, 10:45 AM onwards – Terminal 1 will serve as the operational hub for domestic flights of Indigo, Akasa Air, Alliance Air, and SpiceJet. Terminal 2 will be dedicated exclusively to all international flights along with domestic flights of AirAsia, Air India, Star Air and Vistara. Hari Marar, MD & CEO of Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) said – “We are thrilled to commence international operations at T2. With its modern infrastructure, efficient processes and diverse retail and dining options, T2 aims to redefine the passenger journey. We look forward to strengthening Bengaluru’s global connectivity while upholding the highest safety standards and ensuring a seamless transition for all international passengers”.

MoCA to participate in Special Campaign 3.0 from 2nd – 31st Oct 2023 for disposal of pending matters & promoting Swachhata

New Delhi, 13th Sept 2023: With the objective of disposal of pending matters and promoting Swachhata, the Ministry of Civil Aviation is scheduled to participate in the Special Campaign 3.0 from 2nd October till the 31st October 2023, with the preparatory phase for the campaign starting on 15th September 2023. Ministry of Civil Aviation participated in the Special Campaign 2.0 for disposal of pending matters and Swachhata during 02nd -31st October, 2022 with the objective of institutionalizing Swachhata and reducing pendency in Government offices. Apart from the Ministry, all attached offices, including field offices, Autonomous Bodies and PSUs participated in the campaign. The cleanliness campaign was conducted at 134 locations across the country. During the campaign, a total of 43224 physical files were reviewed, out of which 32919 physical files were weeded out, 42,786 square feet of space freed and revenue of Rs. 2,65,91,760/- generated from scrap disposal. Additionally, 582 Public Grievances and 145 Public Grievance Appeals were also disposed during the campaign. The campaign continued beyond October 2022. The highlights of the achievements made by Ministry of Civil aviation and its organizations during December 2022 – August 2023 are: • 6577 Public grievances disposed of • 314 MP and VIP references disposed of • 109189 square feet of space freed • Rs. 2,21,07,809 Revenue earned through scrap disposal • 11283 files weeded out • 36 rules simplified
