    Embraer signs MoU with Portuguese Defense Industry

    Alverca, Portugal, April 24th, 2023: Embraer announced today, during the visit to Portugal by the President of the Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the country’s aerospace companies at an event attended by Portugal´s Prime Minister, António Costa. The MoU was signed with the companies: Centro de Engenharia e Desenvolvimento de Produto (CEiiA), Empordef Tecnologias de Informação, S.A. (ETI), GMVIS Skysoft, S.A. (GMV) and OGMA S.A.“I’m very pleased to celebrate a new phase in the relationship between Embraer and the Portuguese State, through the Defense Industry of Portugal, which is a reference for us in cooperation in aerospace and defense projects. The results of the C-390 Millennium strategic partnership have shown the potential that companies and governments of the two countries, working together, can achieve,” said Francisco Gomes Neto, President and CEO of Embraer.The main goal of the MoU is the development of the Technological and Industrial Defense Base of Portugal, reinforcing its capacity to develop engineering, research, and development activities. Thus, Embraer reinforces its long-term strategic commitment with Portugal in the development of its aerospace and defense ecosystem.A key aspect covered by the MoU is the potential strategic relationship for the development and systems integration for the recently launched A-29N version of the Super Tucano, which is intended to meet the needs of the member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). This includes research, technological development, and innovation, with the aim to expand and increase long-term commercial relations between companies during the development, production, and support phases of the operation of the A-29N aircraft. “Today, with the signing of this memorandum, we take another important step in the continuous development of technologies related to the A-29 Super Tucano. The interest of NATO countries in this aircraft led Embraer to announced, recently, the launch of a new version, the A-29N, which, we are sure, will achieve a great success in the international market,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO, Embraer Defense & Security.

    Chapman Freeborn appoints Russell Cook as Industry Vertical Director – Automotive

    Chapman Freeborn, the global aircraft charter specialist and part of Avia Solutions Group, has appointed Russell Cook as Industry Vertical Director – Automotive. Cook has had a career in freight forwarding for over 30 years, 20 of which have been spent looking after automotive clients. He previously held roles at companies including Emery Worldwide, UPS and DB Schenker, and also co-founded a fintech startup. In his new role as Industry Vertical Director – Automotive, Cook will engage with Chapman Freeborn’s automotive clients globally, assist with their supply chains and work with freight forwarders directly, based on each situation’s individual needs. “The automotive vertical at Chapman Freeborn is a specialist area of service delivery and I am delighted to provide this unique opportunity and value proposition to our clients”, Cook said. “I look forward to utilising my two decades of insight and expertise on global automotive supply chains to provide structure to the vertical and engage with clients, new and existing, across the world.     Safran on board of the Eurodrone programme

    Vélizy, April 25th 2023 Safran Landing Systems has signed a contract with Airbus Defence and Space to provide the wheels and brakes system work package for the Eurodrone, Europe’s new MALE RPAS (Medium Altitude Long Endurance Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) reconnaissance drone. Safran Landing Systems was selected to design, develop, qualify and produce the work package including wheels, brakes and hydro-mechanical equipment, and to supply the braking control module, to be developed by Safran Electronics & Defense, the company’s partner on this programme.The contract comprises 60 shipsets. François Bastin, Safran Landing Systems CEO said,“We are proud to work on this programme with Airbus Defence and Space. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate both our know-how and ability to develop the technologies that will equip this unprecedented new military system. We are looking forward to meeting a number of technical challenges on this programme, especially weight reduction, and delivering the best possible value proposition to our customer.” Safran Electronics & Defense has also won a contract from Leonardo to develop and supply the high-performance EuroflirTM 610 electro-optical (optronic) system, for the Eurodrone. The Eurodrone programme is designed to outfit France, Germany, Spain and Italy with a highly autonomous medium-altitude reconnaissance drone, thus bolstering the European Union’s operational and industrial sovereignty. Production of the first prototype should start in 2024 with a first delivery planned by the end of the decade.

    Air Mauritius, the flagship carrier of Mauritius will resume its direct operations from Delhi from May 03, 2023 onwards. At this occasion, Mr. Kresimir Kucko, CEO of Air Mauritius speaks with Vishal Kashyap, Managing Editor, Aviation World on resumption from the capital city, fleet expansions and many more key issues. Excerpt from the interview…   What’s the news that you want to share for the Delhi sector? Air Mauritius has 50 years of presence in India with the flights and after the Covid, we restored the first flight to Mumbai which we are doing six times a week and now we are very proud to announce introducing flights to Delhi from 3rd May 2023 onwards. So, we are going to start with twice weekly flights and hopefully in October-November 2023 we may add the third weekly flights between Mauritius and Delhi. Which type of aircraft will be pressed into operations for Delhi –Mauritius sector and what will be its frequency? We are going to fly with Airbus 330 and it will be twice a week now and as I said in Oct-Nov 23 we will add third flight. So, basically same as the flight type to Mumbai. We are using a long haul fleet for our flight operations between Mauritius and India. Could you focus on total number of fleets that Air Mauritius have at present. Also the expansion schedule for this year and beyond? We are adding just as we speak another Airbus 330 and one more in few months. So, we have 4 Airbus A 350-900 XWB; 2 A330-300neo; 2 A330- 200; 3 ATR 72-500 aircraft. We have another one coming up in October 2023. This is the plan for current calendar year and next year in 2024, we will most likely add some regional fleet but then also from Airbus 320 family only. At the moment, we have two categories of fleets and will add more in later part of the year. What volume of tourist that you are looking forward to target with adding Delhi flight? India has very strong ties with Mauritius which are based on people to people relations. There is lot of family relations staying in both the country. So, its mix of travelers which includes not only leisure and honeymooners but also lot of business travelers as well. We have basically all major categories of passengers flying back and forth between Mauritius and India. Apart from India which other major countries that airline is connecting? We are flying to Europe and we are further expanding our European flights. We fly daily to Paris and from October 23 we will have a daily flight to London which is at present 5 times a week. In October 2023 we will add Geneva also as a seasonal destination. We are also flying to South Africa, Rodrigues Island, Kuala Lumpur and Australia and other few countries. Anything specific you would like to say about your association with Air Mauritius? I am 30+ plus years in this business .So I did basically everything accept flying and repairing the aircrafts at some point of my career. This is my 11th year as a CEO in my 3rd Company. I am very competitive and I would do my best to bring same success if not better with Air Mauritius as I did with Air Croatia and Gulf Air.     EAMRO 2023 thrusts on Emerging Trends in Aviation MRO

A Panel Discussion on Challenges in implementing New Age MRO solutions resonated well with the audience as the panelists were able to connect with them on a day-to-day problem being faced.     Rosoboronexport launches import-substituted Typhoon-K MRAP vehicle in foreign markets

    20th April 2023, Moscow: Rosoboronexport (part of the Rostec State Corporation) has started providing fully import-substituted Typhoon K-53949 mine resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles in foreign markets.”Rosoboronexport presents to its partners an armored vehicle of the Typhoon-K family assembled exclusively from Russian-made components. This vehicle has proven to be a reliable and highly protected personnel carrier. The Typhoon-K is in service with the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and has substantiated its performance under actual operating and combat conditions. Moreover, many of Rosoboronexport’s partners are operating armored vehicles based on this family of vehicles and give them positive feedback,” said Rosoboronexport Director General Alexander Mikheev. “This MRAP vehicle is of great interest for Middle Eastern, African, Latin American, Asia-Pacific and former USSR countries. Independence from foreign components in the production of the Typhoon-K gives us and our partners confidence in timely and complete after-sale service of the vehicles supplied, their modernization and development.” The Typhoon-K vehicles feature high reliability, maneuverability, cross-country ability and innovative approaches to their protection, ergonomics, layout and equipment. They can ford up to 1.5 meters without preparation and climb 30-degree slopes. With a new generation 350hp diesel engine, the Typhoon K-53949 can reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h. All models of the Typhoon-K family are equipped with an onboard information management system, a central tire inflation system, bullet-proof tires, an all-round video surveillance system, an automatic fire-extinguishing system, and a diesel auxiliary power unit (APU). In addition, remotely controlled weapon stations with stabilized armament can be mounted on them. The armament suite varies depending on customer needs. The 4×4 vehicles are equipped with a hinged ramp in the rear to allow troops to board and disembark from them quickly and easily. Vast experience in the development and operation of army vehicles has been complemented by new approaches to design and state-of-the-art technologies of protection against the most dangerous threats. Typhoon K-53949 armored vehicles are distinguished by enhanced mine and ballistic protection corresponding to NATO STANAG 4569 Level 3 with the possibility of strengthening it to Level 4. A high level of protection is provided by composite armor, including an armored hull and add-on armor plates with ceramic elements, as well as a streamlined hull design and removable anti-mine plates. Troop seats have a suspended system of attachment to the roof, are equipped with blast energy absorbing elements, safety belts and head restraints for fixing the head. In addition, the designers have provided for the possibility of installing additional protection – internal spall liners, as well as special hinged mats to increase the level of protection against anti-tank grenade launchers. Vehicles for various purposes are being developed from the Typhoon-K chassis by installing weapons, process, engineer and other special equipment.”Rosoboronexport sees great interest from foreign customers and is ready to cooperate in the format of industrial partnership in the production of various versions of Typhoon-K vehicles, including localization of their production. Today, we have a significant portfolio of completed projects on licensed production, cooperation within joint ventures, as well as building an infrastructure for the maintenance and modernization of Russian military equipment on the territory of partners,” Alexander Mikheev added.

    UDAN 5.0 Launched; to achieve last mile connectivity

    New Delhi, 24th April 2023: Following the four successful rounds of bidding, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has launched the 5th round of the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) to further enhance the connectivity to remote and regional areas of the country and achieve last mile connectivity. Key Features of UDAN 5.0 are as follows: *This round of UDAN focuses on Category-2 (20-80 seats) and Category-3 (>80 seats). *The earlier stage length cap of 600 km is waived off and there is no restriction on the distance between the origin and destination of the flight. *Viability gap funding (VGF) to be provided will be capped at 600 km stage length for both Priority and Non-Priority areas which was earlier capped at 500 km. *No predetermined routes would be offered. Only Network and Individual Route Proposal proposed by airlines will be considered. *The airlines would be required to submit an action/business plan after 2 months from the issuance of LoA wherein they submit their aircraft acquisition plan/availability of aircraft, crew, slots, etc. at the time of the Technical Proposal. *The same route will not be awarded to a single airline more than once, whether in different networks or in the same network. *Exclusivity will be withdrawn if the average quarterly PLF is higher than 75% for four continuous quarters, to prevent exploitation of the monopoly on a route. *25% of the Performance Guarantee to be encashed for each month of delay up to 4 months, to further incentivize quick operationalization. *Airlines would be required to commence operations within 4 months of the award of the route. Earlier this deadline was 6 months. *A list of airports that are ready for operation or would soon be ready for operations has been included in the scheme to facilitate quicker operationalization of routes under the Scheme. * Novation process for routes from one operator to another is simplified and incentivized. Commenting on the launch of UDAN 5.0, the Minister of Civil Aviation & Steel, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia said, “UDAN has proved to be a lifeblood of many regions which are now well connected with places across the country. This new & stronger version of the scheme will raise the momentum, connecting new routes, and bring us closer to the target of operationalizing 1000 routes & 50 additional airports, heliports, and water aerodromes in the near future. अब उड़ेगा देश का हर आम नागरिक!” UDAN Scheme has benefitted a diverse set of stakeholders. Passengers have got the benefits of air connectivity, airlines have received concessions for operating regional routes, unserved regions have received the direct and indirect benefits of air connectivity for their economic development. It is another step towards the prime minister’s vision of the common man traveling by air at affordable and subsidized airfares.

    8th India-Thailand Defence Dialogue to be held in Bangkok on 20th April

    New Delhi, 19th April 2023: At the invitation of Government of Thailand, Special Secretary, Ministry of Defence Nivedita Shukla Verma will pay an official visit to Bangkok between April 20-21, 2023. During the visit, the Special Secretary will co-chair the 8th meeting of India-Thailand Defence Dialogue with Deputy Permanent Secretary for Defence of Ministry of Defence, Thailand General Nuchit Sribunsong on April 20, 2023. During the dialogue, the co-chairs will review the defence cooperation between the two countries and explore new initiatives to further strengthen bilateral engagements. Both sides will also exchange views on regional and global issues of shared interest. As part of her visit, the Special Secretary will also call on Permanent Secretary for Defence of the Ministry of Defence, Thailand General Sanitchanog Sangkachantra. India & Thailand share a strategic partnership and defence is a key pillar of this cooperation. The bilateral defence engagements have expanded over a period of time to include wide ranging contacts between the two countries including Defence Dialogue meeting, military-to-military exchanges, high-level visits, capacity building and training programmes and bilateral exercises.

    India – Russia Space Dialogue 2023

    The first edition of the India Russia Space Dialogue 2023 was organized by Russian House New Delhi and Aviakul Private Limited on April 15 with the aim to revisit the historic milestones in the cooperation journey of the two nations, identify key moments, analyse the learnings from this bilateral cooperation and chart out the future roadmap of collaboration on various avenues in this current geopolitical scenario. The event specifically looked back at the milestone human spaceflights of Yuri Gagarin, the first man to go in space on April 12, 1961 as well as that of Wg. Cmdr Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to go in space on April 3, 1984. Ekaterina Malysheva, the granddaughter of the Russian cosmonaut, Yuri Malysheva who went into space with Wing Cmdr. Rakesh Sharma as the spacecraft’s commander shared her memories, insights and valuable anecdotes from Yuri Malysheva’s life. She shared unseen images of her grandfather and the workings of the Russian space agency. Through the images she familiarized the attendees and specially the students about the cosmonaut training process. In his keynote address, Dr. N. Suddheer Kumar, Director, Capacity Building & Public Outreach (CBPO), ISRO virtually presented a brief overview of the Indo -Russian collaboration since the beginning. He mentioned Vikram Sarabhai’s contribution in the Indian space program as well as the partnership between ISRO and ROSCOSMOS in launching of various satellites, Navic, cooperation for Gaganyaan, cryogenic technology stage, etc. Indo Russian Cooperation has been marked by a close and strategic partnership across all spectrums of relationship and when the world is reeling with many challenges across the globe like pandemic, geopolitical tensions, economic slowdown and so on, rapid technological innovations and developments in space sector has become critical more than ever. Right from launching Aryabhata, India’s first unmanned satellite in 1975, to Wg Cmdr Rakesh Sharma, first Indian to travel to space in 1984, the cooperation between the two nations has seen many pinnacles. Several decades down the line, today, both the countries harbour common ambitions to journey deeper into space through many projects like Ganaganyaan, Marsoplane – the mission to explore mars and so on. Certainly, the 75 years of Indo-Russian cooperation provides many valuable lessons that are important to further explore the unexplored areas of Indo-Russian Space partnership and unearth the endless possibilities of Outer space. The Fireside chat on the topic of 75 Years of India-Russia Space Cooperation highlighted the importance of friendship in current geopolitical situations, encouraged the Private Sector coming into the space domain, how it will expand the scope of the space sector as well as the space economy in particular. The panelists also stressed upon using outer space for people purposes as space belongs to all. Aviakul Pvt Ltd also signed an MoU with the delegation from Moscow Aviation Institute to strengthen space education in the country. In her Keynote lecture on ‘ women in aviation’ Executive Director of air India, President of IWPA, member of Indian aeronautical society Dr. Harpreet A De Singh highlighted how determination can lead women to touch the sky, she spoke about Kalpana Chawla, Sunita Williams, Sirisha Bandla, Dr. Tessy Thomas and many more inspirational women. Dr. Singh enlightened students about various fields and job roles women can take in the space sector. This was followed by a panel discussion on space for commercial opportunities. Panelists encouraged more people and the private sector to participate in the space domain as in future everything is going to be dependent on the space domain. General A. K. Bhatt, Director General, Indian Space Association, highlighted the everyday used services and product applications like GPS, Weather updates, ATM machines, water purifications, etc. Panelists also acknowledged the budget constraints and how countries’ cooperation can lead the way to 2030. The next panel discussion enlightened towards creating ecosystems that can guide and nurture young minds to create a skilled workforce. The panelists spoke about the various domains of space, the hard work, and persistence needed coupled with curiosity, and imagination. They also touched upon the available resources that the students can explore to fuel their interest in space. The discussion also mentioned about the research process and the kind that is going on in space. It also highlighted that a single space mission requires a large team of workers with distinct variety of skills and competencies to work and therefore space is a domain comprising all range of industries and professions ranging from information, telecommunication, broadcasting, trade and manufacturing of space assets, professional and business services like R&D, technical services, engineering, geophysical surveying and so on. Looking at the earth from a far you realize it is too small for conflict and just big enough for cooperation, as remarked by Yuri Gagarin. Another statement by Wg Cmdr Rakesh Sharma underlined, “Anyone who goes to space tries to look at his own country first, but soon it appears that there is no boundary between the countries and the entire world is one family where our destinies are integrated.” The dialogue that ended with a reminder to work together, to collaborate for further leaps of humans.
