INS Vikrant to be commissioned on 2nd Sept in Kochi; PM to to inaugurate the event

Kochi, 30th August 2022: The nation’s first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC-1), India’s first aircraft carrier INS vikrant will be commissioned on September 2, the Indian Navy has announced. The commissioning of the warship, which will be christened ‘Vikrant’, will mark a “historical milestone of realisation of Nation’s commitment towards AatmaNirbharta” (self-reliance), the Navy said in an official release. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chief guest on the occasion. Vikrant is the largest warship to have ever been built in India, and the first indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy. It puts India in an elite club of nations that have the capability to design and build these giant, powerful warships. “From November we will commence landing trails which we hope to complete by middle of next year. We will put in all effort so that the aircraft carrier is operational with the aircraft and the aircraft which are available with us are the MiG-29s,” Vice Adm. Ghormade said at a press conference ahead of the commissioning. The carrier should be fully operational by end 2023, he stated. He said that they have carried out five sets of trials since August 2021 and were extremely successful. “From the propulsion, equipment and weapons point of view, the ship is fully operational.” The Vice Chief Adm. said that the long-term plan was to deploy the twin-engine deck-based fighter being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, but in the interim, they are looking at procuring a jet, to be selected between the Boeing F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet and the Dassault Aviation Rafale.

Akasa Air official statement on the server glitch related to passenger information leak

India’s newest airline has a technical glitch at its server which were noticed and restored quickly by the airline.However, as the data breach was concerned to the public information,airlines, issued a public information in this regard. Airlines statement: A temporary technical configuration error related to our login and sign-up service was reported to us on Thursday August 25, 2022. As a result of this configuration error, some Akasa Air registered user information limited to names, gender, email addresses and phone numbers may have been viewed by unauthorized individuals. We can confirm that aside from the above details, no travel-related information, travel records or payment information was compromised. We have taken the following steps to mitigate risks for current and future scenarios: 1. On being made aware of this, we immediately stopped this unauthorised access by completely shutting down the associated functional elements of our system. Subsequently, having added additional controls to address this situation, we have resumed our login and sign-up services. 2. We self-reported the incident to CERT-In (which is the Government authorised nodal agency tasked to deal with incidents of this nature). 3. We have also notified the affected users of the above, have informed such users that this matter has been reported to CERT-In (which is the Government authorised nodal agency tasked to deal with incidents of this nature) and have advised users to be conscious of possible phishing attempts. We would like to clarify that basis our records there was no intentional hacking attempt, but that the situation was reported by a research expert through a journalist for which we are grateful. As a part of our commitment to be always transparent, we proactively shared this information with our customers who could have been potentially impacted. AirAsia India starts daily direct flights from Lucknow to Mumbai and Kolkata

Delhi, August 29, 2022: From 1st September, AirAsia India will commence daily direct flights from Lucknow to Mumbai and Kolkata. Adding to the airline’s existing operations connecting Lucknow through daily direct flights to Bangalore, Goa and Delhi that commenced on 5th August, AirAsia India will operate direct flights from Lucknow to Mumbai and Kolkata. The flights also connect Lucknow through convenient one-stop itineraries to other airports on its network, such as Bhubaneswar, Pune and Guwahati. Speaking about the announcement, Ankur Garg, Chief Commercial Officer, AirAsia India, said, “We are excited to be expanding our services and network for patrons in Lucknow with daily flights from Lucknow to our two hubs – Mumbai and Kolkata. We have recently added Lucknow to our network and commenced operations in the city to provide convenient flights for our guests to different parts of the country. Embraer Showcases the C-390 Millennium at the Air Power in Austria

Zeltweg, Austria, August 29, 2022: Embraer will showcase the C-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft for the first time at the Austrian airshow, the Air Power, to be held on September 2 and 3 in Zeltweg, Austria. During the event, Embraer will also highlight its portfolio of products and innovative solutions for the defense and security markets, which are present in more than 60 countries. “We are glad to have this opportunity to showcase the C-390 at this renowned Air Show and share the aircraft capabilities with the attendees of the event,” said Jackson Schneider, President & CEO, Embraer Defense & Security. “The entrance of the C-390 Millennium into the market comes at a crucial moment where air forces and governments are looking to incorporate new generation aircraft in their airlift fleets. We are seeing the C-390 operating with incredible availability rates, which is the result of a modern design for reliability, maintainability, and a selection of the best suppliers worldwide.” The C-390 Millennium and its air-to-air refueling configuration, the KC-390, are the new generation of multi-role military transport aircraft delivering unrivaled mobility and cargo capacity, rapid re-configuration, high availability, improved comfort, and flight safety, as well as optimal management of reduced operational costs through its life cycle, all in a single platform. Since the first delivery to the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), the KC-390 Millennium has proven its capability, reliability, and performance. FAB’s current fleet of KC-390s stands at five units and have exceeded 5,000 flight hours in operation with a mission completion rate of 97%, demonstrating outstanding availability and productivity in its category. The Portuguese Air Force and the Hungarian Defence Forces will start the operation of their KC-390s in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Both the Portuguese and Hungarian fleets will be capable of performing Air-Air Refueling and will be fully NATO compatible, not only in terms of hardware but also in terms of avionics and communications. The Hungarian Defence Force fleet will be the first in the world to feature an Intensive Care Unit configuration, an essential feature for performing humanitarian missions. Most recently, in June, the Netherlands Ministry of Defence announced the selection of a fleet of five C-390 Millennium aircraft, highlighting the performance and operational output of the aircraft, to succeed their current fleet of C-130 Hercules.

India & Tanzania discuss on key bilateral issues

Delhi; 27th August 2022: In the recent visit of Tanzanian Minister of Defence and National Service Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax to India, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held bilateral talks with his counterpart on various key issues. The officials discussed various issues concerning bilateral, regional and defence industrial cooperation during the meeting. The two Ministers reviewed the existing military-to-military activities and discussed ways to enhance cooperation in all domains with a focus on defence industry cooperation. The defence ministers of both the nation agreed to the formation of a Task Force to prepare a Five Year Future Road map for enhancing defence cooperation between both the countries and to hold the next Joint Defence Cooperation meeting in Tanzania at an early date. The Raksha Mantri also invited his Tanzanian counterpart to the India-Africa Defence Dialogue and DefExpo which is scheduled to be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat between 18-22 October, 2022. The Tanzanian Minister of Defence and National Service visited the National War Memorial and paid homage to the fallen heroes by laying wreath at the monument. Dr Tax would be visiting Wargaming Development Centre and Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region before departing for Hyderabad for interaction with the Indian Defence Industries.

AAI and Swedan based LFV Air Navigation Services Signs MoU to explore smart aviation solutions

New Delhi, 26th August 2022: Airports Authority of India and LFV Air Navigation Services of Sweden (LUFTFARTSVERKET) signs an MoU to jointly explore smart aviation solutions for the Indian airports. The two air navigation service providers, India and Sweden has demonstrated capabilities in building and operationalizing the next generation of sustainable aviation technology. This MoU shall pave the way for bi-lateral exchange of aviation expertise and technology between the two countries. It will allow the Indian companies to accelerate growth while leveraging Swedish innovation and expertise. Under the aegis of the MoU, the companies can collaborate in areas of mutual interest The MoU was signed by M. Suresh, Member (Air Navigation Services), AAI and Magnus Corell, Deputy Director General, LFV Sweden in the presence of The event was attended by Shri Sanjeev Kumar, Chairman, AAI; Ms. MalinCederfeldtÖstberg, State Secretary, Ministry of Infrastructure, Government of Sweden, H.E. Klas Molin, the Ambassador of Sweden to India and H.E. Tanmaya Lal, the Ambassador of India to Sweden. The event was attended by senior officials from AAI, LFV, Embassy of Sweden, New Delhi, and Business Sweden –The Swedish Trade & Invest council. Acknowledging the pressing need for rapid development concerning next-generation smart airports and the necessity to build sustainable transport systems, both parties consented to the following elements of the MoU: • Exchange of aviation knowledge and technical transfer program • Promote close and friendly relations between the two agencies • Aim to expand technical cooperation in airports • Support the development of a safe, secure, sustainable, and efficient aviation sector • Positive contributions in promoting bilateral and international trade Sanjeev Kumar, Chairman, Airports Authority of India, congratulated the Govt of India and the Govt of Sweden for taking this initiative of a collaborative effort towards strengthening India’s efforts for the development of an efficient, safe, secure and sustainable aviation sector. He expressed confidence that the mutual exchange in civil aviation between AAI and LFV Sweden will go a long way in building and operationalization of next generation of smart and sustainable aviation technology. Klas Molin, Ambassador of Sweden to India, talked about the long-standing collaboration between India and Sweden. “We are looking forward to this addition to the already expansive India-Sweden collaboration, which already include sustainability, health, innovation, energy, and will now extend to civil aviation. I’m looking forward to seeing how the MoU can foster more opportunities for Sweden and India to explore climate-smart solutions within the aviation sector.” While delivering his address, Tanmaya Lal, Ambassador of India to Sweden mentioned that “India Sweden partnership is on the upswing. This MoU covers one more new ground and will facilitate technology collaborations to improve safety, sustainability and efficiency in the aviation sector. This is an important development also in the context of the booming regional air connectivity in India.” Cooperation areas and plan of activity AAI and LFV, both Government agencies of India and Sweden respectively, will jointly collaborate on the following co-operation areas: 1. Air Traffic Management 2. Air Traffic Control 3. Remote Airport Management and Traffic Control 4. Airspace Design and Planning 5. Airport Design and Infrastructure 6. Digitalized Airport and Aviation 7. Capability and Training 8. Sustainable Airports and Aviation 9. Processes for pilots 10. Processes for scale-up A Joint Working Group shall be organized to prioritize interest areas and drive collaboration between the two countries. This MoU will play a crucial role in furthering government-to-government engagements between India and Sweden in the Aviation sector in addition to other existing engagements such as sustainability, healthcare, innovation, energy, and infrastructure etc.

DRDO & Indian Navy successfully flight-test Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile off Odisha coast

Delhi, 23rd August 2022: Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy successfully flight tested Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha on August 23, 2022. The flight test was carried out from an Indian Naval Ship against a high-speed unmanned aerial target for demonstration of vertical launch capability. The missiles, equipped with indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker, intercepted the target with high accuracy. The VL-SRSAM system has been indigenously designed and developed by DRDO. During the test launch, flight path and vehicle performance parameters were monitored using flight data, captured by various Range instruments such as Radar, Electro-optical tracking system (EOTS) and Telemetry systems deployed by ITR, Chandipur. The launch was monitored by senior scientists from various DRDO labs involved in the design and development of the system such as Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad and R&D Engineers, Pune. Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has complimented DRDO, Indian Navy and associated teams on the successful flight trial of VL-SRSAM and stated that the missile will prove to be a force multiplier for the Indian Navy. Secretary Department of Defence R&D & Chairman DRDO congratulated the teams involved in the successful flight test and said that the trial has proved the effectiveness of the weapon system. He added that it will further strengthen the Indian Navy for neutralising various aerial threats at close ranges including sea-skimming targets.

Raksha Mantri meets Uzbek, Kazakh and Belarusian counterparts on his three day visit

Tashkent, 23rd August 2022: Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh on his three-day visit to Tashkent, Uzbekistan held bilateral meetings with his Uzbek counterpart Lieutenant General Bakhodir Kurbanov; Defence Minister of Kazakhstan Colonel General Zhaksylykov Ruslan Zhakslykov and Belarusian Defence Minister Lieutenant General Viktor Khrenin. The entire spectrum of defence cooperation with the three countries was reviewed during the meetings, with focus on identifying avenues to expand mutually beneficial collaboration. Issues of mutual interest were also discussed. The Raksha Mantri will attend the Annual Meeting of the Defence Ministers’ of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Member States. Defence cooperation issues among the SCO Member States will be discussed during the meeting. A joint communiqué is expected to be issued after the deliberations. During the stay in Tashkent, Rajnath Singh will pay homage at the monument of late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and meet Indian Diaspora in Uzbekistan.

Indian aviation is in the growth stage as it approaches maturity says Jyotiraditya M. Scindia

New Delhi, 23 August, 2022: “Interactive forums like these helps the government in more effectively playing its role as a facilitator. Now, is the time to plant the full eco-system of civil aviation firmly in the ground. Growth opportunities for airlines are tremendous as passenger volume will double from 200 million currently to 400 million over the next 7 to 10 years”, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister for Civil Aviation & Steel at an ASSOCHAM Event on CEOs’ Roundtable discussion. “Aviation competing closely with the railways in the air-conditioned segment. The railways today carries 125 million passengers in 1st and 2nd AC, airlines on the other hand carried 144 million domestic travelers before the pandemic and in the next 5 to 10 years, civil aviation will carry the bulwark of transportation for this limited section. Railways is growing at 5.6% CAGR while civil aviation is growing at 10.3% CAGR.” the Union Minister said. “From a fleet size of roughly 400 aircrafts in 2013-2014, it has grown to about 700 aircrafts now and we are adding a delta of almost 15% per annum, which means fleet size will grow to 1200 in the next 5 years. We had just 74 airports in 2013-2014, we have added 67 airports in the past 8 years alone. Much of the growth in the future is going to come from the regional airports, the growth rate in metro airports is about 7.8% in 2010-2015 and has remained in that vicinity. Growth in non-metro airports has jumped from 10.8% in 2010-2015 to 31% at present. The government is continuously working to put in place new policies and removing impediments to enable faster growth of the industry.” he added. Speaking in the interactive session, Mr Ajay Singh, Senior VP ASSOCHAM & CMD Spicejet said, “The government and Civil Aviation minister has been very proactive in engaging with the sector, they have given us their time and have been aggressively espousing the requirements of the sector. We have been talking about this whole concept of taxes on fuel for the longest time and it is Mr. Scindia who has reached out to the states and got many of them to reduce the VAT on fuel from 25-30% to 0-5%. The success of the Regional Connectivity Scheme, success of the Air India divestment too can be attributed to the minister”. Mr Deepak Sood, Secretary General ASSOCHAM delivering his welcome speech said, “This platform is crucial for the aviation sector as an enabler of growth and aviation will play a significant role in the development of India as a nation. The sector is hit hard by the pandemic and is currently under stress, but it has shown resilience and has regained the growth trajectory.” Industry leaders attending the roundtable engaged the Union Minister in a series of interaction sessions where pertinent topics like ‘International Aviation, Hubs & Super Connectors’, ‘Regional Connectivity’ and ‘Skill Development’ were deliberated upon. A compilation of industry recommendations which includes inputs from various stakeholders was also submitted to the minister for his consideration. Ms. Ashmita Sethi President and Country Head, Pratt and Whitney said, “There still is a huge untapped potential in regional connectivity. Understanding the nuances of regional aircrafts and regional jets is the first and foremost step in understanding how we can support this geography and the government plays a vital role in this by including key societal mission into regional connectivity”. The CEO’s roundtable brought together key industry leaders from the aviation sector such as Mr William Campbel CEO Air India, Mr. Sanjiv Edward, CCO and EVP, Delhi International Airport Ltd, Mr. Rajiv Kumar Jain, CEO, Adani Airports Holdings, Ms. Ragini Chopra, EVP Corporate Affairs, Interglobe Enterprises, Mr. Ashok Gopinath, CEO, GMR Aero Technic, Mr. Alok Anand, Chairman and CEO, Acumen Aviation, Mr. Murali Ramachandran, CEO India, Celebi Aviation, Mr. R. SriLankan Airlines Airlifts Indian Medical Donations to SriLanka for Free

20th August 2022, Colombo: SriLankan Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SriLankan Airlines, takes on the cause of airlifting essential medicines gifted by Indian donors to hospitals in SriLanka, free of freight charges. SriLankan Cares has teamed with SriLankan Cargo to implement the long-term humanitarian project which aims to channel medical product donations from India and other countries to hospitals in Sri Lanka that are struggling to cope with the ongoing drug shortage in the country. The project is also representative of the SriLankan national carrier’s enduring commitment to espouse national causes in the country’s hour of need. Consequently, SriLankan Cares has already airlifted consignments of life-saving medicines weighing up to 3,000 kilograms that have been generously donated by organizations and individuals hailing from Bangalore; Chennai; Delhi; and Mumbai in India. The medical supplies were flown free of freight charges on SriLankan Airlines and distributed to medical establishments across Sri Lanka. SriLankan Cares organized the logistics of the consignments from the various cities of origin by obtaining necessary documents, approvals and bookings that help fast-track the process with the support of SriLankan Cargo. With more donations expected, SriLankan Cares will continue to deliver consignments of donated medicine and medical equipment from India and the rest of the world in the months ahead. Time and again, SriLankan Cares has risen to the occasion to aid those in need, especially children. The healthcare sector in Sri Lanka is currently facing its most acute medicine shortage in the history of the country, putting at peril the very lives of those who depend on its services.SriLankan Cares’ compassionate move to bring vital medication to the sick and vulnerable is therefore an opportune and life-saving intervention.

The current edition of Aviation World has covered many areas of Aerospace & Defence based on the latest development in the sector. The front cover highlights three different images, first for the Union Civil Aviation Minister ….. who is leading from the front to steer Indian Civil Aviation sector to witness one of the most interesting phases. He is also facing most tumultuous timing due to the ongoing financial stress in the Aviation sector due to ATF rising cost and long airspace restrictions resulting in mounting losses for Indian carriers. Despite of all the ground level challenges,the minister is addressing new things on regular basis which keeps the sector motivated. We have featured many such developmental works in this edition done under his guidance which will be interesting to read.

Our lead story on “ The West War” is another important feature which covers the ground level reality of the challenges faced by the Aviation sector. Its though time ahead and we believe it will pass soon .
