ACC Aviation Highlights Strong Second Quarter

21 July, 2021: ACC Aviation, the global aviation services group, reports positive growth in the second quarter of 2021, driven by US and UK Charter as well as steady growth in its consulting division. Charter volume in the US and UK was up 39% year on year. Highlights included an uptick in the use of corporate shuttles, across the USA, Europe, and Asia, from the manufacturing, transport and sports sectors. ACC Aviation has supported a number of corporations with regular programme flying. US domestic business travel continues to lead the recovery with encouraging booking levels through 2021 into early 2022. ACC Aviation’s consultancy arm fared well in Q2, with 1H revenues up 18% compared with the same period in 2020, and 33% up on 2019. With increased activity across aircraft disposal and acquisition, and sale-and-leaseback projects, the business is backing further expansion of its consulting division with its entry to Aviation Finance Advisory. ACC Aviation has appointed Viktor Berta as VP of Aviation Finance Advisory where he will be supporting new and existing clients in analysing financing and leasing arrangements, restructuring existing indebtedness, and sourcing new forms of financing. “The creation this month (July) of a dedicated Aviation Finance Advisory within ACC Aviation, led by Viktor Berta, ex Erste and DVB Bank, leaves us even better placed to support airlines, lessors, lenders and investors with their existing debt and financing options as they navigate through this uncertain climate,” commented ACC Aviation CEO Phil Mathews. Trading highlights for Q2: • Appointed by Congo Airways, the national carrier of Congo DRC, to arrange the financing of its orderbook for 4x Embraer E190/E195-E2 aircraft, including on sale and leaseback. • Arranged and advised on the acquisition one B737-300 for an undisclosed client in the CIS region. • Arranged and advised on the pre-purchase inspection of one B737-300 stored in Estonia. Consulting activities included: • Ongoing engagement by a state-backed financier to develop a business plan for a new regional airline in West Africa • Completion of several aircraft appraisals including a Dassault Falcon 50EX and an Airbus Helicopters EC130 T2 • Completion of a feasibility assessment for the launch of a new Middle East based helicopter touring business. • Completion of a feasibility assessment for an aircraft teardown and dismantling facility in North Africa. ACC summarises The ACC Aviation portfolio of services continues to evolve and will be further extended into Q3 and Q4 enabling the business to offer wider expertise to clients. This past quarter’s activity has exemplified the reach and breadth of its activity. The group has also grown its team in the US with multi-lingual team members helping to expand ACC Aviation’s footprint across Central and South America The market is improving, driven by US corporate travel, buoyed too by encouraging levels of ad hoc leisure charter to destinations like Mexico and the Caribbean, emphasising the pent-up demand for leisure travel. Charter opportunities will benefit hugely when the corridor finally opens between the USA and Europe, says Director of Charter Richard Smith. The UK has been challenging, but there are still many opportunities for specialist sector travel, he notes. ACC Aviation’s Consultancy arm sees an increased volume of aircraft transactions and financial restructuring, driven by the initial stages of market recovery. “Airlines who take this opportunity to restructure their indebtedness will be in a much better position post-recovery than those who have not, with the leasing/lending community starting to limit airlines’ prospects of renegotiation now that the market is starting to recover,” said Rob Watts, ACC Aviation Director of Consulting.

World’s Top Airline Brands Lose Over $35 Billion in Brand Value

The total value of the world’s top 50 most valuable airline brands has declined by a third, decreasing from US$108.6 billion in 2020 to US$72.9 billion in 2021. The airline sector is one of the most severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with international travel at a near complete standstill since the beginning of 2020. With airlines forced to ground a significant amount of their fleets and cut flights down to worryingly low numbers, brands are grappling with depleting cash reserves and a dependence on government or state support. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has forecast that the industry will not make a full recovery to pre-pandemic levels until 2023 or 2024. According to Brand Finance’s analysis, low-cost airlines are predicted to make a quicker recovery than their full-service counterparts. Both, however, will be relying upon the continued speedy and successful rollout of vaccinations globally, as well as the effective control of new variants emerging. Business travel is expected to stagnate, while leisure travel is likely to be the main driver behind recovery across the industry. Savio D’Souza, Valuation Director, Brand Finance: “As predicted, airline brands have had a turbulent ride since the outbreak of the pandemic, with brand values plummeting across the board. With recovery closely tied to vaccination rates, we will likely witness short-haul flights and airline carriers rebound quicker compared to long-haul. Airlines that successfully manage to fly through the economic storm of the pandemic and protect their brands, are likely to be more resilient and perform better as we return to normality.” No movement in top three American airline brands, Delta, American Airlines, and United Airlines have retained the top three spots in the Brand Finance Airlines 50 2021 ranking. With all three brands exposed to the same business conditions throughout the pandemic in the US, their respective brand values have taken a similar hit, losing between 38% and 40%. Domestic travel in the US has already begun to steadily recover and over the summer months is expected to strengthen further, therefore brand values in the coming year should improve as a result. The sector’s most valuable brand, Delta (brand value US$5.8 billion) has ensured that employees and customers have remained the top priority throughout the pandemic and has been recognised as a leading brand for customer service, communications, and flexibility – the latter of which is vital in the uncertain COVID environment. Three new entrants There are three new entrants into the ranking this year: Saudia (brand value US$506 million) in 39th; Jetstar (brand value US$360 million) in 49th; and Avianca (brand value US$356 million) in 50th. Highest new entrant, Saudia, has weathered the COVID-induced storm by redirecting its resources to its strong domestic market. Saudi Arabia has recently revealed its vision for the kingdom to be a tourism and logistics hub with over 100 million tourists by 2030, increasing the number of destinations to 250 and doubling air cargo capacity. Saudia plans to significantly increase its fleet size to capture this growth in the market. This expected domestic growth and ambitions of the Vision 2030 make the Saudia brand as one to watch as it builds its international brand strength and value. Flag carriers build trust and reputation, but can they translate it to a commercial advantage? In addition to measuring overall brand value, Brand Finance also determines the relative strength of brands through a balanced scorecard of metrics evaluating marketing investment, stakeholder equity, and business performance. Across the ranking, flag carriers on average receive both higher global and domestic Brand Strength Index (BSI) scores. In Brand Finance’s latest Global Brand Equity Monitor, flag carriers outperform non-flag carriers on two key metrics of recommendation by 16 points and reputation by 12 points. Flag carriers, in general, have benefitted from greater state support than their non-flag carrier counterparts. This has taken place in direct financial support, as well as through indirect support through furlough schemes, jobs, or tax deferrals. They have also kept flying during the pandemic on vital routes while lower-cost peers have been forced to shut routes. This has helped bolster trust and reputation of flag carrier brands. Aeroflot flies high as sector’s strongest According to Brand Finance’s Brand Strength Index, Aeroflot (down 38% to US$1.0 billion) is once again the world’s strongest airline brand, with a BSI score of 89.5 out of 100 and a corresponding AAA brand strength rating. Aeroflot has recently undertaken a shift in strategy towards becoming a more premium class travel option. As many other major airlines are being forced to make cuts in capital expenditure and suspend aircraft deliveries, Aeroflot is awaiting new generation aircrafts to gradually replace its older fleet. As one of the oldest airlines in the world, Russia’s national flag carrier has clearly demonstrated that despite reduced air travel it continues to have a strong presence in consumers’ mind, with its reputation improving from 84.0 to 90.0 out of 100 this year, according to Brand Finance’s Global Brand Equity Monitor. Savio D’Souza, Valuation Director, Brand Finance: “Once again, Aeroflot has been named the world’s strongest airline brand. The airline’s strong and vast heritage, paired with its constant strive to innovate and improve its strategy, stand it in good stead to put itself in a solid position in the global airlines market once international travel restrictions ease.” (AIRLINES 50 2021. Future of Aerodynamics Design through Virtual Validation

AW Online Feature By Nagabushan TN,Aerospace Practice Manager, Detroit Engineered Product(DEP) Globally OEMs are increasingly employing virtual technology for validating performance, which is now common for structural performances, as well as aerodynamics. Virtual Wind Tunnel is a solution to perform wind tunnel simulations of Aircraft structure in an efficient manner, wherein transient and steady state studies can be performed with speed and accuracy. Implementing virtual validation methods have become more common for design exploration and trade off studies across industry sectors including aerospace, automotive, heavy industries, etc. Faster HPC platforms have given engineers a chance to simulate and optimize designs faster than ever before. The story is no different for aerodynamics studies. Robustness, flexibility and automation are key aspects for grid generation to modeling complex flow physics. Engineers can now analyze the flow not just over fuselage and wings, but also around the nacelles and air intakes. The virtual validation for aerodynamics is extending beyond commercial air carriers to cargo aircrafts and surveillance drones. Fifth Generation Technology Aerodynamics and virtual validation are also important for fighter aircrafts as the trend towards fifth generation technology is picking pace. Stealth features, surfaces for reducing Frontal Radar Cross Section (RCS) requirement, design of complex air intakes for the fifth generation, would be some of the areas where virtual validation for aerodynamics would provide great insight to designers. The ability to study the effect of separation between the fuselage and engine air intake zone is readily possible using virtual validation. Additionally, with parametric CFD models we can even study its impact on performance. The next generation fighters are increasing their role play, so quick maneuvers are as important as high speed maneuvers. This opens up additional areas where designers can leverage the virtual validation for aerodynamics, to realize the merits of subtle changes to the wing design after finalizing the configuration. In fighter aircrafts, often there are upgrades for naval application from the generic air force version. Changes to the naval version might require heavier underbelly, changes to the front cone area, etchas to align with the requirements. In these cases, virtual validation for aerodynamics does help the designers to check and gain insight for their designs before they commit the design for release. Many a times it is even harder to build test facilities to examine the demonstrators, but simulations are the best way to represent the scenario and gain insight into the performance. The power of virtual validation for aerodynamics during these conditions is really useful. Future Objectives As we piece together the future we see convergence towards zero emission flights, alternate propulsion options including hybridization as major objectives. On the commercial aircraft side, we see the role for virtual validation in aerodynamics grow significantly as engineers try to configure efficient wings with wingtips, smoother nacelle front ends and airframe noise reducers as more efficient structural options. On the defense application front, as the push is more towards multi role, Fifth generation and studies that aim beyond different propulsion options not excluding the scramjets, we can easily assess the usefulness of virtual validation. Also, deciding on the balance of stealth characteristics focused on front-aspect Radar Cross Section (RCS) and aerodynamics, designing the bay for the weaponry are all challenges that rightly lands into the virtual validation arena. Pitching it the advantage designers have to gain insight. The real proof is out once the rubber meets the runway and the machine takes to the sky. Virtual validation for aerodynamics with powerful algorithms running on large hardware to simulate complex flows is a true companion for designers to validate, check and gain insight into what is going on before there is any prototype to take the runway to let loose the test pilot to check out the next generation flying machine.
