Air India Express Launches Virtual Interline Platform with Scoot as First Partner

Delhi, 6th August 2024: Air India Express has launched a Virtual Interline platform, offering flyers a wider range of booking options. Starting their flight search from the airline’s website,users can connect to the new platform, enabling them to book connecting flights where one leg of the journey is operated by Air India Express and the other leg by the partner airline. Developed in collaboration with travel solutions technology company Dohop, the Virtual Interline platform “AIX Connect” enhances the connectivity of Air India Express’s network by enabling travellers to book self-connect itineraries between flights of Air India Express and those of the partner airline. Singapore- based airline, Scoot, joins as the inaugural partner, enabling users to book flights from India and the Middle East to 60 destinations. This partnership introduces a range of new sectors, complementing the Air India Express network of 380 daily flights from 32 domestic and 14 international destinations. Ankur Garg, Chief Commercial Officer, Air India Express, said, “As Air India Express strengthens its footprint across domestic and international markets, we are strategically leveraging virtual interline partnerships to unlock new destinations with seamless connectivity to the East and West. Exclusive Interview highlighting collaboration between Red Hat & IndiGo

IndiGo Airlines is optimizing flight operations, streamlining maintenance processes, and providing personalized services to passengers by leveraging Red Hat’s AI- integrated solutions. This partnership exemplifies how AI can revolutionize traditional industries, making them more agile and responsive to market demands. To brief more about the collaboration and the benefits, Viju Chakarapany, Vice President & Head of Commercial Sales (APAC/JAPAN/Greater China), Red Hat and Neetan Chopra, Chief Digital and Information Officer, IndiGo interacted with Vishal Kashyap, Managing Editor, Aviation World. Here are the excerpts of the discussion: Q: How the collaboration between Red Hat and IndiGo shaped up? Viju Chakarapany: Everything that we looked at, the relationship started about a year ago on the terms of how this would help the business. We spoke about modernizing the application and one of the classic is Skyplus, the application that we have for direct interaction with the customer. How do we make sure that we move it away from legacy technologies into modern technologies, so that changes can be made faster, features can be implemented quickly, scale achieved through the cloud and on-premise whenever required. Because, you don’t know when the scale will come sometimes as some of it is predictable, some of it is not, right?Number of people will come to the site so that the customer experience at the end of the day becomes great. Likewise, opening up the APIs and all that, how will that help the developers, not just within IndiGo to be able to see each other’s APIs and see how we can integrate and make it better and cut off the silos, but also outside, right? Be it a young developer who’s developing something to integrate with IndiGo’s platform. They can do that very easily now, right? How do they do that? So that we can get a lot more open with regards to, you know,Working on newer technologies or newer applications that pretty much uses some of the technology that we have co-created In IndiGo. Automation is extremely exciting because the more you automate, the more time you have to innovate. Q: What is the contribution of Red Hat’s OpenShift and integration solutions to IndiGo’s transformation? Neetan Chopra: There are two-three components of Red Hat that we use. One is to look at application modernization. For example, when you have to modernize your website and app, the digital channels, you need to be able to break them into small components, and then host it within what we call container networks. So, the ability to break up our application into micro services, and run those micro services is one of the components we are using of Red Hat. The other area is once you kind of modernize your app, you need to make sure you are beaming those integration and the API part. So, for this we are using a Red Hat component. Around 160 applications or integration footprints were running on our on-premise application that we had to shift it to the cloud. So, the whole cloud environment, along with Microsoft and Red Hat, that’s another component we are using. From a technology perspective, micro services breaking up into small parts, integration, APIs, and cloud is broadly where we are using reduced software. What is in the works, is this whole, what we call a zero-touch ops or invisible ops, which is the ability to run infrastructure in a software way. So, we are starting to use, one of Red Hat’s programs or kind of products called Ansible Automation Platform. One can now write on Ansible to boot up infrastructure and configure it. So, we are trying to move in that direction as well. Q: What is exactly the role of Open API platform for integration and collaboration? Viju Chakarapany: Open API is extremely important, especially when you don’t want to reinvent the wheel. There are components that have already been done by other players and what not. Let me give you an example, this is nothing to do with IndiGo, right? One of the things that we do in Singapore today is the banks are integrating their login credentials .That’s because they don’t have to reinvent it and do it by themselves. They can just be dependent on someone who’s already done it, who is the authority on making sure that it’s the right person and the right login, and you are getting the right information from that person so that they can do what they need to do in terms of logging them into secure systems, getting an account set up very quickly without needing to ask all this information, because that’s all going to be coming from a so-called third party. So this way of integrating information so that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel is extremely important. That’s why APIs became so big.Everybody was just starting to use, just do components so that you can integrate together with each one of them. I think similarly in Indigo’s case was the same. One is internal focused, whereby you don’t have to reinvent the wheel in terms of understanding what exactly is in there. The information goes in and it comes out. You don’t have to know what’s inside there. That’s pretty much using the API, and that makes it faster for developers, a lot quicker for them to implement their solutions. It also helps external organizations who are trying to collaborate with IndiGo. If you go today and you look at any of the airline’s websites, you’ll see that it’s kind of integrated pretty well. The integration behind happens because they’ve got open APIs, they’re exchanging that. And that’s how this whole logic, how do we make this a lot quicker open up. And that’s the logic behind open APIs, right Neetan Chopra: I think one is from a customer perspective, it’s a bit of a technology which is hidden below the wraps, but what does it deliver? Boeing Board Names Kelly Ortberg President and CEO

ARLINGTON, Va., July 31, 2024: Boeing has announced that its Board of Directors has elected Robert K. “Kelly” Ortberg as the company’s new president and chief executive officer, effective August 8, 2024. Ortberg will also serve on Boeing’s Board of Directors. He will succeed Dave Calhoun, who earlier this year announced his intention to retire from the company, having served as president and CEO since January 2020, and as a member of Boeing’s Board of Directors since 2009. “The Board conducted a thorough and extensive search process over the last several months to select the next CEO of Boeing and Kelly has the right skills and experience to lead Boeing in its next chapter,” said Steven Mollenkopf, Chair of the Board. “Kelly is an experienced leader who is deeply respected in the aerospace industry, with a well-earned reputation for building strong teams and running complex engineering and manufacturing companies. After five years leading Rockwell Collins, he steered the company’s integration with United Technologies and RTX until his retirement from RTX in 2021. He has held a number of important leadership posts in industry, including serving on the Board of Directors of RTX. Additionally, he serves on the Board of Directors of Aptiv PLC, a global technology company and an industry leader in vehicle systems architecture. He is the former Chair of the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) Board of Governors. Ortberg holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Iowa.

Israel Aerospace Industries Appoints Dror Bar as IAI Vice President & CEO of ELTA

Tel Aviv, 31st July 2024: Israel Aerospace Industries, a world-class aerospace and defense leader, has appointed Dror Bar as IAI Vice President and CEO of ELTA. Bar was identified as the most suitable candidate after a long and rigorous search procedure was carried out in accordance with the procedure for appointing a CEO in government-owned companies. ELTA’s board of directors, headed by IAI’s CEO Boaz Levy, has unanimously decided to adopt the recommendation of the search committee, headed by IAI Chairman Amir Peretz, and appointed Dror Bar to serve as IAI’s VP and CEO of ELTA. The appointment is subject to the approval of the Appointments Review Committee, Israel’s Minister of Defense, and the Minister for Regional Cooperation who heads the Government Companies Authority. Prior to those approvals, the appointment will be considered temporary.

One of the key trends is the increase in passenger air traffic, which has surged as global travel restrictions have eased. However, the supply of new aircraft remains a challenge, making it a top priority to enhance current production capacities. To meet environmental goals, there is a growing emphasis on the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to lower emissions and reduce the carbon footprint of air travel. Additionally, the industry is witnessing a rise in the experimentation of alternate propulsion systems, such as electric and hydrogen-powered engines. Numerous startups are collaborating with established companies to design and test these innovative propulsion technologies. A: The aerospace industry, along with its Tier 1 partners, is actively engaged in a range of sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact. One major focus is on alternative fuels. The industry is exploring the use of biofuels, hydrogen, and electricity to significantly cut carbon emissions. These efforts include ongoing research and development to make these fuels viable for commercial aviation. Efficient aircraft design is another critical area. Aerospace companies, including OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, are designing more efficient aircraft with improved aerodynamics, lighter materials, and more efficient engines. An example of this is the A320neo, which showcases collaborative design efforts to create a more fuel-efficient product. The entire industry is also adopting sustainable practices in their operations, such as recycling, waste reduction, and energy conservation, to further minimize their environmental footprint. Additionally, carbon offsetting has become a significant focus, with not only aerospace majors but also airlines taking action. Airlines are increasingly partnering with domestic rail and other transport services to offer seamless end-to-end connectivity with a lower carbon footprint. An example is Lufthansa’s Rail & Fly program with Deutsche Bahn, which provides seamless connectivity between long-haul flights and trains for last-mile travel. These initiatives reflect the industry’s comprehensive approach to sustainability, encompassing innovative technologies, efficient designs, and collaborative efforts to reduce environmental impact. Q: How do you plan to address future challenges and opportunities? A: Given the high growth potential in the aerospace sector, Tata Technologies is strategically preparing to address future challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities through several key initiatives. One of our primary strategies is building scale and capacity to effectively deliver on key accounts. BGS Announces its Partnership with Heston Airlines

31st July 2024: Baltic Ground Services, an international ground handling, aircraft fuel supply, and logistics service provider, has come to an agreement with Heston Airlines to provide them with into-plane fuelling services at their base of operations in Tallinn International Airport. The new contract, which entered into force on 1st May 2024, will last until the end of May 2025. Heston Airlines currently operates Airbus A320 aircraft and provides both short and long-term services worldwide. According to Gintarė Jarulytė, Head of Ground Operations at Heston Airlines, the company has ambitious plans for its future, making it essential to have a reliable partner that provides quality ground services. “At Heston Airlines, we set ourselves to the highest quality standard. Naturally, we expect the same from our partners. We’re glad that BGS shares these values. Their track record in providing services smoothly and efficiently is impeccable. MoD signs MoU to set up testing facilities under UP Defence Industrial Corridor

New Delhi, 31st July 2024: Ministry of Defence (MoD), on July 30, 2024, inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up three state-of-the-art testing facilities under the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC). Under the MoU, one facility will be established in Lucknow in Mechanical & Material (M&M) domain, and two in Kanpur – one each in Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) and Communications domains. The MoU, under the Defence Testing Infrastructure Scheme (DTIS), was exchanged between senior officials of MoD and Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) in New Delhi. The DTIS was launched by Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh in May 2020, with an outlay of Rs 400 crore, to set up state-of-the-art testing facilities in collaboration with private industry and Central/State Government, promoting indigenous defence production, reducing imports and enhancing self-reliance. To provide impetus to the defence and aerospace sectors within the Defence Industrial Corridors, seven testing facilities were approved – four in Tamil Nadu and three in Uttar Pradesh. While the MoU to establish three testing facilities in UPDIC has been signed today, the agreement to set up three facilities under the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor in the domains of UAS, Electronic Warfare and Electro Optics in Chennai was inked on July 02, 2024. The DTIS provides up to 75% government funding as ‘Grant-in-Aid’, with the remaining 25% funded by the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPVs), comprising Indian private entities and State/Central Governments. For the M&M facility, MIDHANI is the lead SPV member, with some private sector companies being the consortium members. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited are the lead SPV members in the UAS and Communications testing facilities respectively. Upon the completion of the project, these facilities will provide advanced testing equipment and services to both government and private entities, with revenue reinvested to enhance testing capabilities & processes, thereby giving a boost to Aatmanirbharta in defence.

Air India Express to start flights to Dhaka from Kolkata and Chennai

Delhi,31st July 2024: Air India Express has announced the expansion of its operations to Dhaka. From 3rd September 2024, the airline will operate six weekly flights each connecting Dhaka to Kolkata and Chennai, enhancing connectivity, and fostering economic growth between India and Bangladesh. Air India Express has also started bookings for the upcoming sector. Commenting on the launch, Aloke Singh, Managing Director, Air India Express, said, “With the introduction of direct flights to Dhaka from Kolkata and Chennai,Air India Express continues to enhance connectivity across the Indian sub-continent. These new routes are a significant step towards providing more convenient travel experiences infused with the warmth of Indian hospitality, further strengthening regional ties, and fostering greater accessibility within the sub-continent. Apart from trade and tourism, these flights will also help guests from Bangladesh travelling for medical treatments at speciality hospitals in Chennai and Kolkata. This collaboration aims to foster innovation and to advance the development of technological solutions that can enable safe and secure drone operations and help the growth of drone-based applications in India. Air Samarkand operates first flights to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Samarkand, Uzbekistan, 30th July 2024: Air Samarkand has operated an inaugural passenger flight from Samarkand to Jeddah, marking a new milestone in the airline’s operations by supporting religious pilgrims. The carrier’s Airbus A321neo aircraft departed from Samarkand today (Tuesday), at 0:05am and arrived in Jeddah at 03:10am local time, carrying 188 passengers to a city renowned for being a gathering point for pilgrims travelling to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Some 119 passengers joined the return leg from Jeddah to Samarkand. A further flight is scheduled for later today, departing Samarkand at 15:00pm and arriving in Jeddah at 18:20pm local time. Hereon, the airline will operate two return flights to Jeddah every Tuesday. Air Samarkand’s CEO, Zafar Butaev, commented: “We are proud to offer our passengers new opportunities for travel and spiritual growth, with new flights that strengthen the ties between Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia. Passengers on the first flight praised the check-in process at the airport, the airline’s service, and the overall flight experience, commending the attentive care of the flight attendants and the halal meals provided. Jeddah, a true gem of the Arab world, is the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia and its ‘economic capital’. Besides being a pilgrimage destination, the city is of considerable interest to tourists, with its Corniche resort area stretching along the Red Sea coast, featuring luxurious hotels, beaches, and shopping centers. The legendary King Fahd Fountain is also located there, while the historic Al-Balad district, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves traditional coral stone buildings. Air Samarkand also plans flights to Medina, starting from Samarkand next month (August 2024) using Airbus A330 aircraft. The flights are operated in partnership with Uzbekistan’s EasyBooking agency. The new services underlines Air Samarkand’s continued development and the steady expansion of its route network. In addition to new flights to Saudi Arabia, the airline operates direct flights to Istanbul, as well as services to Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, and Nha Trang in Vietnam using Airbus A321neo and A330-300 aircraft.
