Maeve and RTX’s Pratt & Whitney Canada to collaborate on design of M80 aircraft

Farnborough,July 24, 2024: Maeve announced that it is collaborating with Pratt & Whitney Canada on the design of its M80 hybrid-electric 80-seater regional aircraft. Pratt & Whitney is an RTX business. “As a clean sheet design, the performance and efficiency of the Maeve M80 will be a game changer for the regional aviation market, combining advanced aerodynamics and a disruptive propulsion technology,” said Martin Nuesseler, Chief Technology Officer, Maeve. “Working together with Pratt & Whitney Canada at this stage of the programme will enable us to validate and optimize the design of the aircraft and hybrid-electric propulsion system, tapping into the full potential of this promising new technology.” The M80 design aims to offer the performance of a jet and the cost efficiency of a turboprop. With a range of up to 1200 NM, the M80 aims to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 40% relative to benchmark regional jets while cruising at comparable speeds and altitudes. Maeve is targeting Entry-In-Service in 2032 following a robust integrated product development plan based on the team’s experience and lessons learned from several aircraft industrial programs. “Reaching the ambitious goals of reducing emissions and making aviation more sustainable will depend on combined efforts to accelerate technology innovation and drive collaboration across our industry,” said Anthony Rossi, vice president, global sales and marketing, Pratt & Whitney Canada. “It’s in this spirit that we will collaborate with Maeve, leveraging our growing expertise in sustainable propulsion technologies, as well as our unrivaled experience powering the regional aviation market for four decades.” The regional aircraft market is forecasted to grow well into the next two decades, in particular driven by the need for larger aircraft passenger capacities in the 70-90 seat range, as well as better environmental performance. Qatar Airways unveils ‘Qsuite Next Gen’ at Farnborough International Airshow 2024

Farnborough,22 July 2024: On the first morning of the Farnborough International Airshow 2024, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, unveiled the new, ultra-modern ‘Qsuite Next Gen’. This latest iteration of the award-winning Qatar Airways Qsuite brings the World’s Best Business Class in commercial aviation to new heights. Team of UK companies completes flight trials for 5G infrastructure from the sky

LEE-ON-THE-SOLENT, UK,July 23 2024: An advanced airborne 5G connectivity system has been successfully integrated to a Britten-Norman Islander aircraft, completing a series of demonstration flights. The groundbreaking technology is being developed by a number of UK companies led by Stratospheric Platforms Limited (SPL), a leading Non-Terrestrial Networks telecoms developer, with design, integration and demonstration flights provided by manufacturer Britten-Norman. SPL is at the forefront of developing airborne antennas to deliver widescale high performance 5G coverage. This technology offers numerous valuable applications, such as quickly restoring networks after major disasters like earthquakes or tsunamis, where traditional mobile network infrastructure has been disrupted. On 18th July 2024, the project team were joined by distinguished guests from potential customers and investors to observe the installation of the array under real flight conditions during an event at Britten-Norman’s Solent Airport aircraft maintenance (MRO) facility. The trial, conducted by Britten-Norman’s Flight Test Organisation, aimed to demonstrate the aircraft’s capability to operate safely with the large 5G phased array antenna installed. Key aspects of the flight test programme included assessment of aircraft performance and handling qualities, covering both normal and emergency operation. This will support full certification of the system, enabling integration in terrestrial telecoms network at connection speeds of up to 200Mbps over 15,000km2. The turboprop BN2T-4S Islander variant was chosen for its robust design, all-weather capability, exceptional endurance and payload capacity. In addition, the aircraft’s modular design makes it an ideal platform for integration of large mission system payloads, whilst retaining a rapid re-role capability for other taskings. The next phase of the project involves demonstrating the technology via a connection to a private UK-based national 5G telecommunications network. This innovative project represents a significant leap forward in airborne telecommunications, bringing reliable, high-speed 5G connectivity from the sky one step closer to fruition. It’s always satisfying to deliver a safe and effective flight test programme, but the huge potential of SPL’s system and the collaborative nature of the team made this one particularly exciting. The large and complex nature of the system places significant demands on the host aircraft. However, the BN2T-4S performed admirably; the combination of payload capacity, endurance, climb performance, twin engine reliability, robustness and electrical power generation makes it unbeatable for this mission.”

CAE announces Elle Betchley as Women in Flight Ambassador 2024

Farnborough,July 23, 2024: CAE has announced the Elle Betchley as the fifteenth CAE Women in Flight Ambassador. She joins a growing movement and network of female pilot professionals in raising awareness of the possibilities for women in the aviation sector. CAE launched the CAE Women in Flight program in 2018 to encourage women to pursue a career in aviation. It has quickly evolved to become the CAE Women in Flight Ambassador Program which aims to encourage girls and women to dream big and have no limits, raising awareness of the opportunities for women to follow professional pilot careers. Elle is currently participating in the CAE Generation easyJet Pilot Training Program designed by CAE exclusively for easyJet. The competency-based program includes aircraft-type-specific training on CAE’s Airbus A320 Flight Training Devices (FTD) and Full Flight Simulators (FFS) and is subsequently complemented by base and line training with easyJet. Upon successfully completing the program, Elle will join the airline as a co-pilot on the Airbus A320. CAE will train up to 200 easyJet pilots annually through 2028. As a CAE Women in Flight Ambassador, Elle receives a full scholarship worth more than €100,000 to complete her training. Elle has just completed her ground training at CAE’s London Gatwick training centre and is about to start her foundation flight training in tandem with her CAE Women in Flight Ambassador role. As an ambassador, her responsibilities include encouraging women to pursue an aviation career. The program aims to achieve much more than supporting future female pilots. It is also focused on developing a network of like-minded ambassadors and professionals who illustrate that diversity in aviation should be the norm, not the exception. “We have established a reputation for delivering the highest standards of pilot training, and we recognize that it is our responsibility as an industry leader to support the advancement of women in aviation and broaden the civil aviation talent pool,” explains Marie-Christine Cloutier, CAE’s Vice-President, Performance, Strategy, and Marketing. “Women make up only between four and six percent of professional pilots worldwide*, and as CAE’s 2023 aviation talent forecast shows that some 300,000 new pilots are needed by 2032, we want to help attract more women to join the profession. Through shining role models like Elle, we believe we can truly influence the next generation.” Initially trained as an agronomist, Elle has pursued a career in agriculture for the last seven years. She has always admired pilots but never considered herself a candidate. Her inspiration came from her husband, who also took the CAE Generation easyJet Pilot Training Program, but Elle wants to do so much more than fly. “I wanted to become a CAE Women in Flight Ambassador from the day I applied for the pilot training at CAE. This is not just about inspiring women; it’s about changing how people think. Being a CAE Women in Flight Ambassador will allow me to show young women what is achievable and shape the future of the aviation industry’s workforce,” says Elle. Selection of the Women in Flight Ambassador is a rigorous process that requires multi-layered applications, written tests, video interviews, with input from Women in Aviation International, and the airline. Safran selected by Boeing for X-66 NASA Sustainable Flight Demonstrator

Farnborough, July 23, 2024: Safran Electrical & Power has been selected by Boeing to provide the electrical power generation system for the X-66 flight demonstrator, part of NASA’s Sustainable Flight Demonstrator project. Safran Electrical & Power will also support ground and flight tests, slated to start in 2028. The Sustainable Flight Demonstrator is part of NASA’s broader Sustainable Flight National Partnership, which is dedicated to developing the technologies needed to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions for commercial aviation. Boeing’s X-66 program is focused on developing the Transonic Truss-Braced Wing (TTBW) concept, which could enable significant improvements in fuel efficiency and reduced emissions for future single-aisle aircraft. This electrical power generation system consists of a variable frequency generator and its associated control unit, integrating the most advanced technologies developed by Safran Electrical & Power. It has been adapted to integrate directly on the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine and provides more than 100kW of electrical power. This modern system features an unmatched weight and efficiency, and enables a reduction in hydro-mechanical losses of close to 50%, resulting in significant fuel burn and carbon emission savings. “We are very honored to further expand our thriving partnership with Boeing under this NASA program, and to develop breakthrough technologies for the Sustainable Flight Demonstrator. Pegasus Air Services Purchases new DHC-6 400 Series Twin Otter aircraft

Currently operating with three DHC 6-400 aircraft, Pegasus Air Services offers chartering services, private aviation, aircraft management services, aviation consultancy, and fixed base operations to a diverse customer base. “We are excited to add another DHC-6 Twin Otter to support our expanding business,” said Dinul Ichsan Avis, Director – PT Pegasus Air Services. “The Twin Otter is an exceptional aircraft, and the customer service from De Havilland Canada has been top-notch. American Airlines Orders 180 CF34 Engines to Power New Embraer 175 Fleet

Farnborough,July 23, 2024: GE Aerospace has announced that American Airlines has finalized an order for 180 CF34-8E engines plus spares to power its fleet of 90 new Embraer 175 regional jets. “The CF34 engine has a long track record of success with American Airlines and we’re grateful the American team is putting its trust in us again,” said Russell Stokes, President and CEO, Commercial Engines and Services, GE Aerospace. “This order, along with the CFM deals announced this spring with American, highlight our continued success at providing our customers industry-leading products and services.” More than 7,500 CF34 engines are in service with more than 900 Regional and Business Jet operators globally. The CF34-8E has accumulated more than 40 million flight hours and 29 million cycles since entering service on the Embraer E170/175 in 2004. Today, the CF34 engine line, which includes -3, -8, and -10 models, powers more than 2,500 regional commercial aircraft. “The reliability and performance of the CF34 engine has been critical to our success for many years,” said American’s CFO Devon May. “We look forward to continuing our strong partnership with GE Aerospace as we invest in modernizing and strengthening our domestic and regional fleet.” GE Aerospace has delivered nearly 11,000 CF34 engines and the line has a track record for outstanding reliability and durability, with a dispatch reliability rate of 99.97% (12-month rolling). All CF34 engines (like all GE Aerospace engines) can operate on approved SAF fuel blends today.

Saudia Group Signs Largest Global Agreement With Lilium to Acquire Up to 100 eVTOL Jets

Munich, Germany, July 19, 2024: Saudia Group and Lilium N.V., electric aircraft manufacturer and Regional Air Mobility (RAM), today signed a binding sales agreement for 50 Lilium Jets, with options for the purchase of 50 more. The signature ceremony was held at Lilium’s HQ in Munich. The contract was signed by Fahd Al-Jarbou, CEO of Saudia Private, representing Saudia Group, and Lilium’s CEO Klaus Roewe, in the presence of several distinguished guests including H.E. Engr. Ibrahim Al-Omar, Director General of Saudia Group, Michael Kindsgrab, the German Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Lilium Chairman Tom Enders.This sales agreement, which follows the Memorandum of Understanding between Saudia Group and Lilium signed in October 2022, marks the largest of its kind in the MENA region and represents an important industry milestone as the largest reported firm order of eVTOL aircraft by an airline that plans to operate the aircraft. It signals a substantial commitment to electric aviation from a world-leading operator, as well as a clear preference towards the superior performance, economics, and passenger experience expected to be provided by the Lilium Jet.The agreement includes a schedule of deposit and pre-delivery payments, timeline of future deliveries, guarantees on aircraft performance, and provisions on spare parts, maintenance, and repairs. These jets will support Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages, offer faster access to key sports and entertainment events in Riyadh, and unlock new possibilities for exploring hard-to-reach tourist destinations across the Kingdom. Additionally, business travelers attending conferences and events will benefit from improved access and swift transportation. The eVTOL jets are anticipated to increase flight frequencies and decrease traffic congestion, providing a fast and convenient alternative for reaching various destinations within the Kingdom. Saudia Group expects to receive the first jets in 2026, for which operations will be managed and run by Saudia Private, a subsidiary of Saudia Group.
