The IATA offers and orders vision for airline retailing is becoming reality. PSS’s long goodbye has begun!

By Andy Kidd Airlines are already retailers. They want to be better, nimbler, more agile retailers. But they’ve got a problem in the form of the passenger service system (PSS), whose decades-old passenger-record and business-process models, while pioneering in their day, no longer keep pace in a digital world. Yet PSS continues to underpin airline reservation management. That’s a problem. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has been working on this problem for two decades now and has launched initiatives to address it over the years. Two current ones are noteworthy, with major airlines running pilots and issuing RFPs to build systems incorporating IATA standards and approaches to moving beyond PSS. The two key initiatives are New Distribution Capability (NDC) and ONE Order. NDC focuses on offer management. It’s about picking the right product at the right price to improve customer experience and boosting the likelihood of purchase, whether through Expedia and its ilk, credit card companies, or local tour, travel, and lodging providers. ONE Order then takes offers and turns them into orders, then orchestrates the service delivery and the settling of funds. Enter Offers and Orders Recently, IATA has combined NDC and ONE Order under the banner of what it calls “Offers and Orders.” That makes a lot of sense. Airlines have been able to expand their offerings using NDC for offer management and then use their old PSS systems for handling the reservation management. But PSS systems, designed in a much simpler, more stovepiped travel-and-retail era, struggle to reflect today’s airline-business complexity, much less provide a platform flexible enough to cultivate future business-model innovation. The nature of the market is part of that. You have hundreds of airlines that compete as well as form global alliances and a dizzying array of itinerary options, potential add-ons, ancillary services, product offerings, and so forth. What amounts to a global mesh of potential providers benefits consumers, but the underlying complexity is staggering. It’s understandable that PSS systems have been stretched to their limits. The question is no longer whether the transition from PSS to enable a modern offers-and-orders model is the right thing to do. Now it’s about how to actually do it. The ONE Order/order management side of the equation is the bigger challenge. It’s easier to sell something than to manage the delivery, accounting, and settlement that happens after a sale in a global mesh of providers – even more so when a storm rolls in and flights start getting cancelled.My thoughts as far as conceptual approach can be simply put – and they can also fill a 24-page white paper(“Mapping Your Journey to ONE Order: A Practical Guide for Airline Leaders”). Let’s stick with “simply put.” A long transition ahead Simply put, there’s no one answer as to how airlines should implement ONE Order. The “right” approach will depend on an airline’s systems, its business aims, and its appetite for risk. Unequivocal is that the transition from PSS to approaches that can achieve the Offers and Orders vision must also be able to exchange data and otherwise cooperate with legacy PSS systems for what will be a years-long transition period. That realization drove a major European airline to work with SAP and IATA on a proof-of-concept project that simulated a partner airline running an Offers and Orders system that then interfaced with the airline’s PSS. We showed that the two could inter operate and sell each other’s flights while maintaining full business-process integrity. Others are also doing more than just talking about the transition from PSS. A dozen major carriers have signed on to IATA’s Airline Retail Consortium. These players have committed to spearheading IATA’s Modern Airline Retailing program, which is aimed at speeding the move to Offers and Orders. They are backing a variety of pilot projects, and we are starting to see RFPs for systems that move them toward Offers and Orders. It will take time, and, as Neil Geurin, an American Airlines managing director, told the IATA with considerable understatement, “Completing the transition to 100% Offers and Orders will not be an easy task.” But airlines recognize that, if they want to provide dynamically tailored offerings to customers efficiently and confidently, order management can no longer be straitjacketed by PSS systems designed for an era long gone. Controlled Flight Into Terrain – An Analysis

Feature In aviation, a Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) is an accident in which an airworthy aircraft, fully under pilot’s control, is unintentionally flown into the ground, a mountain, a body of water or an obstacle. In a typical CFIT scenario, the crew is unaware of the impending disaster until it is too late. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), 17% of all General Aviation fatalities are as a result of CFIT accidents. As per FAA in 2015, 384 people died in 238 general aviation accidents and CFIT was the second leading cause. The key cause of CFIT accidents is loss of situational awareness. CFIT: Facts Check a) CFIT accidents are not limited to inexperienced pilots. Well experienced pilots are just as likely to be involved in CFIT accidents. b) CFIT accidents are not more frequently at night. Nearly 75% of CFIT accidents occur during day time hours. c) CFIT accidents occur more frequently during single pilot operations but can also occur during crewed flight. d) More than half of CFIT accidents occur during IMC. e) More than two third of all CFIT accidents are the result of altitude error or Vertical Situational Awareness. f) With a properly trained crew in Crew Resource Management (CRM), the second pilot may make the difference between a Safe flight and a CFIT accident. Leading Causes a) Faulty Judgement / Poor Decision Making:- Most CFIT accidents involve faulty judgement and decision making. For example, making the decision to continue flight when weather or other conditions have deteriorated to minimum VFR visibilities or below. b) Low Altitude:- Flight in unfamiliar terrain at low altitudes expose the aircraft to hazards such as power cables and towers. Power lines are difficult to see until they are too close to avoid. Therefore, pre-flight review of maps, charts for indication of towers, power lines and other terrain elevations is essential. c) Procedural Errors During IFR Flight Operations:- Misreading Minimum Descent Altitude (MDA) or beginning approach descent without confirmed glide scope interception. d) Training:- Training of crew and familiarisation with aircraft and the area of operations forms an integral part of avoiding CFIT accidents. e) In Flight Decision Making:- Avoid the attitudes like ‘this is just a local weather phenomenon, will clear in just a few miles or I am instruments rated or I have flown many many times earlier.’ f) Lack of Pre-Flight Planning:- Failing to review aeronautical charts for Minimum Safe Altitude (MSA), obstacles and terrain elevations can result in operating at unsafe low altitudes. In helicopter operations local area maps of half a million scale, study of map contours, ridge lines and weather patterns play a crucial role. How to Avoid CFIT? a) Pilot Attributes:- Two most important pilot attributes are pre-flight preparations and exercising sound judgement (on the cautious side). Even flying in familiar terrain, work out safe get always. For IFR flight, be sure to note the Minimum En route Altitudes for all segments. b) Know your Aircraft:- Knowledge of aircraft performance like realistic maximum rate of climb or making a 180° turn under instrument conditions etc etc. Do not accept ATC procedures or instructions that would put the aircraft and the passengers in a potentially dangerous situation. c) Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS):- TAWS is an onboard system intended to prevent CFIT. It provides the pilot with early aural and visual warning of impending terrain. With proper pre-flight planning, pilot will know where he is in relation to terrain. When the TAWS issues a low altitude alert, the pilot will immediately begin a climb or turn to avoid higher terrain. Some aircraft also use Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) and (EGPWS). The basic TAWS include a Forward-Looking Terrain Avoidance (FLTA) function that looks ahead of the aircraft along and below the aircraft’s lateral and vertical flight path and provide suitable alerts. Pre-flight / In flight Planning Tool Pre-flight / Inflight planning and assessment tools, if applied consistently will reduce the chances of a CFIT. Some tools are illustrated below: – a) Safety Risk Assessment (SRA): – Use of Safety Risk Matrix to assess likely areas of potential dangers. b) Safety Risk Management (SRM):- It is vital to know what a pilot is going into and what capabilities and resources are available to ensure flight is completed safely. c) Aeronautical Decision Making:- Use of PAVE check list for personalised risk assessment before a flight. In this, the pilot divides the risk of flight into four categories:- * P- Pilot in Command:- Pilot must ask ‘Am I ready for the flight in terms of experience, recency, currency, physical and emotional conditions. Pilot should use IMSAFE acronym to asses health condition. IMSAFE stands for Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue and Emotion. * A- Aircraft:- What limitations the aircraft will impose upon the trip. *V- environment:- Weather is a major environmental consideration. Cloud ceiling, winds and visibility keeping terrain in mind must be adequately addressed. * E- External Pressures:- These are influences external to the flight that create a sense of pressure to complete a flight; often at the expense of safety. For example: the general goal completion orientation or desire to impress someone. Probably the two most dangerous words in aviation are ‘watch this’. The use of personal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) is one way to manage external pressures. Conclusion Too frequently, in flight conditions may not be as forecast, requiring the pilots to make on the spot decisions about continuing, diverting, climbing, descending or return to base to fly another day. Be ready and willing to adjust your plan and do not allow ‘get- there – it – is’ to cloud better judgement. Flying in less-than-ideal conditions promote fatigue and fatigue can affect decision making. Identify alternates for landing and wait out bad weather rather than making a bad decision. Jazeera Airways nets KD13.27 Mn in profit till Q3 2023

India,7th December 2023: Jazeera Airways today announced KD13.27 million in Group Net Profit for the first nine months of 2023. Total revenues for the period were up 12.8% to KD158.9 from KD140.8 million in 2022, while Operating Profit was at KD18.08million. Last year, the company’s profit also included a one-time gain of KD1.73 million resulting from the sale and lease-back of engines. The airline continued to lead the market with a 35.78% share, 17%higher than the same period in 2022. Jazeera’s passenger numbers maintained strong growth, increasing by 35.6% to 3.5 million. For the nine-month period, load factor also grew to 79% compared to 76.4% last year. Retail lease revenue at Jazeera Terminal (T5) was 52%higher compared to the previous year, while duty free revenue was KD 4.02 million, an increase of 22%. Marwan Boodai, Chairman, Jazeera Airways highlighted, “For the nine months period of 2023, despite the tough regulatory, geo-political and regional landscape, we carried a record number of passengers, delivered a strong loadfactor, and built an attractive network of destinations that resulted in Jazeera having the biggest market share in our home base of Kuwait. While depressed yields due to over-capacity remain a challenge, we are well placed to leverage our low cost-base to maintain margins and create value for our shareholders.” Third Quarter2023 Review In the third quarter, Jazeera launched direct flights from Kuwait to Islamabad and Tehran, now flying to a total of 64 destinations. As part of its planned expansion, the airline welcomed two additional aircraft to its fleet in the last quarter. Jazeera Airways now operates a fleet of 22 aircraft across its network in the Middle East, Central and South Asia, Africa, and Europe. In line with adopting sustainability practices into its operations, Jazeera in the last quarter, became the first low-cost carrier in the Middle East to switch from plastic to eco-friendly food service ware in-flight. By changing from plastic cutlery to 100% biodegradable spoons, forks, knives and napkins, Jazeera reduces 300 kilograms of plastic on its flights each month. This initiative is part of Jazeera’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. 2023 Outlook The outlook for 2023 continues to remains positive with a consistent demand for travel, Jazeera’s stringent cost control and solid balance sheet. However, overcapacity in the market continues to put yields under pressure which could impact margins.New destinations, aircraft and initiatives continue to be on the airline’s radar as it aims to grow further in countries such as Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the Eastern European region. The airline was recently recognized by several organizations including listings in the first Fortune 500 Arabia compilation for its contributions to the regional business landscape, in the Best Workplaces in Asia 2023 by Great Place to Work and an ICT Leadership Award for actively embracing and pioneering digital transformation in its operations.

More than 130 lakh people have availed of the benefits of UDAN scheme so far – MoCA

New Delhi, 7th Dec 2023: As widely known, Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), MoCA’s initiative for UDAN was launched to provide connectivity to unserved and underserved airports of the country through revival of the existing airstrips and airports. The scheme would be in operation for a period of ten years. Recently, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation Gen. (Dr) V. K. Singh (Retd) highlighted the salient features of the UDAN scheme are as under: i) The Regional Connectivity Scheme – UDAN is designed to enable air operations on underserved / unserved routes connecting regional areas, promote balanced regional growth and make flying affordable for masses. ii) Financial incentives in terms of concessions from Central, State Governments and airport operators are extended to Selected Airline Operators to encourage operations from unserved/underserved airports / heliports / water aerodromes and to keep the air fare affordable. iii) Financial Support to the Selected Airline Operators is in the form of Viability Gap Funding (VGF). State Governments provide 20% share towards VGF for RCS flights pertaining to their states. However, the share of VGF for North-Eastern states and the Union Territories is 10%. iv) Excise Duty at the rate of 1% / 2% is levied on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) drawn by Selected Airline Operators at RCS Airports for RCS Flights for a period of three (3) years from the date of commencement. v) Airlines are required to commit certain number of the seats as RCS seats depending on the type and size of aircraft on RCS flights. vi) Regional Connectivity Fund (RCF) is created by a levy on each departure of flights on aircraft having MTOW (Maximum Take-Off Weight) above 40 Tonnes except for the departure of flights on routes in North East Region, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep Islands. vii) For balanced regional growth, route allocations are spread equitably across five regions in the country viz. North, South, East, West and North East (with a cap of 30% in a given region). viii) RCS-UDAN is a market driven scheme. Interested airlines based on their assessment of demand on particular routes submit proposals at the time of bidding under RCS – UDAN. Tenure of the Scheme: The scheme to be applicable for a period of 10 years, subjected to periodic review. VGF support for the RCS route is available for a period of three years only. Type of aircraft / helicopter: The Scheme allows operation through various type of aircraft including sea planes and helicopters. Eligible operators: A valid Scheduled Operator Permit (SOP) or a Scheduled Commuter Operator (SCO) permit for scheduled air transport service (passenger) issued by the DGCA Rs.4500 Crores have been allocated for development of airports in the country under the Scheme, out of which Rs. 3751 Crores have been utilised since inception of the scheme. VGF amounting to Rs. 3020 crores has been disbursed to the Selected Airline Operators as of 28.11.2023. Out of Rs. 97.88 Crores sanctioned to develop the airports in the state of Tamil Nadu, an expenditure of Rs 94.51 crore has been incurred so far. Under the UDAN Scheme, the Government has set a target to operationalise 1000 UDAN routes during the currency of the scheme and to revive/develop 100 unserved & underserved airports/heliports/water aerodromes in the country by 2024 for operation of UDAN flights. 517 RCS routes have so far commenced operations connecting 76 airports, including 9 Heliports & 2 Water Aerodrome. BEL receives orders worth Rs. 3,915 Crore

Bengaluru, December 6, 2023: Bharat Electronics Limited received an order of Rs 580 Crore from Indian Army for AMC of Radars. This project will have participation of Indian electronics and associated industries, including MSMEs, which are sub-vendors of BEL. The Company has also received additional orders worth Rs 3,335 Crore since the last disclosure on 15th Sept 2023 and the said orders pertain to AMC for AEW&C system (Airborne Early Warning & Control), Uncooled TI sights, Software Defined Radios, SWIR pay load, AMC for IACCS, Passive Night Vision Binoculars etc. All the equipment manufactured by BEL are part of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ program. With the above, cumulatively BEL has received orders worth Rs 18,298 Crore in the current financial year 2023-24.

Air India Deploys First Generative AI Virtual Agent, Powered By Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service

Gurugram,10 November 2023: Air India has become the world’s first airline to have successfully deployed a Generative AI virtual agent, called ‘Maharaja’, powered by Azure OpenAI service. It has successfully answered over half a million customer queries since its pilot launch in March 2023, and it today manages over 6,000 queries a day in four languages. Air India’s Maharaja AI Agent manages an extensive spectrum of customer queries across 1,300 areas related to flight status, baggage allowances, packing restrictions, check-in, frequent flyer awards, airport lounge access, flight changes, refunds and more. To meet the needs of guests around the world, Maharaja speaks four languages: Hindi, English, French, and German. Of the 6,000-plus questions received each day, over 80% are successfully answered in seconds. About 15% of customer queries today require additional assistance, and Maharaja recognises this automatically and orchestrates a seamless handoff to Air India’s contact centre agents. Dr. Satya Ramaswamy, Chief Digital and Technology Officer, Air India, said: “We are dedicated to providing the best possible service and experience to our valued guests across channels. We also want to be very responsive to their changing preferences. Air India has employed a strategy that involves blending of multiple traditional machine learning techniques alongside Generative AI to provide a compelling consumer-grade experience. Air India has also established safeguards to prevent biased or harmful language from infiltrating its conversational AI system. Unlike rule-based or keyword-based chatbots, Generative AI solutions understand the intent and context of a user’s query and generate a natural and coherent reply. This enhances user experience and satisfaction, while reducing the need for human intervention. It also helps to automate repetitive and mundane tasks, such as booking, cancellation, confirmation, etc., and free up bandwidth for human agents to focus on more complex and value-adding interactions. In the coming months, Air India plans to launch a host of sophisticated features, driven by patent-pending technologies. This includes a novel user experience that changes the way customers interact with AI agents with a combination of textual and graphical interactions that can potentially further speed up customer interactions. Some of these innovations have been incubated for more than 2 years. Air India also plans to enhance the current AI agent with data-driven deep-personalisation capabilities that will elevate the technology to that of a reliable personal assistant for all air travel needs. The capabilities of the AI agent will include travel inspiration and effortless booking experiences. Support for more Indian languages is also in the works.

Embraer and the Netherlands Industries for Defence & Security signs MoU

Rotterdam, Netherlands, November 30, 2023: Embraer and the Netherlands Industries for Defence & Security (NIDV) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the 34th NIDV Exhibition for Defense and Security (NEDS 2023). The signing of the MoU represents a key element in the strategic relationship developed between Embraer and the Netherlands, covering ongoing initiatives associated with the C-390 Millennium and A-29 Super Tucano. The MoU between Embraer and NIDV adds to Embraer’s existing partnerships and strategic relationships in the Netherlands while structuring a joint framework aimed at exploring additional opportunities aligned with the priorities of the Netherlands’ Defense Industry Strategy. These may include services and the development of new capabilities within Embraer’s existing projects, further contributing to the development and application of military knowledge, technologies, and industrial capabilities in the country. The parking Sensor functions by offering real-time visual guidance through RGB Occupancy LEDs for every parking space. These LEDs use live colour-changing lights to accurately reflect the occupancy status of each individual parking bay. Furthermore, this technology operates with exceptional accuracy and high reliability in all conditions. CSMIA’s new parking solution promises to streamline every aspect of your parking journey. LED indicators will guide you straight to the available parking spaces at any given time, effectively minimizing stress and uncertainty when it comes to finding an available parking spot. With safety and security remaining a top priority for CSMIA, this cutting-edge technology not only enhances convenience but also places a strong emphasis on security as the sensors capture the license plate information for improved safety. In cases where travellers have experienced difficulty in recalling the location of their parked vehicle, the “Find My Car” option in the parking guidance system is a feature that will effortlessly help locate the vehicle. This can be done by simply entering details such as the license plate number at the nearby kiosk, eliminating the need for taking photographs of the parked vehicle section. Another noteworthy feature is the real-time monitoring system, which offers video clips and images depicting parking occupancy. Parking supervisors will utilize the heat map dashboard for up-to-the-minute insights into the parking area. The sensor enables customized zone parking, which defines distinct parking zones with unique LED colours. This approach, hence, contributes to more efficient parking management. Furthermore, through the provision of occupancy reports and alarms through scheduled events, the parking management team gains complete oversight and control over the parking facility. This enables them to respond efficiently to any necessary actions. CSMIA had also implemented FASTag solution in November 2022 to enhance its Multilevel Car Parking (MLCP) system.

Vistara to operate Mumbai-Doha as its 50th destination

Mumbai, 30 November 2023: Vistara has announced the addition of Doha (Qatar) as its 50th destination, to its growing network. The airline will be operating direct, 4x weekly flights between Mumbai and Doha, starting from 15 December 2023 using its A321neo aircraft. Vinod Kannan,Chief Executive Officer, Vistara said,”We are thrilled to introduce direct flights between Mumbai and Doha – the capital of Qatar and a burgeoning financial hub in the Middle East. Given the city’s growing economic significance, this move not only further solidifies our presence in the Gulf region but also enhances our network offering from our Mumbai hub. We hope that our customers will appreciate having the option of flying with India’s best airline on this route.”
