    Dubai Airports’ 2023 forecast sees DXB soar beyond 2019 traffic to reach 86.8m

    Dubai, United Arab Emirates – 20th November 2023: Propelled by strong growth throughout the first three quarters of the year and anticipation of an exceptional surge in guest numbers in the final quarter, Dubai Airports is forecasting annual passenger traffic at Dubai International (DXB) to reach 86.8 million – surpassing 2019 traffic. DXB commenced the second half of 2023 with its growth story continuing unabated, with average monthly traffic reaching 7.6 million, tracking pre-pandemic levels throughout the third quarter. The world’s largest hub recorded 22.9 million passengers in Q3 – the highest quarterly traffic since 2019, taking the total year-to-date traffic for the first nine months of the year to 64.5 million passengers, up 39.3% compared to the same period in 2022 and 1% above 2019. “We’re thrilled but not entirely surprised that DXB is all set to surpass the pre-pandemic milestone well ahead of our initial projections by almost a year. Our outlook for the remainder of this year and the next remains optimistic. Teaming up with our strategic partners, we’re ready for the challenge to continue to exceed guest satisfaction amidst the continuous surge in traffic,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports. He added,“Our team embarked on a remarkable journey, navigating fresh challenges during the recovery period and swiftly revitalising the business. This edition is clearly playing a critical role in forging the path for the industry’s future.” Future Outlook Dubai Airports is expecting record-breaking numbers to continue in Q4 and 2024. To accommodate growth and to achieve the company’s ambition of revolutionising the guest journey at DXB, Dubai Airports is undertaking a strategic project to expand infrastructure capacity while enhancing operational efficiency. With a current capacity of 100 million passengers annually at DXB, the deployment of innovative technology, expansion and refurbishment of existing infrastructures and more efficient use of its space and resources is expected to propel the airport’s capacity to 120 million. As Dubai tops the list of cities with the highest spending by international visitors with a total earning of $29.4bn[1], and the Emirate at the forefront of deploying the latest technologies, Dubai Airports has continued to work closely with its stakeholders to provide guests the experience they expect from Dubai. Top destinations With 8.9 million passengers in the first nine months of the year, India was DXB’s top country destination in terms of traffic volume, followed by Saudi Arabia with 4.8 million passengers, and the UK (4.4 million passengers). Other country destinations of note include Pakistan with 3.1 million passengers, the US (2.7 million) and Russia (1.8 million). The top cities by traffic were London (2.7 million passengers) and Riyadh (1.9 million), closely followed by Mumbai (1.8 million) and Jeddah (1.7 million passengers). Performance DXB’s baggage handling system processed a total of 57.5 million bags in 2023 with a success rate of 99.8% – a rate of 2.5 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers – no mean feat for the world’s biggest hub for international traffic. In terms of baggage delivery on arrival, 91% of all baggage was delivered within 45 minutes to the guests. The baggage volume in 2023 represents 106.07% of the 2019 baggage volume at DXB. The average waiting time at passport control queues was less than 11 minutes for 96.4% of the arriving passengers and 95.1% of passengers queued for less than six minutes at departure passport control. The average queue times at security-check on departures was less than four minutes for 98.4% of total passengers. Cargo Cargo continued to gain momentum in the third quarter registering a surge of 12.3% year on year, to reach 446,400 tonnes. The strong performance this year has helped level out a double-digit contraction in cargo recorded at the end of last year. The hub recorded 1.3 million tonnes of cargo in the first nine months of the year, registering a minor decline of under 1%. Flights Flight movements in Q3 surged by 5.1% in the third quarter to reach 106,000. DXB handled 308,000 in total flight movements between January and September, up 25.2% year-on year.

    Mumbai Airport witnesses 107% Recovery and 18% YoY Growth in October 2023 Passenger Traffic

    Mumbai, 20 November, 2023: In the month of October 2023 CSMIA observed 107% recovery in passenger traffic as compared to Oct’19 (pre-pandemic). It recorded passenger traffic of over 4.25 million, with a growth of 18% as compared to October 2022 (3.6 Mn). International passengers at CSMIA alone witnessed a strong 20% growth with more than 1.14 Mn passengers travelling, in comparison to 0.94 Mn same period last year. CSMIA witnessed a total of 28,459 ATMs including 21,349 domestic and 7,110 international ATMs in October 2023, witnessing a growth of 2% compared to September 2023 (27,928), Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai emerged as the top domestic destination for CSMIA in October 2023, while Dubai, London, and Abu Dhabi remained the most preferred international destinations. Additionally, CSMIA recorded passenger traffic of over 0.55 MN on Mumbai – Delhi route alone, witnessing remarkable growth of 22% compared to Oct’ 22(0.45MN). IndiGo, Air India, and Vistara emerged as the top airlines with the highest market share in the domestic sector, while in the international sector, IndiGo, Air India, and Emirates maintained their leading positions in terms of market share. CSMIA significantly expanded its international connectivity with the introduction of new routes. Notably, Uganda Airlines initiated services on the Mumbai-Entebbe route starting from 7th October. Furthermore, Azerbaijan Airlines reinstated operations on Mumbai-Baku route and Air Canada resumed services on Mumbai-London-Toronto route effective 30th October, enhancing global connectivity. Adding to the roster, SpiceJet re-instated operations on the Bangkok route starting from 21st October, contributing to the diverse and convenient travel network available from CSMIA.

    ROE holds single exhibit of the Russian defence industry at DAS2023

    Dubai, 10th November 2023: JSC ROSOBORONEXPORT (part of Rostec State Corporation) is organizing an exhibit of the latest Russian-made Air Force, Air Defenсe and electronic warfare equipment at the Dubai Airshow 2023. As part of the exhibit, located in a single Russian pavilion with a total area of over 750 square meters, Russia’s 13 largest defence manufacturers will showcase 250+ models of modern weapons and military equipment.”The Dubai Airshow has steadily ranked among the top five largest and most important international aerospace exhibitions. For JSC ROSOBORONEXPORT, it is one of the main foreign platforms to promote Russian aircraft and air defence equipment, primarily in the Middle East and North Africa, whose share in the company’s order book reaches 50%. Here we have to compete with the global leading arms manufacturers,”- said Alexander Mikheev, Director General of JSC ROSOBORONEXPORT. “Dubai Airshow is a venue to unveil new products. In 2023, will present here for the first time the IL-76MD-90A(E) military transport aircraft, the latest air weapons for the fifth-generation fighters, including the RVV-MD2 and RVV-BD air-to-air guided missiles, the Kh-69 cruise missile, as well as the world’s best Ka-52 attack helicopter with a line of air weapons, which has proven effective in countering modern armored vehicles in real combat conditions.” The IL-76MD-90A(E) military transport aircraft, located in an outdoor static display area, is multifunctional and has been successfully used for a wide range of missions, including for special and airdrop operations. It can carry up to 60 tons of cargo to a distance of up to 4,000 km, and 20 tons – to 8,500 km. The aircraft is equipped with a multi-channel electro-optical sighting system to determine an airdrop area and control personnel and cargo airdrops, as well as the President-S defensive aids system. Along with the IL-76MD-90A(E), JSC ROSOBORONEXPORT will showcase various airdrop systems, including the Junker-DG-250 automated cargo delivery system for the first time in the Middle East. During demo flights, the Ka-52 scout/attack helicopter, recognized by international experts as the best helicopter in its market segment, will show visitors the elements of piloting available only for a coaxial helicopter: flat turn towards the target, lateral movements at high speeds and deep sideslip with a negative pitch angle. The Russian Aerospace Forces’ Russian Knights aerobatics demonstration team, which arrived at the Dubai Airshow at the invitation of the UAE Ministry of Defence, will perform aerobatics on Russian Su-30SM and Su-35S fighters during demo flights.In the unmanned aerial vehicles segment, JSC ROSOBORONEXPORT will present the Orlan-30 unmanned aerial system in the outdoor static display area, and the Orion-E reconnaissance/attack UAV and KUB-E loitering munition in the pavilion. In the pavilion, visitors to JSC ROSOBORONEXPOR ‘s stand can see the Su-57E fifth-generation fighter, IL-78MK-90A tanker aircraft, Su-35 multirole super-maneuverable fighter, Mi-28NE attack helicopter and the Mi-171Sh military transport helicopter. In the air defence segment, JSC ROSOBORONEXPORT is exhibiting a wide range of air defence and electronic warfare systems. They can be used both independently and as part of a layered air defence system. The Russian exhibit includes the S-400 Triumf and S-350E Vityaz air defence missile systems, the Viking surface-to-air missile (SAM) system and various versions of the Tor SAM system produced by the Almaz-Antey Air and Space Defence Corporation. A line of air defence equipment from the High Precision Systems holding company, incorporated into Rostec State Corporation, will be represented by the Pantsir-S1M self-propelled anti-aircraft gun/missile (SPAAGM) system, Igla-S and Verba man-portable air defence missile systems. Visitors to the Russian pavilion can get acquainted with Russian counter-UAV assets, including the RB-504P-E, Repellent-Patrol, Argument-2 and Argument-3 systems, as well as the Pole-21E and R-330Zh electronic warfare systems for countering precision guided munitions. Visitors will also be presented a Russian automated system used against small UAVs. As part of the Dubai Airshow 2023, JSC ROSOBORONEXPORT will present a new export product developed by the company’s specialists in cooperation with relevant experts of the Russian Aerospace Forces – an integrated survival and self-defence system for aircrews of aircraft and helicopters who have ejected or found themselves on the ground after an emergency landing. A key element of the new system is a 5.56mm Kalashnikov AK-19 shortened assault rifle, presented abroad for the first time. In addition to arranging the exhibit in the pavilion and the outdoor static display area, JSC ROSOBORONEXPORT will show reviews of the main Russian exhibit items, a preview of the air show and its most interesting moments on its digital platforms – on the company’s official website, its Youtube, VK and Telegram channels. “In addition to showcasing new Russian weapons at Dubai Airshow 2023, JSC ROSOBORONEXPORT will hold a rich business program. We are planning to meet with our partners from the Gulf countries and discuss military-technical cooperation between our countries. We will focus on technology partnership projects, which is the most popular format of cooperation in the Middle East today,”- Alexander Mikheev added. “In addition, during the airshow we will continue to develop contacts with African countries on the points of interaction found jointly during this year’s Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg”.

    Malaysia Airlines Commences Trivandrum – Kuala Lumpur Direct Flight

    Trivandrum, 10 November 2023: After successfully launching a direct service from Kuala Lumpur to Amritsar on 8 November 2023, Malaysia Airlines further enhanced connectivity between Malaysia and India by inaugurating another direct flight between Trivandrum and Kuala Lumpur yesterday. The inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur, bearing the flight number MH0116, received a warm welcome with a water salute upon its arrival at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (TRV) at 11:00am local time. Subsequently, the flight departed TRV at 12:01am on 10 November 2023 en route to Kuala Lumpur. With this development, the airline becomes the first full-service premium carrier to offer flights to South Asia and the Pacific from Amritsar and Trivandrum. This expansion has strengthened the airline’s Indian network to eight (8) key hubs, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi and Amritsar. Announcing the commencement of direct flights from Trivandrum, Dersenish Aresandiran, Chief Commercial Officer of Airlines from Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), said, “We are delighted to commence operations from Trivandrum, providing travellers with enhanced options for seamless travel to and from Malaysia. The launch of three new routes within a span of one month is a testament to our steadfast commitment towards India, our leading international market. Further, we have also expanded the scope of our hyper-personalised offerings and would encourage our Indian customers to take advantage of the same.” The airline is scheduled to commence operations to another Indian route, Ahmedabad, starting from 1 December 2023. With these additions, the airline will be operating 65 weekly flights to India, raising the count of its services in the country to nine (9) key hubs.

    United Aircraft Corporation to participate in the Dubai Airshow

    10th Nov 2023, Dubai: The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC, part of the Rostec State Corporation) will for the first time present its new modernized heavy transport aircraft IL-76MD-90A(E)at the airshow in Dubai. The aircraft is painted in the new UAC corporate livery. This heavy transport aircraft is a deep modernization of the well-proven Il-76 aircraft, but, despite the external similarity, it is fundamentally different from its predecessor. The aircraft is attracting great interest in the Gulf countries and the Middle East in general.The Corporation’s stand in the Russian pavilion will feature an interactive exposition of the entire model range of UAC-produced aircraft. A busy business program is planned for the exhibition, including meetings with current and potential customers and presentations on a number of products. “We consider the Middle East as one of important regions for promoting our products. And if at previous exhibitions we showed our civil and military programs, this year we are demonstrating the IL-76MD-90A(E) heavy transport aircraft for the first time. UAC is one of the few companies in the world that has advanced competencies in all segments of aircraft manufacturing,” noted Yuri Slyusar, UAC General Director. Demand for UAC products in the combat aviation segment remains high. At the same time, interest in the world in general and in the Middle East in particular has increased significantly as a result of the successful use of aircraft in real combat conditions. Russian equipment confirms its high combat and flight performance qualities. The air show’s flying displaywill be decorated by the performance of the Russian Knights aerobatic team on the new super-maneuverable Su-35S and Su-30SM multirole fighters.

    Virgin Atlantic Plans 100% SAF-Fueled Transatlantic Flight

    United Kingdom, 6th Nov 2023: Virgin Atlantic (Virgin), the British airline, received approval by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to use 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for the first ever long-haul test flight across the Atlantic Ocean from London Heathrow to New York JFK on November 28, 2023. We are of the opinion that this long-haul transatlantic flight would represent an important milestone toward the ultimate long-term goal of SAF transition at scale, providing a high-profile demonstration of the viability of the technology. “Despite this positive development, broad 100% SAF usage at scale will take years as significant hurdles remain.” said Rohit Kumar, Assistant Vice President, Diversified Industries. “Technology questions regarding whether modifications to current SAF properties and/or existing aircraft will be required remain unanswered at this stage. In addition, higher cost of the fuel and production bottlenecks are also material challenges”. We believe SAF will play an important role in the airline sector’s strategy to achieve its long-term decarbonization targets and credit implication for airlines will depend on the impact from the higher cost of SAFs on air travel demand and airlines’ margins.

    IL 38 SD long range maritime patrol aircraft decommissioned by IAF

    1st Nov 2023, Delhi: The Indian Navy’s Ilyushin-38 Sea Dragon Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft bid farewell after 46 years of glorious service to the nation. The decommissioning ceremony was held on 31 Oct 23 at INS Hansa, Dabolim. The Chief of the Naval Staff, dignitaries, and veteran officers and sailors of the IL-38 squadron graced the event with families, reminiscing about the yeoman service. INAS 315 was commissioned on 01 Oct 1977 with the induction of IL-38 aircraft heralding a modern era of airborne Long Range Maritime Reconnaissance and Anti-Submarine Warfare in the Navy. With its unique capabilities, striking prowess and extended reach covering the vast Indian Ocean region, the IL-38 SD has over the years proven itself to be a formidable force multiplier. The mighty ‘Winged Stallion” that adorns the squadron crest has been living up to the squadron motto of ‘Victory is my Profession’, keeping a sharp vigil over and beneath the seas, in its relentless pursuit to secure nation’s maritime boundaries. The dedicated men and women manning and maintaining these mighty aircraft ensured persistent mission readiness and efficient exploitation of the aircraft and mission systems. In her last legs, the aircraft enabled ‘Aatmanirbhar’ capability enhancement by successfully integrating indigenous Sahayak Air Droppable Containers (which provide critical logistics support to units deployed at sea) and a trial platform for torpedoes. The aircraft was also featured in the 2023 Republic Day Flypast at New Delhi. “While flying will come to an end, two of these aircraft will remain stationed permanently at the National Maritime Heritage Museum, Lothal, Gujarat and at Nipani in Karnataka – inspiring the future generations”. Speaking on the occasion Adm R Hari Kumar CNS conveyed his felicitations “to ‘Team 315’-the present and the past; to your predecessors, guides and mentors- and not to forget, to those who are not amongst us today”. Appreciating the strength, focus, energy, and the hardwork of the crew which overcame the numerous constraints,so that the stallions could dominate the skies the CNS stated “And yet, you prevailed; the aircraft performed; the squadron peaked; and the Navy pivoted to an era of normalising sustained LRMR operations across our primary areas of interest”. The De-induction ceremony of IL-38 SD marks the end of a glorious era that heralded path-breaking capabilities in Maritime Reconnaissance and Anti-Submarine Warfare operations. The operational role of IL-38 SD in a constantly evolving and dynamic IOR as ‘Eyes in the Sky’ and its contribution during various mission-critical deployments would remain forever etched in the history of Indian Naval Aviation.
