    Biman Bangladesh Airlines Supercharges its Connectivity With SITA Connect

    Bangladesh, 19th July 2023: Biman Bangladesh Airlines Ltd. (BG) has partnered with SITA to adopt a suite of state-of-the-art connectivity solutions that will increase network speeds, optimize the airline’s operations, and reduce expansion costs. SITA Connect Go is a new Secure SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network) solution designed specifically for the air transport industry. The solution was developed in partnership with Versa Networks, the recognized secure access service edge (SASE) leader. It offers a software-based solution that allows multiple airlines, ground handlers, and other tenants to digitally transform at whatever pace they choose. Secure access is provided to virtualized applications and infrastructure at airports and in the cloud, delivering more scalable and agile performance. The deployment will improve the airline’s performance by giving the IT operations team a granular view and full visibility into their network usage and application performance. This will enable better decision-making and critical business application performance. It is all managed through a centralized platform that simplifies network management and orchestration. SITA Connect solutions will empower BG with an increased bandwidth of up to 600%, enabling unrivaled speed, flexibility, and agility to connect quickly and securely to applications and systems at their town and airport offices. These enhancements have been extended to BG at no additional cost demonstrating a reduction in total cost ownership as BG expands its network. The deal comes as SITA and BG celebrate 50 years of partnership and will future-proof the airline’s operations for planned growth, ensuring BG is ready to embrace a hybrid cloud environment in the future and add new applications as and when they need to.     Port Blair airport gets new terminal building

    New Delhi, 18thJuly, 2023: The Prime Minister,Narendra Modi inaugurated the New Integrated Terminal Building of Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair via video conferencing.With a total built up area of 40,837 sqm., the new terminal building is capable to handle 1200 passengers during the busiest operational hour also known as peak hourand about 50 lakh passengers annually. The new passenger terminal building has three floors comprising of lower ground, upper ground and first floor. The lower ground floor will be used as remote arrival, bus lounge and service area; the upper ground floor as access to the terminal building for departure and arrival of the passengers and the first floor as Security Hold Area (SHA), for international passengers. Stressing on the need of a new terminal building in Port Blair, HMCA said, “this airport will boost tourism, making Andaman & Nicobar Islands a gateway of employment, investment & education.” Inspired from nature, the architectural design of the airport terminal resembles a shellshaped structure depicting sea and islands. The airport building isequipped with 28 check-in counters, 12 immigration counters, three passenger boarding bridges and three conveyor belts.An Apron suitable for two B-767-400 and two AB-321 typeof aircraft has also been constructed at Port Blair Airport at a cost of Rs. 80 Crore, making airport suitable for parking of 10 aircraft at a time. Addressing the gathering, PM said that “even though today’s program is taking place in Port Blair, the entire nation is keenly looking towards the Union Territory as the demand for increasing the passenger handling capacity of Veer Savarkar International Airport is being fulfilled”.Operationalization of the new terminal building will give boost to the expanding tourism industry and will also embolden the island economy. Increased aerial connectivity to the islands will create new employment opportunities for the local community.

    Digitalisation – Key to Indian Aviation Industry for Safety, Profitability and Sustainability

    As the aviation sector grows, digitalization will enable the sector by streamlining procedures, lowering manual labor requirements, and fostering collaboration to provide a seamless experience for all stakeholders by creating and delivering custom digital applications quickly and at scale. By Sri Srinivasan, Chief Revenue Officer, Zvolv Recent developments in the aviation sector – including the proposed Air India and IndiGo investments with their fleet renewals to revamping of the airports signal a marked shift within the Indian Aviation industry, fast-tracking aviation sector growth and reiterating its criticality to keep India moving.Airlines are evolving their business operating models and focusing on driving a “better” travel experience for consumers. As airlines evolve, the airports are becoming “destinations” by themselves, rather than a channel facilitating travel. Slowly and steadily, the leading airports of the country such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru are being revamped keeping the “destination” approach in mind. Airports Authority of India (AAI) is actively looking to upgrade and enhance more than 70 additional airports across tier 2 & tier 3 cities, an effort directly linked to the growing preference for air travel by Indian consumers and passengers. The Indian government expects to invest $1.83 Bn in the development of airport infrastructure by 2026. The sector will have a huge impact with an economic multiplier of 3.1 and an employment multiplier of 6x in this phase. The private airlines’ expansion is seeing an uptick in the Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) investments, with leading plane builders Boeing and Airbus, and international carriers, dramatically increasing their investments in MRO set up in-country. To achieve the Indian government’s stated goal of a unified transportation policy, the aviation sector is key. Air cargo and associated logistics cost efficiencies will be fundamental to driving the government’s ambition to improve national logistics cost efficiencies from 13% to 10% of the country’s GDP. Challenges & Opportunities -“Doing More with Less” Whilst investments in the aviation industry are certainly seeing an uptick, there are still some real challenges the industry is facing for it to fulfill the promise of keeping India moving. A majority of operations within the airport, airlines, and logistics segments are still run by legacy core systems and a multitude of manual and paper-driven processes. These legacy technologies continue to increase safety risks and drive costs upwards. The Indian aviation industry as a low-margin industry continues to face pressure from all sides to reduce costs by optimizing operational efficiency. Cut-throat competition leading to an airline price war, rising fuel bills for the airlines, and the overall macroeconomic conditions add to the current uncertainty for aviation players looking to invest for growth, all of which represent significant challenges to the industry. As the e-commerce market continues to explode, managing supply chain risks is becoming a priority risk for many corporations. Logistics-focused investments are key to mitigating this risk and improving supply chain resilience. The still-developing MRO ecosystem (with airlines fleet refreshing underway) creates a challenging narrative for an industry segment having the ambition to make a difference to a few hundred million citizens. In addition, sustainability is a continued concern for the industry, with growing recognition that transformation is required to achieve the stated emission reduction goals of tomorrow. The aviation sector has a key role to play here and the industry titans whilst acknowledging this challenge, do not necessarily have an easy way to finding a path that balances environmental concerns, vis-a-vis short-term commercial needs. How citizens look at sustainability will also determine the pressure on the industry to transform on this key topic. However, the good news is there is a tremendous opportunity for aviation players to invest in digital technologies to modernise and operationalise their legacy processes within and around the airports and their ecosystems. From leveraging Generative AI for improved customer service and delivering enhanced forecasting capabilities to managing passenger and cargo demand accurately, to metaverse technologies (incl VR/AR) getting deployed within airports to transform the customer experience e.g. virtual check-ins, to driving airport development leveraging digital twins capability, technology has been playing a key role in transforming this sector globally. The Indian aviation sector has an opportunity to leapfrog with such technology-led advancements.The recent example of the DigiYatra project, with almost a million+ downloads of the DigiYatra app in less than a few months, provides a glimpse of what the future holds. The DigiYatra initiative has the potential to extend passenger experience beyond the physical precincts of an airport – think seamless passenger check-ins at airport hotels beyond the airport with the DigiYatra ID. The use case of leveraging this digital infrastructure is still in its nascency and is only expected to greatly enhance as the ecosystem develops around this program. Likewise, we are seeing increasing adoption of modern low code technology platforms by leading airlines and airports across the country – from digitising taxi booking process outside the airports to airport retailing and commerce, safety inspection checklists and fuel price management, to contract and supplier management process automation, low code platforms are fast-tracking the airports and airlines efforts to find the efficiencies without compromising on experience. This is only a good sign for an industry looking to find ways to “Do more with less” and scrap to find more avenues for higher margin realisation. Conclusion An aspirational population willing to spend on air travel, and demanding consumers used to sophisticated mobile technologies and implicitly expecting higher levels of personalisation, will drive the aviation industry forward. The government of India’s transformation program around enabling better services for its citizens, and focusing on improving underlying supply chain resilience with targeted investments in logistics and MRO, with an overarching travel and transportation framework augurs well. Smart technology, automation, and digitalisation are key for the aviation industry to thread the needle between safety, profitability, and sustainability. The aviation players understand this and are starting to take the right steps to make the aviation sector key to keeping India moving.     Singapore Airlines to temporarily increase seat capacity from Kolkata during Durga Puja

    India, 17th July 2023: Singapore Airlines (SIA) has announced temporary upgauge of its Boeing 737-8 services to Airbus A350-900 services from 17-20 October 2023, and again on 26 and 27 October 2023. Subject to regulatory approvals, this change of aircraft type from a narrow-body to a wide-body over the Durga Puja period will help meet the surge in demand for travel during the festival. Singapore Airlines currently flies daily from Kolkata, operating its 154-seater B737-8 aircraft from Tuesdays to Fridays and its 303-seater A350-900 aircraft every Monday, Saturday and Sunday. With this upgauge, the Airline will operate daily A350-900 services from 14-23 October 2023 and again from 26-30 October 2023, thus increasing SIA’s total capacity from Kolkata by 22% over the Durga Puja period. Daily A350-900 operations during this time will also offer customers an inventory of 40 lie-flat Business Class seats per day as opposed to just 10 on the B737-8 aircraft. The complete current and revised flight schedules for Kolkata can be found in Annexe A at the end of this release. All times stated in the schedules are local. Sy Yen Chen, General Manager India for Singapore Airlines, said, “We are delighted to announce this temporary capacity increase from Kolkata over the Durga Puja period, when demand for travel usually exceeds availability of seats. The Founder and Group Chairman of SkyOne FZE and Aerosiva Holding Limited, Jaideep Mirchandani has expanded the scope of pilot training facilities beyond the UAE,much to the delight of Indian aviation aspirants. This strategic move aims at providing comprehensive training solutions and further solidifies Pier Seven’s position in aviation education.     Prime Minister’s address at the CEO Forum in Paris

    Paris, 15th July 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and H.E. Emmanuel Macron, President of the Republic of France, jointly addressed a group of leading Indian and French CEOs at Quai d’Orsay in Paris. The Forum consisted of CEOs from diverse sectors including aviation, manufacturing, defence, technology, energy, among others. Prime Minister acknowledged the role played by these industry leaders in strengthening bilateral relations and promoting economic cooperation between India and France. He highlighted India’s progress in renewables, startups, pharma, IT, digital payments and infrastructure and the various initiatives undertaken to foster business. The Prime Minister encouraged the CEOs to utilize the investment opportunities in India and be a part of India’s growth story. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held delegation level talks with H.E. Emmanuel Macron, President of the Republic of France at the Elysee Palace. Both leaders held extensive discussions on wide range of areas of bilateral cooperation including defence and security, civil nuclear, science and technology, energy, trade and investment, space, climate action and people to people ties. Discussions also covered India’s G20 Presidency, Indo-Pacific, and regional and global issues of mutual interest. Ambitious outcome documents, including “Horizon 2047: Charting the future of India-France Strategic Partnership”, were adopted.     LVM3 M4 vehicle successfully launched Chandrayaan-3 into orbit

    Chandrayaan-3, in its precise orbit, has begun its journey to the Moon. Health of the Spacecraft is normal- ISRO India, 15th July 2023: Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 to demonstrate end-to-end capability in safe landing and roving on the lunar surface. It consists of Lander and Rover configuration. It will be launched by LVM3 from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota. The propulsion module will carry the lander and rover configuration till 100 km lunar orbit. The propulsion module has Spectro-polarimetry of Habitable Planet Earth (SHAPE) payload to study the spectral and Polari metric measurements of Earth from the lunar orbit. Lander payloads: Chandra’s Surface Thermophysical Experiment (ChaSTE) to measure the thermal conductivity and temperature; Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity (ILSA) for measuring the seismicity around the landing site; Langmuir Probe (LP) to estimate the plasma density and its variations. A passive Laser Retroreflector Array from NASA is accommodated for lunar laser ranging studies. Rover payloads: Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) and Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscope (LIBS) for deriving the elemental composition in the vicinity of landing site. Chandrayaan-3 consists of an indigenous Lander module (LM), Propulsion module (PM) and a Rover with an objective of developing and demonstrating new technologies required for Inter planetary missions. The Lander will have the capability to soft land at a specified lunar site and deploy the Rover which will carry out in-situ chemical analysis of the lunar surface during the course of its mobility. The Lander and the Rover have scientific payloads to carry out experiments on the lunar surface. The main function of PM is to carry the LM from launch vehicle injection till final lunar 100 km circular polar orbit and separate the LM from PM. Apart from this, the Propulsion Module also has one scientific payload as a value addition which will be operated post separation of Lander Module. The launcher identified for Chandrayaan-3 is LVM3 M4 which will place the integrated module in an Elliptic Parking Orbit (EPO) of size ~170 x 36500 km. The mission objectives of Chandrayaan-3 are: 1. To demonstrate Safe and Soft Landing on Lunar Surface 2. To demonstrate Rover roving on the moon and 3. To conduct in-situ scientific experiments. To achieve the mission objectives, several advanced technologies are present in Lander such as, 1. Altimeters: Laser & RF based Altimeters 2. Velocimeters: Laser Doppler Velocimeter & Lander Horizontal Velocity Camera 3. Inertial Measurement: Laser Gyro based Inertial referencing and Accelerometer package 4. Propulsion System: 800N Throttleable Liquid Engines, 58N attitude thrusters & Throttleable Engine Control Electronics 5. Navigation, Guidance & Control (NGC): Powered Descent Trajectory design and associate software elements 6. Hazard Detection and Avoidance: Lander Hazard Detection & Avoidance Camera and Processing Algorithm 7. Landing Leg Mechanism. To demonstrate the above said advanced technologies in earth condition, several Lander special tests have been planned and carried out successfully viz. 1. Integrated Cold Test – For the demonstration of Integrated Sensors & Navigation performance test using helicopter as test platform 2. Integrated Hot test – For the demonstration of closed loop performance test with sensors, actuators and NGC using Tower crane as test platform 3. Lander Leg mechanism performance test on a lunar simulant test bed simulating different touch down conditions.

    National security strategy must evolve in line with changes in geo-political order: CDS Gen.Anil Chauhan

    Delhi, 14th July 2023: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan has said that international geo-politics is in a flux and the national strategy should aim to absorb the changes in such a way that it meets the challenges and exploits the opportunities. Inaugurating the DRDO Directors’ Conclave, an annual event of DRDO, in New Delhi on July 14, 2023, General Chauhan stressed the need to perform, reform, transform, inform and conform to meet the emerging challenges. Referring to the “Technology Requirements emerging from Theaterisation”, he said superiority in technology and tactics is the need of the hour and Indian Armed Forces are investing in new technologies to win engagements. Highlighting the principles of jointness, integration and theaterisation, General Anil Chauhan said in the national security realm, the concept of theaterisation is a fundamental change that is on the anvil. “It is one of the most ambitious changes with far reaching implications attempted post-independence. The start on this journey depends on the right steps being taken first towards jointness and integration. Theaterisation involves creation of tri service theatre specific structures for effective response along the entire spectrum of conflict,” said General Anil Chauhan. The CDS said, integration in the physical domain aims to achieve a multiplier effect as it combines the unique capabilities of the Services through integrated processes and structures to increase the war fighting capability. Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat, in his inaugural address, highlighted the changes occurring in the nature of warfare and criticality involved in them. He stressed on the need to reform and transform the perspectives in tandem the goal of Aatmanirbharta and Make in India. General Chauhan released the DRDO’s second list of systems and subsystems for industry to design, develop and manufacture, in line with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat. This second list of DRDO is in continuation to the list of 108 items released earlier. He also released the “DRDO Guidelines for Production Coordination”, which outlines the mechanism for production coordination and resolution of issues associated with production of DRDO developed military equipment/ platforms/ systems. The guidelines bring out a two-tier mechanism to resolve issues related to production of these systems by involving designers, users, production agencies, quality agencies and other stakeholders. The initiative will further pave the way for the Indian Defence Industry to develop defence technologies/ systems towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The two-day conclave is organised as follow up to the various Chintan Shivir meetings and review of their outcome by the Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh. It is being attended by top officials of DRDO including Directors General of various technology as well as corporate clusters, directors of DRDO laboratories, directors of DRDO headquarters and Integrated Financial Advisors (IFAs). It will include deliberations on various issues in line with the theme “Redefining Role of DRDO in the Wake of New Government Policies and Emerging Scenarios” through six technical sessions each followed by a panel discussion.     IAF Continues Relief Operations in Flood Affected States

    Delhi, 14th July 2023: The IAF has been fully involved in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations in the states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab in the light of current flood situation. In the last 48 hours, a total 40 sorties have been carried out, in which, 126 people have been rescued and 17 tons of relief materials have been distributed in various areas.In the last 24 hrs, major operations have been carried out towards flood affected areas of Haryana. Villages of Nihara, Allaudin Majra, Bishangarh, Segta, Bhunni, Mumni, Segti and Jansui were provided with relief materials consisting of rations, tarpaulin sheets, fresh food and water bottles by M-17 helicopters. Airwarriors and all requisite assets such as M-17 and Chinook Helicopters and An-32 and C-130 Transport Aircraft remain on standby to undertake required operations.

    IGI Airport 4th Runway and elevated Taxiway gets operational

    Delhi, 14th July 2023: India’s first and only dual-way elevated taxiway and 4th runway at IGI Airport, New Delhi was inaugurated by Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister for Civil Aviation and Steel. With this, the IGI Airport, New Delhi has become the first airport in the country to have four runways and becomes the first airport in the country to have an elevated taxiway. Eastern Cross Taxiway (ECT) will help in enhancing the passenger experience by reducing time spent on the tarmac by flyers after landings and before take-offs. Furthermore, four runway operations and the ECT will significantly increase capacity at IGIA – making it capable of handling 1700+ movements. Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said, “ Today is a landmark day for Indian civil aviation, both on infrastructure side and services side. The Eastern Cross Taxiway is the first of its kind in India. Also, this elevated Eastern Cross Taxiway (ECT) will see a reduction of almost 55 thousand tons of CO2 Emission on annual basis. Also, this ECT, along with the fourth runway and the new integrated Terminal 1, will make Delhi Airport future-ready and fulfil the dream of creating a major International Hub. Capacity along with Technological intervention will further enhance the passenger experience. The northern part of the airfield and the southern part of the airfield will be conveniently connected by this. It means an 8 to 9 minute reduction in taxi time. This runway makes Delhi Airport, the only airport in the country to have 4 runways. This runway along with the terminal expansion will add to creating capacity to serve more than 109 million people throughput which would crest and beat even Atlanta in its capability. With that capacity in place, we would be well positioned both on an infrastructure side and a capability side for creating the international civil aviation hub in India.”
