Etihad Airways Launches Inaugural Flight To Guangzhou

Abu Dhabi,11th October 2022: Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has launched its first-ever scheduled flights linking Abu Dhabi and Guangzhou. The inaugural flight, EY868, departed Abu Dhabi last night after a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by representatives from the Chinese Embassy to the UAE, Abu Dhabi Airports Company, Miral Asset Management and Etihad Aviation Group. The flight touched down at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport this morning at 10:25 (local time), making Etihad the first international airline to operate long-haul passenger services to the top three Chinese gateways – Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou – since the start of the pandemic. Tony Douglas, Group Chief Executive Officer, Etihad Aviation Group, said: “We have been tremendously excited about the launch of this service. Guangzhou is actually the latest destination to be opened in China by Etihad since the launch of the Abu Dhabi–Shanghai route back in 2012. It will continue to help build a solid air bridge for commerce and cultural exchanges between China and the UAE. “We are very grateful for the support from both governments, business partners and our Etihad team, as our new service to Guangzhou will not only further address the huge demand for passenger travel between the UAE and China, building on the formidable people and business ties between the two markets, but also support the increasing consolidation and strengthening of Etihad’s presence in China and the global aviation industry. It also reinforces the airline’s commitment to serving the Chinese market.” To highlight Guangzhou’s reputation as “the spiritual home of Cantonese cuisine”, and to appreciate the cultural diversity within Etihad’s in-house hospitality team, the event offered a tapestry of cuisines, consisting of several signature dim sum and Arabic-style canapés jointly created by Etihad Airways Chef Murray Reason and Capital Hospitality Executive Chef Imad Soboh. MoCA Conducts 4th Heli-India Summit 2022 in Kashmir

Kashmir, 10th October 2022: Minister of Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said that a civil enclave will be built in Jammu at a cost of Rs 861 crores and the Srinagar’s present terminal will be expanded three times from 20,000 square meters to 60,000 square meters at a cost of Rs 1500 crores.Scindia said this while inaugurating 4th Heli-India Summit 2022 with the theme ‘Helicopters for last Mile Connectivity’ at Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Centre, Srinagar, in presence of Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Sh. Manoj Sinha. During the summit,Scindia said that the decrease in VAT on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) from 26.5 percent to one percent by the J&K government has set a new dawn for air connectivity in the Union territory with 360 percent increase in refueling, thus increasing the air connectivity to Jammu and Kashmir. Praising PM Narendra Modi for bringing a revolution in the Civil Aviation sector in India from 2014 onwards, Sh. Scindia said that from 1947 to 2014, the country had only 74 airports, but now the number has increased to 141, with 67 added in last seven years which shows the pace of progress in the Civil Aviation sector.The government is committed to increase the number to above 200 in the next few years, Sh. Scindia added. Scindia said that the Civil Aviation has now become the need of the hour not only for India but for humankind across the world as it always brings with it two important multipliers, the economic multiplier and the employment multiplier. The sector has huge impact with economic multiplier of 3.1 and employment multiplier of 6, the Minister informed. Therefore, the Civil Aviation across the world today forms a very important cog of the wheel of economic development, the Minister added. During the summit, Sh. Scindia said that helicopters have multifarious roles, providing urban connectivity which is no more an elitist prerogative in India but is based on PM Narendra Modi’s vision ‘Sab Ude, Sab Jude’. The other roles of helicopter service has been the emergency medical services and disaster management during floods, rescue operations etc., the Minister informed. Jammu & Kashmir has set an example of the best use of helicopter service when it erected transmission lines and towers using heli-cranes (sky cranes) on the Peer Panjal mountain range, the Minister added. Scindia further said that Civil Aviation Ministry not only organizes summits but also monitors the progress of ‘Sankalps’ taken from one summit to another. During the 3rd Heli-India Summit at Dehradun, the eight Sankalps taken like providing Heli-Sewa Portal, Heli-Disha, Helicopter Accelerator Cell, doing away with the landing & parking charges for helicopter service, creation of specific helicopter corridors, helipads to be given priority while framing DPR for all new highways, upgradation of Juhu airbase to accommodate night operations etc. were taken to their logical end. HeliSewa portal is fully online and being used by all operators for obtaining landing permissions to helipads, and it also is creating a database of helipads in the country. HeliDisha, the guidance material on helicopter operations for State administration has been distributed to 780 districts. The Helicopter Accelerator Cell is fully active in resolving helicopter issues and the advisory group of industry representatives is helping identify problems areas. “We have waived off landing and parking charges for helicopters at airports and we have started helicopter sensitization training of ATC officers for speedier helicopter traffic handling. Three helicopter corridors from Mumbai-Pune, Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar, and Shamshabad-Begumpet have been created and new IFR corridors are being planned. Working with MoRTH, we have been able to allot helipad spaces from the design stage for all future expressways and major highways so that it can be used for the evacuation of accident victims. And we have already commenced work on the upgradation of Juhuheli base which is the largest in the country, to accommodate night operations and helicopter IFR routes using GAGAN.”, he added. The Minister informed that today the guidelines on Fractional Ownership Model have been released to help grow the non-scheduled operations. “While our scheduled operations are on the fast track and we have increased the fleet size from 400 aeroplanes in 2013 to more than 700 in 2021-22, through these guidelines, we should be able to spur growth in the non-scheduled fleet too. Fractional ownership will lower the barrier on the cost of acquisition of helicopters and aeroplanes through pooled capital by multiple owners. This will allow companies and individuals to minimise their capital outflow by sharing the purchase cost, reducing their exposure to risks and making it financially easier to run a NSOP business. Fractional Ownership Model has the potential to energize the NSOP segment by democratising ownership of aircraft and it can be a key driver to boost the number of aircraft existing in the NSOP industry. The helicopter industry should be recognised for its social service. It is not a transportation vehicle but a transformation tool, it can be used not only for economic development but could also to transform lives.”, he added. Shri scindia said that we have also decided to incubate a HEMS pilot called Project Sanjeevani by deploying a helicopter in the next few weeks to provide emergency medical services at AIIMS Rishikesh. The helicopter will be based at the hospital at 20 min notice and will have a service cover to an area of 150 km radius. It is the intention of the Govt to expand medical outreach and access to trauma care services to a wider population base across the country using the speed advantage and mobility of helicopters. We will use the learnings from Project Sanjeevani to explore the viability of the concept, its benefits, and the attendant risks and later articulate a national policy on HEMS before committing larger resources. Govt. approves creation of Weapon Systems branch in Indian Air Force

New Delhi, 10th Oct 2022: In a historic step for the Indian Air Force (IAF), Government has approved the creation of a new branch, called the Weapon Systems (WS) branch. The creation of WS branch would entail unification of all weapon system operators under one entity dedicated to the operational employment of all ground-based and specialist airborne weapon systems. The branch would encompass operators in four specialised streams of Surface-to-Surface missiles, Surface-to-Air missiles, Remotely Piloted Aircraft and Weapon System Operators in twin/multi-crew aircraft. The branch will contribute immensely by enhancing the war fighting capability of the Indian Air Force.

Akasa Air adds Delhi & Ahmedabad to its network

6th October 2022,New Delhi: Akasa Air, India’s newest airline, shared its expansion plan with addition of Delhi and Ahmadabad to it growing network. Speaking at an event to mark the airline’s first 60 days of operations, Vinay Dube, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Akasa Air said, “Our first two months have been very exciting and satisfying as we moved from planning to commercial operations. We have been hyper focused on establishing and delivering an empathetic, dependable, and reliable flying experience unlike anything witnessed in the Indian skies thus far”. “We are delighted that a significant number of flyers have already chosen to fly with us and are very pleased with the positive feedback we have received on our product and service. Akasa Air also announced starting flights to and from Delhi from 7th October onwards establish the network with national capital as its sixth destination. Additionally, Delhi- Ahmedabad routes will also start serving both the routes with daily flights in each direction. The airline has announced eight destinations so far, including Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Kochi, Chennai, Delhi, Agartala and Guwahati being covered with 11 non-stop routes. Commenting on the occasion, Praveen Iyer, Co-Founder, and Chief Commercial Officer, Akasa Air, said “We are elated by the response we have received as we welcomed on board more than 100,000 passengers within just 60 days of operations. Further strengthening our domestic connectivity and catering to more flyers during the festive season, we are delighted to be able to add Delhi to our network and connect the capital city to the rapidly growing and vibrant cities of Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. By expanding our network with an aircraft arriving every 15 days, we aim to fulfil our goal of developing a strong pan-India presence and expect to operate 300 weekly flights by October end.” In a new concept among the Indian carrier, Akasa Air will commence pet-friendly service from 1st November 2022, wherein passengers flying on Akasa Air will be able to travel with their pets in the cabin. Akasa Air has been progressively expanding its network with the introduction of routes in Tier 2 and 3 cities. The company has recently received its sixth aircraft and will have a fleet size of 18 aircraft by the end of March 2023. Over the next four years, the airline will add 54 additional aircraft, taking its total fleet size to 72 aircraft.

IAG Cargo survey reveals that Indians are booking air-cargo digitally

6th October 2022,New Delhi: IAG Cargo, the cargo division of International Airlines Group (IAG) hosted a roundtable at the JW Marriott Hotel in New Delhi to discuss key air cargo trends and business updates. Speakers included John Cheetham, Chief Commercial Officer at IAG Cargo, Yashpal Sharma, President of Air Cargo Forum India (ACFI) & Managing Director at Skyways Group, along with Pratul Shekhar, Senior Director Airfreight at DSV. IAG Cargo recently conducted a global survey of freight forwarders and logistics industry professionals to get their thoughts on the future of the industry. This served as a focal point of discussion, highlighting trends in digitalisation and sustainability. The results showed that the Indian market has heavily adopted online booking as a way of booking air-cargo with 76% of respondents declaring it as their primary booking method, compared to only 46% globally. In sharp contrast, the global market still relies on email as their primary channel for booking freight (53%). The roundtable addressed these statistics in line with the digital advancements taking place and how the speakers are preparing their businesses to adapt to the fast-paced technological changes, which they believe will take place at an even quicker rate compared to pre-pandemic. Indian freight forwarders and logistics professionals appear to place greater importance on sustainability than their global counterparts. 78% of those surveyed in India responded that their business has a sustainability strategy (the global response was 67%) and 68% said they considered sustainability to be “extremely important” compared to 38% in the global audience. The speakers talked about how sustainability is informing their business decisions and how they see the industry progressing with SAF goals. The number one concern of those surveyed was talent attraction and retention. This was particularly pronounced with respondents in India with 46% naming it as their number one business challenge. Star Air launches flight to Kolhapur

4th October 2022: Star Air, the aviation arm of Sanjay Ghodawat Group, inaugurated its direct flight services between Mumbai and Kolhapur under the Regional Connectivity Scheme.The launch of Kolhapur sector marks Star Air’s homecoming at its operational base. Orange Is The New Black: The History Of The ‘Black Box’

From its invention and throughout its evolution, the ‘black box’ has been crucial for maintaining and improving commercial aircraft safety since the 1950s. Here, component supply specialists Artemis Aerospace explore this essential piece of equipment and how it has developed into the modern technology used by the industry today. Why is it called a black box? Although commonly referred to as a ‘black box’, the device’s official name is flight data recorder (FDR) or cockpit voice recorder (CVR). Originally, flight recorders consisted of magnetic tape encased in a fireproof box that was painted black to protect the metal and prevent rust, hence the terminology ‘black box’ – an expression that was made popular by the British during World War II. However, after FDRs were mandated by the aviation industry in the 1960s, regulations stipulated that all flight recorders must be painted in ‘international orange’ – making them highly visible and easy to distinguish in the event of an incident. Early flight recorders Although the Australian scientist, David Warren, is credited with inventing the first flight and voice recorders for the commercial aviation industry, the earliest known design was made by François Hussenot and Paul Beaudoin at the Marignane flight test centre in France in 1939. The ‘Hussenograph’ was a photograph-based flight recorder that used scrolling photographic film and recorded instrument data, such as altitude and speed. Hussenot’s and Beaudouin’s legacy lives on through the Société Française des Instruments de Mesure, which they founded in 1947 and today forms part of the multi-national manufacturer of aircraft engines and equipment, Safran group.During WWII, Len Harrison and Vic Husband developed a crash and fire-proof flight recorder for the Ministry of Aircraft Production, setting the standard for today’s modern units. The first flight recorders for commercial aircraft Up until the 1950s, flight recorders were primarily used on military aircraft. However, in 1953, David Warren’s prototype FDR ‘The ARL Flight Memory Unit’ was specifically designed for post-crash investigations of civilian aircraft and was the first to record voices in the cockpit as well as instrument readings. During the same year, Professor James J. Ryan, who was a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Minnesota, invented and patented the flight recorder in the United States. However, unlike Warren’s invention, Ryan’s didn’t include a cockpit voice recorder, which wasn’t patented in the US until 1961 by Edmund A Boniface Jr. As recordings became digitised, this led to the FDR and CVR being combined into one unit called the CVDR.Most commercial jets are now additionally equipped with a QAR (quick access recorder) meaning data can be easily removed and accessed quickly in the event of less serious incidents, such as unplanned deviations, that require further investigation. Today’s systems are digitally controlled and include built-in test equipment that records how the aircraft is operating. This means that potential issues can be identified and dealt with before an incident occurs, making air travel even safer and more efficient than ever before. Flight recorders become mandatory Following the crash of Trans Australia Airlines Flight 538 in 1960, Australia became the first country in the world to make cockpit voice recorders mandatory. In 1964, the United States passed its first cockpit voice recorder rules requiring all turbine and piston aircraft with four or more engines to install CVRs by March 1967. By 1967, FDRs had become mandatory in many countries. Commercial aircraft were required to carry FDRs and CVRs housed in bright orange boxes in the tail of the aircraft, where they would stand the best chance of survival in the event of a crash. FDRs are now governed by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Authority) and the FAA (Federal Aviation Authority) in the United States. These regulators stipulate the specifications and standards FDRs must meet for aircraft. This includes FDRs being equipped with an underwater locator beacon that is automatically activated when an incident occurs. FDR improvements and updates Despite the introduction of the underwater locator beacon to aid FDR recovery following a crash, the technology was not without its limitations. Notably, the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in March 2014, demonstrated the restrictions of flight recorder technology, which required physical possession of the device in order to understand the cause of an accident. Unable to locate Flight 370 or its FDR, authorities called for live streaming of data from the aircraft to the ground. In addition to this, they requested for the range and battery life on all underwater locator beacons to be extended and that aircraft be fitted with a secondary deployable recorder that would be ejected from the aircraft before impact. FDRs of the future Artificial intelligence and telematics are leading the way in developing the aircraft of the future, including improving the collection of in-flight data and voice recordings. Honeywell’s latest flight deck, Anthem, provides anytime, anywhere data analytics and an engine-out function to automatically guide pilots to the nearest airport, while assessing factors such as terrain and wind speed. The NTSB (National Transport Safety Board) in the US has long been lobbying for installing cockpit video recorders in new and in-service commercial jets to improve the quality of information that can be gathered following an incident. However, this hasn’t been without controversy and ALPA (Air Line Pilots Association) has expressed concerns regarding privacy. Whatever the future holds for flight data recorders, they will continue to be essential to maintaining safe air travel for all. The technologies that can help airlines and MROs stretch their wings again

The commercial aviation sector is beginning to stretch its wings once again as international travel resumes. This revival has spotlighted a number of pinch points to be dealt with—such as reintroducing stored aircraft and converting passenger planes to cargo configurations and back again, all while balancing remote working and financial overheads to secure a long-term period of renewed growth and profitability.Technology is providing the answers. As OEMs, airlines, and MROs focus on integrating new technologies into their value chains and embracing digital transformation, we look at three key areas where new advancements can be most valuable and easily integrated to help gain competitive advantages in a sector where there is a fine line between profit and loss. Rob Mather, Vice President Aerospace & Defence Industries, IFS, explains. Since 2020 the aviation industry has faced unprecedented change, instability, and shock which has rippled throughout the entire sector—from flight restrictions and a host of quarantine regulations to complete state-wide commercial shutdowns that OEMs, airlines and MROs are still recovering from. Cancelled flights, mothballed planes, and aviation uncertainty Initial pandemic pressures saw onsite work change drastically. New restrictions, staff shortages due to isolation and stringent social distancing restrictions have all been challenges for businesses. In some cases, this has opened new opportunities for companies who have unlocked the potential—examples are the boom in freight and the corresponding uptick in ‘preighters’, the conversion of aircraft from passenger to cargo configuration, and the FAA using remote working channels in the evolution of the 737-MAX. There has also been a mixed reaction in reducing fleet sizes. Cirium reported that large commercial jets saw a 15% decrease in retirements as replacement orders became uneconomical—this was as OEMs were hit by worker and supply shortages. For example,the EU Parliament found European demand for manufacturing decreased by 43% in 2020 primarily due to Airbus order deferrals. Other airlines accelerated the retirement of costly aircraft with Oliver Wyman’s data showing 5,000 aircraft that were in service at the start of 2020 were no longer flying at the beginning of 2021. However, recovery has begun as passengers once more take to the skies with a predicted 47% more passengers flying in 2022 than in 2021—aided by increased vaccination numbers and lower Covid infection rates. This recovery is projected to only strengthen through the rest of this decade as worldwide fleet numbers are due to increase to 36,500 by 2031. This recovery is not without its unforeseen challenges. The airport infrastructure has significantly hampered travel experiences for both airlines and frustrated passengers. Staff shortages created by pandemic-induced layoffs have not return to the same levels and the results have led to flight cancellations and extreme delays at airports globally. Technology is on course to deliver transformation But there is still opportunity for airlines who invest in future-proofing operations through digital transformation to be first off the runway—currently, only 10% of the top carriers have invested in technology initiatives such as predictive maintenance—which would give them a large competitive advantage in the next few years, and minimise delays caused by aircraft issues. Traditionally airlines run on very fine margins, meaning an airline’s value chain is as lean as possible, and as such the adoption of a major IT infrastructure project has traditionally been seen as a potential operational and financial risk. The industry as a whole typically has no slack that can be used for resource investment, and any threat of a disruption to normal service caused by an IT project can be very costly. But the pandemic changed all that. The technologies that are enabling aviation to taxi for take-off However, this increase in IT spending does not have to be dedicated to large-scale or business-wide overhauls. IFS has found that both MROs and airlines are benefitting from tools that can open transformative new areas of potential such as investing in predictive maintenance and the efficiencies it offers. There are several operational areas that will allow for a competitive advantage to be created or maintained in this new aviation reality of post-pandemic recovery and the continued threat of potential disruption. In particular, there are three key maintenance-focused technologies that can create this advantage throughout an aircraft’s life cycle. 1. Predictive maintenance redefines efficiency with AI and an IoT One of the maturing industry technology applications is the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine Learning (ML) for predictive maintenance. Maintenance software applications now allow for the aggregation of real-time sensor data, business & operations data, logs, and more into a data lake infrastructure—with the ability to transform all this information into proactive maintenance tasks. These data insights, along with machine learning models, can then be used to produce advanced statistics and KPIs to provide a holistic view of the asset or component in question, combining historical and forecasted values. Thanks to these digital developments, the often risk-averse aviation industry can pivot to using predictive maintenance models not only to increase performance and reduce costs but also to better manage risk and enhance safety. For example, as of 2020, Rolls-Royce is using AI forecasting, which is supported by IFS, to help airline customers automatically update predicted maintenance deadlines for every life-limited component inside their engines—a key part of the Rolls-Royce Blue Data Thread strategy, a digital information thread connecting every Rolls-Royce powered aircraft, every airline operation, every maintenance shop, and every factory. 2. Digital help stems from remote assistance Passengers will now be greeted by more mobile, touchless, and socially distanced technology to help navigate them through the airports. Similarly, airlines have deployed technology to protect their employees and deliver new operational efficiencies. The proliferation of smart devices, and maintenance software applications now available on mobile has fast-forwarded merged reality—where the real and virtual world are mixed and objects from both can interact. With remote working and social distancing becoming commonplace, remote assistance technology is ready and available and has been taken up by more and more airlines and MROs who are quick to see the benefits and adopt the
