    EDGE Group to have Major Presence at INDO DEFENCE 2022 in Jakarta

    AFI KLM E&M and Ampaire signed MoU to introduce electrified aircraft

    Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance (AFI KLM E&M) and Ampaire have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), paving the way for future collaborations. Paris, Amstelveen, 25th October 2022: AFI KLM E&M and Ampaire have signed a memorandum of understanding that anticipates bringing the worldwide resources of AFI KLM E&M to the introduction and global support of electrified aircraft. The two companies intend to accelerate the introduction of sustainable aviation by utilizing their respective core competencies. The MoU covers a broad range of mutual interests, from Aircraft Development, Maintenance Training & Support and Data Analytics. Energize the future with experience Ampaire, a leader in electric aircraft, is in the process of certifying the nine-seat, hybrid-electric Eco Caravan, with a service introduction planned for 2024. The company intends to expand its product line to larger hybrid-electric aircraft and eventually to fully electric aircraft as that technology becomes technically and economically feasible. Under the MoU, the companies anticipate developing training for a worldwide network of ground engineers, installing Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) upgrades and, potential component pooling and operational data analysis to ensure optimal support. The companies are also planning to collaborate on STC installations of Ampaire’s hybrid-electric upgrades through the airline’s global MRO network.     ‘Path to Pride’: biggest-ever DefExpo, exclusively for Indian companies, opens in Gandhinagar

    Gandhinagar, 18th October 2022: India’s biggest-ever defence exhibition ‘DefExpo 2022’ opens up in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The 12th edition of the event has been organised on the theme ‘Path to Pride’ from October 18-22, 2022. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will grace the inaugural ceremony on October 19.Addressing the curtain raiser press conference in Gandhinagar on October 17, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh said, DefExpo 2022 will showcase the growing prowess of the domestic defence industry, which is one of the major drivers of the nation’s resolve to achieve ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ as envisioned by the Prime Minister. The biennial exhibition has been organised to support, showcase and forge partnerships for the Indian aerospace and defence manufacturing sectors with Indian as well as global customers to achieve the overall objective of catering to domestic requirements while fulfilling the needs of friendly foreign countries. Shri Rajnath Singh termed DefExpo 2022, exclusively for Indian companies, as a humble tribute of an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, who was the pillar of the Swadeshi movement. “DefExpo 2022 during ‘Amrit Kaal’ reflects India’s resolve to be among the leading nations in the defence & aerospace sectors in the next 25 years. Record registration Organised in the largest-ever total area of over one lakh sqm (previous edition being 76,000 sqm) and with record registration of 1,340 companies, DefExpo 2022 is set to be the biggest defence exhibition till date. For the first time, the event has been organised in a four-venue format. The inaugural ceremony and seminars will be held at Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre; Exhibition at Helipad Exhibition Centre; Live demonstrations at Sabarmati River Front and ship visits for public at Porbandar. The first three days (October 18 to 20) will be business days, while the last two days (October 21 & 22) have been reserved for public. DefExpo for Indian companies DefExpo 2022 will be the first-ever edition exclusively for Indian companies. Indian companies, Indian subsidiaries of Foreign OEMs, Division of company registered in India, Exhibitor having Joint Venture with an Indian company will be considered as Indian participants. The DefExpo 2022 will also mark the celebration of one year of the formation of the seven new defence companies, carved out of the erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board. All these companies will participate in DefExpo for the first time. 451 partnerships in terms of MoUs, Transfer of Technology agreements and product launches, almost double than the last edition, are expected during the Bandhan ceremony on October 20. The India Pavilion – a marque pavilion of Department of Defence Production – will showcase the maturity of indigenous defence products, start-ups and latest technology, including Artificial Intelligence in defence, while presenting India’s vision for 2047. In addition, there will be an exclusive Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) Pavilion to showcase the prowess of the country’s start-ups carrying out R&D and innovation in futuristic technologies. For the first time, States/Union Territories (UTs) have been invited to set up pavilions at the event. The Raksha Mantri emphasised that with this new initiative, States/UTs will get an opportunity to participate in nation building by attracting investment and bolstering their potential of indigenous aerospace & defence manufacturing. International participation Seventy five (75) countries will be participating in DefExpo 2022. The Raksha Mantri will host the second India-Africa Defence Dialogue (IADD) on October 18, while the Indian Ocean Region plus (IOR+) conclave will take place on October 19. More than 53 African countries have been invited for IADD and 44 for IOR+ conclave. Several Defence Ministers from Africa and the IOR+ region have confirmed their participation. “IADD and IOR+ Conclave will be two very important events for promoting peace, security, prosperity & defence cooperation throughout the region and establishing new defence and industrial partnerships,” Shri Rajnath Singh said. Major attractions Live demonstrations showcasing the equipment and skill set of the Armed Forces, DPSUs and Industry will be held on all five days at Sabarmati River Front through active participation and synchronised efforts at all levels. The demonstrations include Sarang Acrobatic display, search & rescue, combat free fall and paratrooper activities. Ship visits have been organised for public by Indian Navy and Indian Coast at Porbandar. Another highlight of the event will be the biggest-ever drone-show by IIT Delhi start-up M/s Botlabs, which is an iDEX winner. Around 1,600 drones will light up the sky during the show on October 19, which will be a public event. For the first time, ‘Invest for Defence’, the first ever marquee event of Ministry of Defence, targeted to promote investment in the defence sector in the country both by the Indian industry as well Foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers, will be held. It will be inaugurated by the Raksha Mantri on October 20.     Defence Secretary conducts bilateral meetings ahead of DefExpo 2022

    GandhiNagar, 17th October 2022: Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar conducted a series of bilateral meetings with visiting dignitaries from friendly foreign countries prior to DefExpo 2022 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. He held a bilateral meeting with Mr Premitha Bandara Tennakoon, State Minister for Defence, Sri Lanka. They discussed a host of ongoing and future defence cooperation issues. The Defence Secretary also met Mr Devendre Gopaul, Permanent Secretary, Mauritius. A number of key bilateral, defence and maritime security issues were deliberated during the meeting. Another bilateral meeting with the United Arab Emirates delegation led by Mr Matar Salem Ali Marran Aldhaheri, Defence Secretary, UAE was held. They reviewed the existing defence cooperation mechanisms and explored the possibilities of furthering defence industrial cooperation between India and UAE. Dr Ajay Kumar later met a Brazilian delegation led by Rear Admiral Vagner Belarmino De Oliveira, Director, Department of Defence Products. They discussed areas of potential defence industrial cooperation between the two countries. The delegations are in Gandhinagar to participate in DefExpo 2022 which will be held between October 18-22, 2022.

    Jazeera Airways adds two A320 Neos in its fleet

    Kuwait,13th October, 2022: Kuwait based Low cost carrier,Jazeera Airways took delivery of its tenth and eleventh A320neo aircraft from Airbus, bringing the airline’s fleet to a total of 19 aircraft from 7 in 2018. These are the first aircraft to be delivered from the airline’s 2021 order book for 20 A320neos and 8 A321neos. The event was attended by officials from the Kuwait Directorate General for Civil Aviation, Ministry of Interior and officials from the French Embassy, and hosted by Chairman Marwan Boodai and Chief Executive Officer Rohit Ramachandran. Speaking to guests onboard the new aircraft, Boodai said, “We are very happy to be taking delivery of the first A320neo aircraft as part of Jazeera’s larger orderbook that will effectively double the fleet size to 35 aircraft by the year 2026 in support of our expansion plans, as well as boost our contribution to Kuwait’s travel sector. “With the challenges of the past two years behind us, Jazeera has returned with a strong performance, offering customers further choiceswith new destinations being opened throughout the year. “We thank the Directorate General for Civil Aviation, regulatory authorities and partners for supporting Jazeera Airways for over 17 years in providing travelers with a reliable travel service.” Jazeera placed the order for the 28 aircraft with Airbus in November 2021. The agreement is valued at US$3.4 billion (KD1.3 billion). Jazeera was the first airline in the Middle East to operate the A320neo. CEO RohitRamachandran, said: “Jazeera is focusing on expanding its fleet with these latest aircraft from our partner Airbus, offering more environmentally friendly neo models, which provide a range of benefits including 18% fuel-saving, quieter engines with 50% less CO2 emissions. “Our growing fleet will support our expansion plans for Q4 2022 and into 2023 with new destinations and increasing frequencies on existing popular routes. The A320neo has already proven itself to be a great airplane for us and we are pleased to work with Airbus and our leasing partners to make these additions to our fleet.”

    Composite Protection for Aircraft Radomes

    AW Feature Why do aircraft need effective Radome protection? In this feature the writer has dwelled upon one of the key elements of aircraft equipment that need to be protected in a very economical and effective solution. By Abhik Pal Radomes are usually large dome-shaped structures, often made up of composite, which protect the radars against rain, sand erosion and particle impact with minimal impact to attenuation of electromagnetic signals being received by the radar. However, being a composite material, they are prone to various types of damages including erosion caused by Foreign Object Debris (FOD) such as rain and sand while flying at speeds of 200-500 mph under demanding weather conditions. Once damaged, radomes need to be removed, assessed, and repaired / replaced. Radomes are high value assets (one A320 Radome costs approx. $80,000 to replace with subsequent downtime involved with repair/ replacing the radome). It is observed that sometimes airlines use a white coating on the damaged portion of the radome as a quick fix. However it is not a fool proof solution as the level of erosion protection offered by paints/coatings is not adequate and specialized equipment is typically required to refinish radomes per the C.M.M., (Component Maintenance Manual) making the coating repair process expensive and time consuming. Therefore, it is desired to have economical and effective solutions available to protect those high value assets that are subject to damage. Polyurethane tapes with adhesive backing provides several advantages over coatings e.g. uniform thickness / weight, no specialized tools are needed for installation, easily repairable with patch tape and repair paste, easily removed if needed, long service life etc. Refer Fig 1 for a representative comparison between coatings and a polyurethane tape (3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tape 8673) during a rain erosion test. Radome Boot: A Radome “boot” is sheet of protective tape thermoformed into the same, curved shape of the radome and is preferred over flat tape which can be difficult to install over curved surfaces. Typical Benefits of Polyurethane Radome Boots: • Radome boots are typically made of an abrasion-resistant polyurethane and are resistant to ultraviolet light. The product is constructed with a durable, solvent-resistant, pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive, and protected with an easy-release liner. • Radome boots provide excellent erosion protection for aircraft, from radomes to navigation light lenses and help keep these vulnerable components looking good between heavy maintenance intervals. • They are usually available in a variety of shapes and colors for many industrial and common aircraft applications (including radomes, wing tips, landing gear pods, etc.) • Typically, they are transparent, paintable and can be applied over painted surfaces and forms a protective barrier between vulnerable surfaces and damaging elements. • Radome boots do not significantly interfere with radar transmissivity. For aircraft radomes, their optimized thickness is virtually invisible to radar. • They are extremely simple and easy to install. Once installed, they establish an excellent erosion barrier. • Radome boots prevent paint and surface erosion, even on the most vulnerable leading surfaces of the aircraft such as radomes, wing tips, wing root fairings, horizontal stabilizer tips, tail fairings, spinners, landing gear components and more. Protective boots provide many years of paint erosion protection, making them a cost-effective aircraft paint and surface protection solution.     AirAsia India commemorates the 90th anniversary of JRD Tata’s first commercial flight

    Delhi, 15th October, 2022: AirAsia India is celebrating the 90th anniversary of JRD Tata’s first commercial flight by hosting a series of digital, on ground, and in-flight engagement activities. An ardent aviator, JRD Tata was the longest-serving chairman of the Tata group and is regarded as the father of civil aviation in India. In addition to being a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, he was also conferred the rank of honorary Air Vice Marshal of the Indian Air Force. JRD Tata piloted the inaugural flight of Tata Air Services, from Karachi to Bombay via Ahmedabad on 15th October 1932, in a single-engine de Havilland Puss Moth, paving the path for civil aviation in India. The inaugural flight is commemorated in the livery commissioned by AirAsia India on its aircraft VT-JRT, dubbed “The Pioneer”. AirAsia India announced the engagement activities through its social media handles, including the ‘#SpotThePioneer’ contest. Participants stand a chance to win a free flight by sharing original photos of ‘The Pioneer’ aircraft on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, tagging @AirAsiaIndia, and using the hashtag #SpotThePioneer.     DRDO to display 430 strategic & tactical weapon systems, defence equipment & technologies in DefExpo2022

    GandhiNagar, 14th October 2022: Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) will display a wide range of 430 products encompassing the strategic and tactical weapon systems, defence equipment and technologies developed in DefExpo 2022 being held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat from October 18 – 22, 2022. The major theme for this year’s DRDO participation is based on 3D (DRDO, Designed and Developed) ecosphere which will highlight its strong linkages with both Industry as well as Academia. Further, it will showcase the advancements in technologies made by its laboratories as well as its partnerships with the industry, in recent years while representing a high level of indigenousness in advanced and futuristic defence products & technologies that contribute towards Aatmanirbharta in Defence. DefExpo2022, a premier biennial event of the Ministry of Defence, is being held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat from October 18 – 22, 2022. The 12th edition of Asia’s largest defence event will be highlighting the theme ‘Path to Pride’ aligned with ‘India at 75’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, encouraging the industry as well as the citizens to join in and contribute towards nation building. These 17 zones are namely Engines & Propulsion, Aerospace & Aeronautics (UAVs, fighter aircrafts, aircraft for surveillance etc.), Sensors, Devices & Advanced Electronics, Naval Weapons & Systems (EW systems and Sensors), Armoured Vehicles & Land Systems, Armament, Guns & Ammunition, Materials, Missiles (Cruise, MBRLs, AAM, ATGM & MRSAM), BrahMos, Industry Partners in R&D (17 Partners-3 Start-ups &14 MSMEs), Soldier Support and Dual Use Technologies (Soldier support, LS products, Fire protection, Firefighting, Fuel & Energy, Food products etc.), Experience Zone (Simulator, Virtual Reality and Audio-Visual), Software AI & Cyber, Academic Zone, Academic Outreach, Industry Outreach and Public Interface. This year, several technologies developed for land based, naval and air-based systems will be showcased through experience zones – a closed room immersive cinematic experience. In a first, Advanced Combat Aircraft (AMCA) simulator will also be made available to experience, among other augmented and virtual reality Naval, Land and Air product simulators. A holographic deck providing a 3D experience of over 30 defence products will be present at the hall to gain insights into the intricacies of weapon designs. Over a sprawling 1200 sq. mtr. outdoor display, 18 Outdoor static exhibits (actual products) will be also put on display at the Helipad Exhibition Centre. These include Border Surveillance System (BOSS), Laser Fence System(LFS), IRDE Tableau, BrahMos Air Version Missile, Mobile Autonomous Launcher(MAL) for BrahMos, CBRN Water Purification System, Infantry Combat Vehicle with Composite Hull (CICV), Advanced Composites Modular Bridge System(ACMBS), 155mmX52 Cal Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), CBRN Water Purification System, CBRN Recce Vehicles, 70 T Tank Transporter, Wheeled Armoured Platform(WhAP), Prahar Missile, Rudram III Missile, Quick reaction Surface to Air Missile(QRSAM), Medium Range Surface to Air Missile(MRSAM), Mounted Gun System(MSG), Unmanned Ground Mobile Platform(UGMP). DRDO will present Live Demo as well as Static Display of equipment at the Sabarmati River Front. 5 Live demo of DRDO equipment will be put on display namely – Portable Diver Detection Sonar (PDDS) with Electro Optic System (EOS), Imaging Sonar ‘CHITR’, Autonomous Survey Vehicle – Inland, Autonomous Survey Vehicle -Coastal (ASV- Coastal) and Weapon Mounted Surface Vehicle. Whereas 6 static displays of DRDO equipment presented will be AIR Independent Propulsion System, Virtual Reality based counter measure deployment simulator, TAL Torpedo, Portable Diver Detection Sonar, Wet End Unit, Counter Drone System for IN – D4 Radar, Soft Kill System and Hard Kill System, and Passive IRSS Device. And finally, India Pavilion in the Helipad Exhibition Centre will be displaying a combined strength of DRDO along with public and private sectors. DRDO will put its 22 products on static display. These high-value products will be displayed in the form of actual products and will include – VIBHAV- Anti Tank Point Attack Munition, VISHAL- Anti Tank Bar Mine, PRACHAND- Anti Tank, 9 x 19 mm Machine Pistol- ASMI, Mine Field marking Equipment Mk II, Light Tank, Daksh Defuser, MBT Arjun Mk-1A, Light Machine Gun, Pralay, QRSAM, Carbine- 5.56x 45 mm, AIP System- Air Independent Propulsion, TAPAS, ASTRA Mk-I, LCA Mk2 amongst others. A seminar conducted by DRDO on the theme ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Defence R&D: Synergistic Approach’ will be held at the Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre in the forenoon session on 20 October 2022. This will be chaired by Hon’ble Raksha Mantri. Winners of Dare to Dream 3 will be awarded by Hon’ble RM. DRDO will exchange MOU with six IITs and Bharathihar University for establishing new DIA-CoEs in presence of Hon’ble RM. Dare to Dream 4 contest will also be declared open by Hon’ble RM. Hon’ble RRM will release a few monographs and policies. Over the span of the exhibition, the participants and attendees will witness a string of major events, seminars, and discussions.     SAEINDIA Conducts Sustainable Multimodal Mobility Conference,sets agenda for the future of mobility

    Bengaluru, October 12th , 2022: The country’s leading resource for mobility technology SAEINDIA (the Society of Automotive Engineers INDIA) , conducted 10th edition of SAEINDIA International Mobility Conference (SIIMC 2022), which is the first ever International Sustainable Multimodal Mobility Conference.
