Arunachal Pradesh getsits first Greenfield airport at Itanagar

New Delhi, 19th November, 2022: The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi inaugurated the Donyi Polo Airport at Itanagar in Arunachal Pradeshin on 19th November 2022. Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of Law & Justice said, “Opening of this airport will be a significant step towards boosting connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh. The dream of having an airport in the capital city of the state is coming true today. The PM said “The Donyi Polo Airport is becoming a witness to the history and culture of Arunachal Pradesh. This airport will be the fourth operational airport for state.With the development of the new airport infrastructure,huge opportunities in the field of cargo services will be created.” Considering the importance of air connectivity to the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh, a Greenfield airport has been developed on 694 acres of land at Hollongi, 25 kms from Itanagar. Developed at an estimated cost of Rs. 645 cr, the airport is equipped to handle 300 passengers during peak hours. With 2300m runway, the airport is suitable for operation of A- 320 type of aircraft. The terminal of the airport will be an energy efficient building with provision of balanced use of glazing & wall panelling along with insulated roof, glazing & wall panels. The airport is equipped with LED lights in all areas and energy efficient motor/drives for AHUs, AC compressors, conveyors, pumps etc. Sewage treatment plant will allow use of treated water for horticulture purposes. “Work is also in progress for installation of Solar power plant of 150 KWp to use renewable energy in future. Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar is situated in the South-Western part of Arunachal Pradesh bordering Assam State, hence the airport will have a wide catchment area including South-Western parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Northern parts of Assam. The airport will serve a population of over 20 lakhs of several adjoining districts like KurungKumey, KraDaadi, Lower Subansiri, East Kameng, PakkeKessang&Kamle of Arunachal Pradesh and Biswanath& Lakhimpur districts of Assam. The airport will act as a catalyst for the growth of trade and tourism in the region and also provide an opportunity for local produce like the world-famous orchids of Arunachal Pradesh to reach any part of India within hours.

Bengaluru gets its swanky garden-themed terminal 2 airport for international operations

11th Nov 2022,Bengaluru: The tech city of India, Bengaluru got its much awaited airport as Terminal 2. Prime Minister inaugurated the Terminal 2 of Kempegowda International Airport at Bengaluru today, built at a cost of around Rs. 5000 crore. The terminal will double the passenger handling capacity of the airport to 5-6 crore passengers per annum, from the current capacity of about 2.5 crore. Terminal 2 is designed as a tribute to the Garden city of Bengaluru and the passenger experience is meant to be a “walk in the garden”. Passengers will travel through 10,000+ sq mts of green walls, hanging gardens and outdoor gardens. The Airport has already established a benchmark in sustainability with 100% usage of renewable energy across the campus. Terminal 2 has been created with sustainability principles woven into the design. Based on the sustainability initiatives, Terminal 2 will be the largest terminal in the world to be pre certified platinum rating by US GBC (Green Building Council) prior to commencing operations. The theme of ‘Naurasa’ unites all the commissioned artworks for Terminal 2. The artworks reflect the heritage and culture of Karnataka as well as the broader Indian ethos. Overall, the design and architecture of Terminal 2 have been influenced by four guiding principles: Terminal in a garden, sustainability, technology and art & culture. All these facets showcase T2 as a terminal that is modern yet rooted in nature and offers a memorable ‘destination’ experience to all travellers. The new Greenfield airport at Bengaluru had commenced its operation w.e.f. 24.05.2008 with the project cost of approx. Rs. 2470 crore, constructed on approx. 4008 acres of land. The airport was re-designated as Kempegowda International Airport on 17th July 2013. Current connectivity of the airport + capacity+ pax being catered to At present, there are 36 Airlines operating from Bangalore airport connecting to 76 domestic and 25 international destinations. The present designated capacity of Terminal1 (T1) spread across the area of 1,63,535 sqm is 26.5 Millions Passenger Per Anum (MPPA), stretchable to 33.3 MPPA (Pax handled in FY 19-20). Future connectivity projections and hence need of new terminal BIAL expects that annual traffic will grow beyond 50 million in FY’26 and would cross 60 million by FY’28. Newly constructed Terminal 2 of the airport, having area of 2,55,645 sqm, will have 25 MPPA designated capacity taking the total designated capacity of T1+T2 to 51.5 MPPA stretchable to 60 MPPA depending on peak-spreading and average pax / ATM. The augmented capacity will enable to cater to the to the growth in passenger footfall in near future.

AAI observed Vigilance Awareness Week 2022

New Delhi,07th November, 2022: Airports Authority of India observed Vigilance Awareness Week 2022 from 31st October to 06th November 2022, with the theme “Corruption Free India for a Developed Nation” across all its airports and establishments. The event was chaired by Sanjeev Kumar, Chairman, AAI and attended by Amal Garg, IRS, CVO, AAI and Board Members of AAI i.e. A K Pathak, Member (Planning & HR)& K. Vinayak Rao, Member (Finance) alongwith other senior officers of AAI. Integrity Pledge was administered by the Chairman AAI to 60 Officers (approx.) on this occasion. The Chairman, AAI laid emphasis on importance of Vigilance in effective functioning of the organization. He called upon everyone to participate in the activities of VAW 2022 with earnestness and sincerity. Amal Garg, CVO, AAI mentioned about the achievements of Vigilance Department during the last one year. He brought out that AAI is marching ahead with resoluteness for”Corruption Free India for a Developed Nation”. He called upon all the employees to actively participate in the movement against corruption to achieve the mandate of the Commission in letter & spirit. During the vigilance awareness week various activities like elocution, debate, essay, quiz, drawing and slogan competition, walkathons were conducted for employees and students across all airports and establishments to sensitise employees, passengers and children regarding importance of vigilance and evils of corruption. Integrity pledge counters were setup at airports to administer integrity pledge to all stakeholders.

AAI hosts CANSO Asia Pacific Conference 2022 In Goa

Goa, India, 2nd Nov 2022: This week, Air Traffic Management (ATM) leaders from across the region are gathering in Goa for the CANSO Asia Pacific Conference 2022 (APAC) – hosted by Airports Authority of India. This year’s conference will be held from 1st Nov to 3rd Nov under the theme “Think Global, Collaborate Regional, Accomplish Local.”Across the three days, delegates and exhibitors from the Asia Pacific region and beyond will be discussing and collaborating on the key issues that will help shape the future of Asia’s aviation industry and turn the Complete Air Traffic System (CATS) Global Council’s vision for the skies of 2045 into a reality.As Poh Theen Soh, CANSO Director, Asia Pacific Affairs, stated: “With air travel recovering, it is now time to look beyond COVID-19 and to the future. Tuticorin Airport undergoing up-gradation for better passenger services

Delhi,9th Sept 2022: In order to cater the rising passenger traffic and the demand for better services and connections, Airport Authority of India’s Tuticorin Airport in Tamil Nadu is undergoing major up-gradation. It which includes the extension of Runway for operation of A-321 type of aircraft, construction of new apron, new terminal building, technical Block cum control tower & new fire station at a cost of Rs. 381 crores. Spread over an area of 13500sqm, the new terminal building will be able to handle 600 passengers during peak hours. The building will be equipped with all the modern facilities and passenger amenities with provision of two aerobridges along with car parking facilities and new approach road. Inspired by the famous Chettinad houses of the region, the intuitive form of the new terminal will create a unique architectural identity in southern region and will add a new dimension to the terminal design. Strong references to the local culture and traditional architecture will be expressed by the building’s architecture. The interiors of the building reflect the colors and culture of the city through materials and textures in a contemporary manner. The new terminal will be a four-star GRIHA rated energy efficient building with sustainability features. The airport development project also includes widening extension and strengthening work of existing runway, making airport suitable for operation of A-321 type of aircraft. Construction of new ATC tower cum technical block, fire station, isolation bay, and five aircraft parking bays to park A-321 type of aircraft is also part of the project. Tuticorin is the only airport located beyond Madurai in southern Tamil Nadu region. Up-gradation of the airport will not only fulfil the demand of local community for enhanced passenger services but will also promote trade & tourism in Tuticorin and neighbouring districts like Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari. The project for up-gradation and expansion of the airport is likely to be completed by December 2023.

AAI and Swedan based LFV Air Navigation Services Signs MoU to explore smart aviation solutions

New Delhi, 26th August 2022: Airports Authority of India and LFV Air Navigation Services of Sweden (LUFTFARTSVERKET) signs an MoU to jointly explore smart aviation solutions for the Indian airports. The two air navigation service providers, India and Sweden has demonstrated capabilities in building and operationalizing the next generation of sustainable aviation technology. This MoU shall pave the way for bi-lateral exchange of aviation expertise and technology between the two countries. It will allow the Indian companies to accelerate growth while leveraging Swedish innovation and expertise. Under the aegis of the MoU, the companies can collaborate in areas of mutual interest The MoU was signed by M. Suresh, Member (Air Navigation Services), AAI and Magnus Corell, Deputy Director General, LFV Sweden in the presence of The event was attended by Shri Sanjeev Kumar, Chairman, AAI; Ms. MalinCederfeldtÖstberg, State Secretary, Ministry of Infrastructure, Government of Sweden, H.E. Klas Molin, the Ambassador of Sweden to India and H.E. Tanmaya Lal, the Ambassador of India to Sweden. The event was attended by senior officials from AAI, LFV, Embassy of Sweden, New Delhi, and Business Sweden –The Swedish Trade & Invest council. Acknowledging the pressing need for rapid development concerning next-generation smart airports and the necessity to build sustainable transport systems, both parties consented to the following elements of the MoU: • Exchange of aviation knowledge and technical transfer program • Promote close and friendly relations between the two agencies • Aim to expand technical cooperation in airports • Support the development of a safe, secure, sustainable, and efficient aviation sector • Positive contributions in promoting bilateral and international trade Sanjeev Kumar, Chairman, Airports Authority of India, congratulated the Govt of India and the Govt of Sweden for taking this initiative of a collaborative effort towards strengthening India’s efforts for the development of an efficient, safe, secure and sustainable aviation sector. He expressed confidence that the mutual exchange in civil aviation between AAI and LFV Sweden will go a long way in building and operationalization of next generation of smart and sustainable aviation technology. Klas Molin, Ambassador of Sweden to India, talked about the long-standing collaboration between India and Sweden. “We are looking forward to this addition to the already expansive India-Sweden collaboration, which already include sustainability, health, innovation, energy, and will now extend to civil aviation. I’m looking forward to seeing how the MoU can foster more opportunities for Sweden and India to explore climate-smart solutions within the aviation sector.” While delivering his address, Tanmaya Lal, Ambassador of India to Sweden mentioned that “India Sweden partnership is on the upswing. This MoU covers one more new ground and will facilitate technology collaborations to improve safety, sustainability and efficiency in the aviation sector. This is an important development also in the context of the booming regional air connectivity in India.” Cooperation areas and plan of activity AAI and LFV, both Government agencies of India and Sweden respectively, will jointly collaborate on the following co-operation areas: 1. Air Traffic Management 2. Air Traffic Control 3. Remote Airport Management and Traffic Control 4. Airspace Design and Planning 5. Airport Design and Infrastructure 6. Digitalized Airport and Aviation 7. Capability and Training 8. Sustainable Airports and Aviation 9. Processes for pilots 10. Processes for scale-up A Joint Working Group shall be organized to prioritize interest areas and drive collaboration between the two countries. This MoU will play a crucial role in furthering government-to-government engagements between India and Sweden in the Aviation sector in addition to other existing engagements such as sustainability, healthcare, innovation, energy, and infrastructure etc.

Kolhapur Airport to get new terminal building with enhanced capacity and world-class facilities

Delhi: 18th August 2022: Considering the tremendous passenger traffic growth at the Kolhapur airport, Airports Authority of India has undertaken the work for developing the airport for enhanced capacity. The development project includes construction of a new terminal building, strengthening of existing runway, extension of runway, construction of new apron and isolation bay. Kolhapur Airport has been identified for RCS operations under UDAN scheme and is presently connected to Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai and Tirupati. Recently Airport Aerodrome license has been upgraded to 24*7 flight operations. The new terminal building is being constructed in an area of 4000 sqm and will be able to process 300 passengers during peak hours. With 10 check-in counters, the Terminal will be equipped with all modern passenger amenities. The building will be a Four-Star GRIHA rated energy efficient building with sustainability features.The interiors of the terminal building will reflect the art and culture of local culture & heritage. The big archways at the front façade of the new terminal building is influenced and derived from the commonly used arches in the heritage structures like Maharaja Palace, Bhavani Mandap, Panhala Fort of Kolhapur city. More than 60% of the work for extension of terminal building is complete and the building will be ready by 31stMarch 2023. Work of upgrading of the airside facilities is completed. Apart from this, a new Air Traffic Control Tower is also being constructed to cater for future traffic growth. Parking area with capacity for 110 car, 10 buses are also part of the development activities. Kolhapur city is situated on the banks of Panchganga river and is surrounded by Sahyadri mountain ranges. It is a city known for its historical forts, temples and royal places of erstwhile royals. Kolhapur is one of the most agriculturally advanced districts in Maharashtra and is known for being a leading district in agro based industry. It is also a front runner for manufacturing engineering products, refined sugar and textiles. The new world-class terminal building of the airport will enhance the connectivity to this industrial city, boosting tourism industry of the region. The increased connectivity will not only create new employment opportunities for the local community provide access to better educational and medical facilities.

ICAD Awarded The Master System Integration Consultancy Project For Noida International Airport

June 23, 2022 New Delhi: Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) has selected ICAD as the Master System Integrator for Noida International Airport (NIA). ICAD has successfully completed over 350 large scale technology projects in the Middle East & Africa. YIAPL CEO Christoph Schnellmann said,“We are delighted to partner with ICAD for Master System Integration Consultancy (MSI) at Noida International Airport. With the award of this MSI contract, Noida International Airport will witness a rapid increase in the pace to deliver an airport infrastructure with a capacity of 1.2 crore passengers annually, by 2024.” ICAD Group CEO Ghassan Sayegh said, “It is an honour for us to be entrusted with the MSI Consultancy for the Noida International Airport. Greenfield Airport at Hirasar (Rajkot) to boost industrial growth in Saurashtra Region

New Delhi, 10th June 2022 : To cater the growing population of the fourthlargest city in the state of Gujarat and increasing flow of air traffic in this region, Airports Authority of India has undertaken the work for construction of New Greenfield Airport, Rajkot in Gujarat. With the project cost of Rs. 1405 crores, the new airport is envisioned to be a transportation hub for people traveling abroad from the state. Spread over 2534acres, a new greenfield airport has been planned with modern facilities and conveniences for the travellers with increased number of counters and other necessary facilities. The location of new airport is approximately 30 kms from Rajkot city and on Rajkot-Ahmadabad highway. With total built-up area of 23,000 sqm excluding basement, the terminal building of this new airport will be capable to handle 1800 passengers during peak hours. The terminal will be equipped with state-of-the-art passenger facilities, four passenger boarding bridges, three conveyor belts and 20 check-in counters along with modern firefighting and fire alarm system. The city side area of the airport will also be developed for adequate parking facilities for car, taxi and buses along with landscaping. Runway length is planned for 3040 m for serving AB-321type of aircraft which will be capable of parking 14 aircraft at a time. The terminal façade design is influenced from the existing Palaces of Rajkot like the Ranjit Vilas Palace, integrating traditional elements into a contemporary form. An outer skin of traditional Jalis of Palaces is provided to minimize the heat gain inside building. The terminal will depict various artforms including dandiya dance through its dynamic external façade and splendid interiors. Rajkot is famous for its’ golden jewellery and filigree work and that has inspired the exterior panel work at drop-off area of city side kerb. More than 82% of earth work and 80% of Runway and other pavement works have been completed. The work for new terminal building & ATC Tower is also in progress. To commission the airport, an interim terminal building of size 60m x 60m capable of handling 300 passengers per hour is also in progress. The present progress of the total project is 45%. It is expected that the new airport will be ready for operation by March 2023. Rajkot is effectively contributing to the economy of India through its small scale and heavy industries. The city is playing an important role in complex supply chains with global perspective, which is expected to grow exponentially. Air connectivity to the international market will boost the industrial growth, which in turn will generate new employment opportunities. Apart from this, the new airport will come up with lots of commercial development. This will boost travel-logistics, hotel industry, restaurants, warehouse-Cargo handling and clearing business etc. and many more. In the PM Gati Shakti’s spirit of inclusive multi-modal connectivity, the Hirasar Airport is accessed from the National Highway NH-27. A clover -leaf flyover is planned on the highway for unhindered access to the airport. Being located on Rajkot-Ahmadabad highway, this airport will aim to reduce time and cost related to logistics for multiple industries in the region. More Importantly, the ceramic industry of Morbi and other industries of Jamnagar also depend on Rajkot for air connectivity. The plans to modernize and beautify the ancient city of Rajkot are already in place and all such infrastructure development projects including construction of greenfield airport will help promote the local business houses adding economic wealth to the country.

Surat Airport gearing up for holistic development with world-class facilities

New Delhi, 1st June 2022: Surat, the financial capital of Gujarat and hub for diamond and textile business in India attracts air travelers in large numbers. Considering the magnificent rise in passenger traffic, AAI is extensively working towards the holistic development of the airport with a project cost of Rs 353 Crores. The development project includes extension of existing terminal building from 8474 sqm to25520 sqm. In addition to the extension of terminal building, the expansion of apron from five parking bays to 18 Parking bays and construction of parallel taxi track(2905mX30m) work is also in progress. After completion of project, the new state-of –the-art extended terminal building will be capable of handling 1200 Domestic and 600 International passengers’ during peak hours making the annual passenger capacity of 2.6 Million. Equipped with all modern passenger amenities, the terminal building will have 20 check-in counters, five aero bridges, In-Line baggage handling system,five conveyor belts for arriving passengers. The new terminal building will also have a parking area with capacityfor475cars. The terminal will be a 4-Star GRIHA rated energy efficient building with sustainability features. The interiors of the terminal building will reflect the art and culture of Gujarat.More than 58% of the work for extension of terminal building is completed and the building will be ready by 31st December 2022. Surat Airport facilitates to a large number of business community across the country, as it is directly connected to 16 cities across the country. The new world-class terminal building of the airport will enhance the connectivity to this industrial City, giving impetus to the overall growth of the region.

The front cover highlights three different images, first for the Union Civil Aviation Minister ….. who is leading from the front to steer Indian Civil Aviation sector to witness one of the most interesting phases. He is also facing most tumultuous timing due to the ongoing financial stress in the Aviation sector due to ATF rising cost and long airspace restrictions resulting in mounting losses for Indian carriers. Despite of all the ground level challenges,the minister is addressing new things on regular basis which keeps the sector motivated. We have featured many such developmental works in this edition done under his guidance which will be interesting to read.

Our lead story on “ The West War” is another important feature which covers the ground level reality of the challenges faced by the Aviation sector. Its though time ahead and we believe it will pass soon .
