Air India ’s fogcare initiative to help passengers affected by fog delays this winter

Gurugram, 27 December 2023: Air India has announced that passengers flying to and from Delhi IGI airport during the winter season will be allowed to reschedule or cancel their bookings at no extra cost if their flight is likely to be affected by major fog delays. This is part of its FogCare initiative introduced last winter. Air India will provide proactive assistance to affected passengers and offer them easy options to reschedule or cancel their ticket at no extra cost. “The FogCare initiative is a sincere effort to minimise inconvenience to guests whose flights are likely to get affected by fog. It will also help maintain network schedule integrity,” said Rajesh Dogra, Chief Customer Experience Officer, Air India. Passengers of these flights will be kept updated with flight-specific advisories and offered easy options in advance to ease their travel experience.

LAX Prepares for Busy Winter Holiday Travel Period

Los Angeles, CA, 22nd Dec 2023: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is wrapping up the year with an anticipated busy winter holiday travel period. The airport is expecting more than 4 million passengers to use the airport between December 14 and January 3, a 12% increase compared to the same period last year. “We are anticipating a daily average of 211,000 passengers to pass through LAX over the 21-day winter holiday travel period,” said Beatrice Hsu, Interim CEO of Los Angeles World Airports. “While our airport will be busier than usual, there are several ways to plan ahead and avoid the hassles that often accompany holiday travel. We encourage guests to arrive early, pre-book parking at FlyLAX.com, and take advantage of the LAX Order Now service to skip the wait for concessions.” Vehicle traffic in the Central Terminal Area (CTA) is expected to be heavy, with an average of more than 93,000 vehicles expected daily during the holiday period. Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) Traffic Control Officers will help direct traffic on the airport perimeter roadways and Airport Police Traffic Control Officers will direct vehicles in the CTA roadway. Due to increased airport traffic and parking garages approaching full capacity, guests are encouraged to reserve a parking space in advance at Parking.FLYLAX.com. The new LAX Budget Parking facility, LAX Economy Parking, and CTA garages offer pre-booking options. For savings on general and premium parking in the CTA garages, guests can use the promo code MERRY10 to receive a 10% discount. This offer is valid until December 31, 2023.

Air India Express to connect Gwalior with direct flights to Delhi and Bengaluru

22-December-2023, New Delhi: Air India Express, announces the commencement of new routes from Gwalior to two major metropolitan cities – Gwalior to Delhi and Gwalior to Bengaluru, starting January 16th. The airline will operate daily direct flights on these routes, significantly improving the connectivity to and from Gwalior. This comes less than a month after the airline started operations from the city with direct connectivity to Hyderabad. The inaugural flight on the Bengaluru-Gwalior route, IX 1590, is set to depart on January 16, 2024, at 05:10 hours, reaching Gwalior at 07:45 hours. The return flight, IX 1592, will leave Gwalior at 15:35 hours, arriving in Bengaluru at 18:10 hours. IX 1590 on the Gwalior-Delhi route will depart Gwalior at 08:15 hours, landing in Delhi at 09:20 hours. Subsequently, from Delhi, IX 1592 departs at 13:35 hours, touching down in Gwalior at 15:00 hours. Speaking about the expansion, Ankur Garg, Chief Commercial Officer, Air India Express, said “At Air India Express, our commitment is to fortify the connectivity of New India, with a particular focus on our robust tier 2 & 3 cities. The launch of services from Gwalior to New Delhi and Bengaluru symbolises this pledge. Beyond these direct flights, we are establishing connections from Gwalior to 21 key destinations, accessible via convenient one-stop itineraries through Bengaluru, New Delhi, and Hyderabad. Furthermore, the New Delhi – Gwalior flight extends convenient via-connectivity for the people of Gwalior to the city of Ayodhya.”

Vistara to boost international connectivity from Mumbai

Mumbai, 20th Dec 2023: Vistara will boost international connectivity from Mumbai by increasing flight frequencies to two popular destinations – London Heathrow and Singapore. Commencing on 1 March 2024, Vistara will increase the flight frequency between Mumbai and London Heathrow from 4x weekly to daily flights. Additionally, a second daily flight between Mumbai and Singapore will be introduced starting 1 February 2024. Vistara connects Mumbai to a total of 14 international destinations, including Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, Colombo, Dammam, Dhaka, Doha, Dubai, Frankfurt, Jeddah, London Heathrow, Male, Mauritius, Muscat, and Singapore.

Jyotiraditya Scindia chairs Advisory Group Meeting with Airport Operators

New Delhi, 20th Nov 2023: Union Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia held an Advisory Group Meeting with Airport Operators on 19th December, 2023. With the upcoming season in mind, the Minister emphasized on the importance of preventing congestion at airports. He assured that the ministry is proactively implementing all possible measures to facilitate a smooth and time-saving travel experience for passengers during this period. In the meeting, the Minister listened to the queries and suggestions from operators and guided them to ensure optimal operations for the convenience of passengers. An important topic of the discussion was the promotion of ‘DigiYatra’ to enhance the conversion rate from manual to digital check-ins and entry gate processes, ensuring hassle-free and swift passenger movement. Currently, the facility is available for domestic passengers at 13 airports of the country including: Lucknow, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Jaipur, Guwahati, Delhi, Bangalore, Varanasi, Vijayawada, Pune, Hyderabad, and Kolkata airports. In the discussion, the suggestion of integrating ‘DigiYatra’ for international passenger access at both departure and arrival. To explore best practices, the airport operators were also tasked with presenting biometric enabled models being successfully used in other countries. Moving ahead, the Minister also reviewed the Capital Expenditure target of all airport operators, aligning it with the actuals obtained in Q3. The meeting was attended by all airport operators including GMR Airports, Adani Airports, BIAL, Cochin Airport and the Airports Authority of India. The Secretary Civil Aviation, Vumlunmang Vualnam, DG BCAS, Zulfiqar Hasan, DG DGCA, Vikram Devdutt and other Joint secretaries and senior officials of the Ministry were also present in the meeting.

Cabinet approves declaration of Surat Airport as an International Airport

Surat, 15th Nov 2023: The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the proposal to declare Surat Airport as an International Airport. Surat Airport will not only become a gateway for international travelers but also facilitate seamless export-import operations for the thriving diamond and textile – industries. This strategic move promises to unlock unprecedented economic potential, making Surat a key player in the international aviation landscape and fostering a new era of prosperity for the region. Latest developments also confirms that will have direct international flights to Bangkok, Malaysia, and Singapore have been revealed, with operations scheduled to begin in 2024 from Surat airport (STV). Sanjay Ezhava, President of the Surat Airport Action Committee (SAAC), has also announced that Surat Airport is on track to establish direct air connectivity with Bangkok and other prominent destinations, including Malaysia and Singapore, starting from February 2024. Surat, a rapidly growing city in India, has demonstrated remarkable economic prowess and industrial development. Elevating Surat Airport to international status is paramount for enhancing economic growth, attracting foreign investment, and bolstering diplomatic ties. With a surge in passenger traffic and cargo operations, the airport’s international designation will provide a crucial impetus for regional development.

Foundation Stone for New Terminal Building at Rajahmundry Airport to be laid on 10th December

Delhi, 9th Dec 2023: Rajahmundry, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, will soon get enhanced air travel facilities and modern amenities. The foundation stone for a new Terminal Building will be laid on 10th December, 2023 by Civil Aviation Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia and YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, in the presence of Gen. (Dr.) V. K. Singh (Retd), Minister of State for Civil Aviation; Road Transport and Highways, among other dignitaries. Rajahmundry is one of the dynamic cities of India and is the ‘Cultural Capital of Andhra Pradesh’. The city in Andhra Pradesh holds significant potential for air travel due to its rich cultural heritage, trade & tourist attractions. The development of air travel infrastructure can greatly enhance its connectivity & accessibility. Considering the rapid growth of passenger traffic and saturation of the existing Terminal building at the Airport, expansion of Terminal building is planned for an additional area of 17,029 sqm. The Rajahmundry Airport expansion will be undertaken at a cost of Rs.350 Crore. After the expansion the total area of the Terminal Building will be 21,094 sqm., capable of serving 2100 passengers during peak hours and 30 lakh passengers annually. Rajahmundry is currently connected to three cities i.e. Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru and handles 126 flight movements per week. The proposed expansion of the airport will have passenger facilities like 28 check-in-counters, four conveyor belts in arrival (conversion of Existing terminal into arrival), eight X-Bis machines, three aerobridges and adequate number of F&B and Retail outlets. Facilities for Divyangjans have also been incorporated in the New Terminal Building as per Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan norms. The city side area of the airport will also be upgraded for parking of 600 (approx) cars. This proposed building is designed to be energy efficient as enough provisions have been made for flow of natural light. Rajahmundry’s rich heritage and cultural offerings coupled with a new Terminal building will make it a popular destination for tourists seeking an authentic Indian experience. The newly upgraded terminal building of the airport will play an important role in the all-round development of the state. This will improve air connectivity and the travellers coming here will get the benefit of improved passenger facilities. This will also provide a new impetus to the industry and economy of the region. The laying of the foundation stone for the New Terminal Building at Rajahmundry Airport signifies a momentous step towards transforming Andhra Pradesh’s aviation sector and establishing Rajahmundry as a premier tourist destination. The state-of-the-art facilities, combined with the architectural grandeur of Andhra Pradesh, will leave a lasting impression on travellers from around the world.

More than 130 lakh people have availed of the benefits of UDAN scheme so far – MoCA

New Delhi, 7th Dec 2023: As widely known, Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), MoCA’s initiative for UDAN was launched to provide connectivity to unserved and underserved airports of the country through revival of the existing airstrips and airports. The scheme would be in operation for a period of ten years. Recently, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation Gen. (Dr) V. K. Singh (Retd) highlighted the salient features of the UDAN scheme are as under: i) The Regional Connectivity Scheme – UDAN is designed to enable air operations on underserved / unserved routes connecting regional areas, promote balanced regional growth and make flying affordable for masses. ii) Financial incentives in terms of concessions from Central, State Governments and airport operators are extended to Selected Airline Operators to encourage operations from unserved/underserved airports / heliports / water aerodromes and to keep the air fare affordable. iii) Financial Support to the Selected Airline Operators is in the form of Viability Gap Funding (VGF). State Governments provide 20% share towards VGF for RCS flights pertaining to their states. However, the share of VGF for North-Eastern states and the Union Territories is 10%. iv) Excise Duty at the rate of 1% / 2% is levied on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) drawn by Selected Airline Operators at RCS Airports for RCS Flights for a period of three (3) years from the date of commencement. v) Airlines are required to commit certain number of the seats as RCS seats depending on the type and size of aircraft on RCS flights. vi) Regional Connectivity Fund (RCF) is created by a levy on each departure of flights on aircraft having MTOW (Maximum Take-Off Weight) above 40 Tonnes except for the departure of flights on routes in North East Region, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep Islands. vii) For balanced regional growth, route allocations are spread equitably across five regions in the country viz. North, South, East, West and North East (with a cap of 30% in a given region). viii) RCS-UDAN is a market driven scheme. Interested airlines based on their assessment of demand on particular routes submit proposals at the time of bidding under RCS – UDAN. Tenure of the Scheme: The scheme to be applicable for a period of 10 years, subjected to periodic review. VGF support for the RCS route is available for a period of three years only. Type of aircraft / helicopter: The Scheme allows operation through various type of aircraft including sea planes and helicopters. Eligible operators: A valid Scheduled Operator Permit (SOP) or a Scheduled Commuter Operator (SCO) permit for scheduled air transport service (passenger) issued by the DGCA Rs.4500 Crores have been allocated for development of airports in the country under the Scheme, out of which Rs. 3751 Crores have been utilised since inception of the scheme. VGF amounting to Rs. 3020 crores has been disbursed to the Selected Airline Operators as of 28.11.2023. Out of Rs. 97.88 Crores sanctioned to develop the airports in the state of Tamil Nadu, an expenditure of Rs 94.51 crore has been incurred so far. Under the UDAN Scheme, the Government has set a target to operationalise 1000 UDAN routes during the currency of the scheme and to revive/develop 100 unserved & underserved airports/heliports/water aerodromes in the country by 2024 for operation of UDAN flights. 517 RCS routes have so far commenced operations connecting 76 airports, including 9 Heliports & 2 Water Aerodrome. More than 130 lakh people have availed of the benefits of the scheme so far. An amount of Rs. 1000 crore has been allocated under Phase II of the Scheme during the period 2023-26 for development and operationalisation of 50 new airports/heliports/water aerodromes in the country, including Tamil Nadu. BEL receives orders worth Rs. 3,915 Crore

Bengaluru, December 6, 2023: Bharat Electronics Limited received an order of Rs 580 Crore from Indian Army for AMC of Radars. This project will have participation of Indian electronics and associated industries, including MSMEs, which are sub-vendors of BEL. The Company has also received additional orders worth Rs 3,335 Crore since the last disclosure on 15th Sept 2023 and the said orders pertain to AMC for AEW&C system (Airborne Early Warning & Control), Uncooled TI sights, Software Defined Radios, SWIR pay load, AMC for IACCS, Passive Night Vision Binoculars etc. All the equipment manufactured by BEL are part of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ program. With the above, cumulatively BEL has received orders worth Rs 18,298 Crore in the current financial year 2023-24.

The front cover highlights three different images, first for the Union Civil Aviation Minister ….. who is leading from the front to steer Indian Civil Aviation sector to witness one of the most interesting phases. He is also facing most tumultuous timing due to the ongoing financial stress in the Aviation sector due to ATF rising cost and long airspace restrictions resulting in mounting losses for Indian carriers. Despite of all the ground level challenges,the minister is addressing new things on regular basis which keeps the sector motivated. We have featured many such developmental works in this edition done under his guidance which will be interesting to read.

Our lead story on “ The West War” is another important feature which covers the ground level reality of the challenges faced by the Aviation sector. Its though time ahead and we believe it will pass soon .
