Abu Dhabi Air Expo 2022 chooses Etihad Airways as Official Airline Sponsor

25th October 2022,Abu Dhabi: Etihad Airways has been named the official Airline Sponsor of Abu Dhabi Air Expo 2022. The national carrier for Abu Dhabi will be the exclusive sponsor of the anticipated 18,000 attendee event. The airline will also support one of the key panel discussions: Making Aviation Green: Sustainability in the Aviation Ecosystem. The Abu Dhabi Air Expo supports development of Abu Dhabi as an aviation hub for general, business and commercial aviation. The conference will bring together insight and knowledge from local and international stakeholders to deliver engaging content, inspire new thinking and encourage aerospace development by attracting new players to the region. “As the ‘Environmental Airline of the Year’ we are proud to add our voice to the sustainability panel and this critical discussion around the decarbonisation of the aviation industry. We hope to influence others – from industry to individuals – to encourage everyone to play their part in protecting our planet,” said Tony Douglas, Group Chief Executive Officer, Etihad Aviation Group. As the UAE’s national carrier, Etihad operates to more than 70 passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. The airline operates a fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, with the backbone of the fleet being the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Earlier this year, Etihad also introduced the fuel-efficient Airbus A350-1000 to connect with New York, Chicago and London. In the first half of 2022, Etihad carried 4.02 million passengers, over 3 million more than the same time last year . “This has been an excellent year for Etihad with record-breaking results for the first half of the year. Over 80 aircraft from ultra-light to heavy jets will be on display for delegates seeking out a variety of aircraft and aviation-related services. This year’s event will include a new format that divides the exhibition into three main areas: aircraft hangar, chalets and outdoor static display. It will also feature a conference program providing industry thought leaders a forum to share the latest thinking on general aviation and aerospace developments.

Leading munitions company, LAHAB DEFENCE SYSTEMS, will display its full range of medium and large calibre munitions, including its 40x53mm High Velocity, High Explosive grenade launcher munitions, 60mm, 81mm, and 120mm mortars, artillery munitions, 155mm Extended Range, Full Bore, and 122mm rockets, and its MK series of general purpose aircraft munitions. LAHAB LIGHT AMMUNITION will display its full range of small calibre ammunition. From the Platforms & Systems cluster, NIMR, the UAE’s leading producer of armoured vehicles and battle-proven land platforms, will showcase its AJBAN Mk2 4×4 ballistic and blast protected light tactical patrol vehicle, HAFEET Mk2 6×6 armoured vehicle, and JAIS 4×4 Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle. EDGE’s Electronic Warfare & Cyber Technologies cluster capabilities will be represented by UAE’s leading Electronic Warfare and Intelligence solutions provider SIGN4L’s GNSS antijamming system, GPS-PROTECT, its sophisticated NAVCONTROL-G spoofing system, and VPROTECT radio frequency (RF) communication jamming system. AirAsia India commemorates the 90th anniversary of JRD Tata’s first commercial flight

Delhi, 15th October, 2022: AirAsia India is celebrating the 90th anniversary of JRD Tata’s first commercial flight by hosting a series of digital, on ground, and in-flight engagement activities. An ardent aviator, JRD Tata was the longest-serving chairman of the Tata group and is regarded as the father of civil aviation in India. In addition to being a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, he was also conferred the rank of honorary Air Vice Marshal of the Indian Air Force. JRD Tata piloted the inaugural flight of Tata Air Services, from Karachi to Bombay via Ahmedabad on 15th October 1932, in a single-engine de Havilland Puss Moth, paving the path for civil aviation in India. The inaugural flight is commemorated in the livery commissioned by AirAsia India on its aircraft VT-JRT, dubbed “The Pioneer”. AirAsia India announced the engagement activities through its social media handles, including the ‘#SpotThePioneer’ contest. Participants stand a chance to win a free flight by sharing original photos of ‘The Pioneer’ aircraft on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, tagging @AirAsiaIndia, and using the hashtag #SpotThePioneer. The airline is giving themed postcards to flyers, inviting them to write to their loved ones and undertaking to mail the postcards on behalf of its guests, commemorating the airmail carried by JRD Tata on the inaugural flight. The postcard design pays tribute to JRD’s love for writing (he wrote over 40,000 letter in his lifetime), with an image from the Tata Central Archives of JRD at his writing desk and features the 90th anniversary logo and the custom font “Jeh”, inspired by his flourishing handwriting. Guests can also win exclusive merchandise by solving themed ‘Journey of Jeh’ crossword puzzles, using the hashtag #FlyLikeAPioneer and tagging @AirAsiaIndia. To mark the 90th anniversary of the pioneering flight, boarding passes issued on the anniversary also feature the 90th anniversary logo and ‘Jeh’ font while pilots will be paying tribute through announcements to the first licensed commercial pilot in India and the man who gave wings to the nation.

DRDO to display 430 strategic & tactical weapon systems, defence equipment & technologies in DefExpo2022

GandhiNagar, 14th October 2022: Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) will display a wide range of 430 products encompassing the strategic and tactical weapon systems, defence equipment and technologies developed in DefExpo 2022 being held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat from October 18 – 22, 2022. The major theme for this year’s DRDO participation is based on 3D (DRDO, Designed and Developed) ecosphere which will highlight its strong linkages with both Industry as well as Academia. Further, it will showcase the advancements in technologies made by its laboratories as well as its partnerships with the industry, in recent years while representing a high level of indigenousness in advanced and futuristic defence products & technologies that contribute towards Aatmanirbharta in Defence. DefExpo2022, a premier biennial event of the Ministry of Defence, is being held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat from October 18 – 22, 2022. The 12th edition of Asia’s largest defence event will be highlighting the theme ‘Path to Pride’ aligned with ‘India at 75’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, encouraging the industry as well as the citizens to join in and contribute towards nation building. It aims to further the narrative of ‘Make in India, Make for the World’. The overall event will showcase a range of indigenously designed, developed, prototyped, and produced Land, Naval, Aero and Homeland Security systems and technologies. In addition, DRDO will showcase several initiatives to deepen its strategic partnerships with Industry, and Academia. These will include initiatives such as Technology Development Fund, Dare to Dream, DIA- Centres of Excellence and other similar schemes to support academia, Start-ups, MSMEs and large industries to continuously upgrade technology readiness levels of present and futuristic technologies in the country. All these DRDO led initiatives have led to operational readiness of many Indian industries, especially in the areas of systems, radars, sonars, missiles, aircrafts, etc. some of which will be displayed at the DRDO Pavilion, DefExpo22. At DefExp2022, DRDO will provide numerous static displays, live demonstrations, seminars as well as immersive experience zones spread across three locations including the Mahatma Mandir Convention & Exhibition Centre, Helipad Exhibition Centre, and Sabarmati River Front. The venue for DRDO Pavilion is Hall no. 10 of Helipad Exhibition Centre. It will be segmented in 17 display zones of various classes including Immersive Zones and Experience Zones to showcase 376 products. These 17 zones are namely Engines & Propulsion, Aerospace & Aeronautics (UAVs, fighter aircrafts, aircraft for surveillance etc.), Sensors, Devices & Advanced Electronics, Naval Weapons & Systems (EW systems and Sensors), Armoured Vehicles & Land Systems, Armament, Guns & Ammunition, Materials, Missiles (Cruise, MBRLs, AAM, ATGM & MRSAM), BrahMos, Industry Partners in R&D (17 Partners-3 Start-ups &14 MSMEs), Soldier Support and Dual Use Technologies (Soldier support, LS products, Fire protection, Firefighting, Fuel & Energy, Food products etc.), Experience Zone (Simulator, Virtual Reality and Audio-Visual), Software AI & Cyber, Academic Zone, Academic Outreach, Industry Outreach and Public Interface. This year, several technologies developed for land based, naval and air-based systems will be showcased through experience zones – a closed room immersive cinematic experience. In a first, Advanced Combat Aircraft (AMCA) simulator will also be made available to experience, among other augmented and virtual reality Naval, Land and Air product simulators. A holographic deck providing a 3D experience of over 30 defence products will be present at the hall to gain insights into the intricacies of weapon designs. Over a sprawling 1200 sq. mtr. outdoor display, 18 Outdoor static exhibits (actual products) will be also put on display at the Helipad Exhibition Centre. These include Border Surveillance System (BOSS), Laser Fence System(LFS), IRDE Tableau, BrahMos Air Version Missile, Mobile Autonomous Launcher(MAL) for BrahMos, CBRN Water Purification System, Infantry Combat Vehicle with Composite Hull (CICV), Advanced Composites Modular Bridge System(ACMBS), 155mmX52 Cal Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), CBRN Water Purification System, CBRN Recce Vehicles, 70 T Tank Transporter, Wheeled Armoured Platform(WhAP), Prahar Missile, Rudram III Missile, Quick reaction Surface to Air Missile(QRSAM), Medium Range Surface to Air Missile(MRSAM), Mounted Gun System(MSG), Unmanned Ground Mobile Platform(UGMP). DRDO will present Live Demo as well as Static Display of equipment at the Sabarmati River Front. 5 Live demo of DRDO equipment will be put on display namely – Portable Diver Detection Sonar (PDDS) with Electro Optic System (EOS), Imaging Sonar ‘CHITR’, Autonomous Survey Vehicle – Inland, Autonomous Survey Vehicle -Coastal (ASV- Coastal) and Weapon Mounted Surface Vehicle. Whereas 6 static displays of DRDO equipment presented will be AIR Independent Propulsion System, Virtual Reality based counter measure deployment simulator, TAL Torpedo, Portable Diver Detection Sonar, Wet End Unit, Counter Drone System for IN – D4 Radar, Soft Kill System and Hard Kill System, and Passive IRSS Device. And finally, India Pavilion in the Helipad Exhibition Centre will be displaying a combined strength of DRDO along with public and private sectors. DRDO will put its 22 products on static display. These high-value products will be displayed in the form of actual products and will include – VIBHAV- Anti Tank Point Attack Munition, VISHAL- Anti Tank Bar Mine, PRACHAND- Anti Tank, 9 x 19 mm Machine Pistol- ASMI, Mine Field marking Equipment Mk II, Light Tank, Daksh Defuser, MBT Arjun Mk-1A, Light Machine Gun, Pralay, QRSAM, Carbine- 5.56x 45 mm, AIP System- Air Independent Propulsion, TAPAS, ASTRA Mk-I, LCA Mk2 amongst others. A seminar conducted by DRDO on the theme ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Defence R&D: Synergistic Approach’ will be held at the Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre in the forenoon session on 20 October 2022. This will be chaired by Hon’ble Raksha Mantri. Winners of Dare to Dream 3 will be awarded by Hon’ble RM. DRDO will exchange MOU with six IITs and Bharathihar University for establishing new DIA-CoEs in presence of Hon’ble RM. Dare to Dream 4 contest will also be declared open by Hon’ble RM. Hon’ble RRM will release a few monographs and policies. Over the span of the exhibition, the participants and attendees will witness a string of major events, seminars, and discussions. Govt. approves creation of Weapon Systems branch in Indian Air Force

New Delhi, 10th Oct 2022: In a historic step for the Indian Air Force (IAF), Government has approved the creation of a new branch, called the Weapon Systems (WS) branch. The creation of WS branch would entail unification of all weapon system operators under one entity dedicated to the operational employment of all ground-based and specialist airborne weapon systems. The branch would encompass operators in four specialised streams of Surface-to-Surface missiles, Surface-to-Air missiles, Remotely Piloted Aircraft and Weapon System Operators in twin/multi-crew aircraft. The branch will contribute immensely by enhancing the war fighting capability of the Indian Air Force.

Alliance Air starts flights between Bilaspur to Indore

New Delhi.3rd October 2022: Alliance Air has started direct flights between from Bilaspur to Indore. The flight will operate between Bilaspur-Indore-Bilaspur effective 3rd October 2022 (Today). It will operate every Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Sunday on this route. In his address, Jyotiraditya Scindia said “this new air connectivity will facilitate people of both the states and contribute to the economic development of the regions. The Minister further added that the Ministry is working to operationalise 200 destinations including heliports and water aerodromes by 2026. The central government is committed to take the civil aviation sector to newer heights and improve air connectivity in every part of the country. Alliance Air’s Flight 9I 691 will depart from Bilaspur at 1135 hrs. and arrive in Indore at 1325 hrs and Flight 9I 692 will depart from Indore at 1355 hrs. and arrive in Bilaspur at 1545 hrs.

Star Air launches flight to Kolhapur

4th October 2022: Star Air, the aviation arm of Sanjay Ghodawat Group, inaugurated its direct flight services between Mumbai and Kolhapur under the Regional Connectivity Scheme.The launch of Kolhapur sector marks Star Air’s homecoming at its operational base. Commenting on the launch, Shrenik Ghodawat, MD – Star Air, said, “We are pleased to announce our homecoming flight. With the beautiful city of Kolhapur serving as SGG’s operations base, it is a surreal feeling to connect Star Air to its parent company. With the launch of Kolhapur as our 19th destination, it promises easy access to key tourist attractions. The launch of our new destination will not only bolster trade but also strengthen tourism between the cities. We hope to add many more regional cities to the travel map of India in the future.” Star Air will operate thrice a week between Mumbai and Kolhapur on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday to begin with and will plan to expand the frequency to a daily service after observing the passenger response. These scheduled flights plan to offer passengers the most affordable prices under the popular UDAN scheme.

Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retd) appointed as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS)

New Delhi,28th Sept.2022: The Government has appointed Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) who shall also function as Secretary to Government of India, Department of Military Affairs with effect from the date of his assumption of charge and until further orders. In a career spanning over nearly 40 years, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan had held several command, staff and instrumental appointments and had extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir and North-East India. Born on 18th May 1961, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. In the rank of Maj General, the officer had commanded an Infantry Division in the critical Baramula sector in the Northern Command. Later as Lt General, he commanded a corps in the North East and subsequently went to become the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command from September 2019 and held the charge until his retirement from the service in May 2021. In addition to these command appointments, the officer also tenanted important staff appointments including the charge of Director General of Military Operations. Earlier, the officer had also served as a United Nations mission to Angola. The officer superannuated from the Indian Army on 31 May 2021. Even after his retirement from the Army, he continued to contribute to national security and strategic matters. For his distinguished and illustrious service in the Army, Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal.

Vistara Introduces Digital Rostering Solution for its Crew

New Delhi, 26 September 2022: Vistara has implemented a fully automated crew rostering solution for improved management of its 2500+ cabin crew and pilots across the network. Jeppesen, a Boeing Company, has enabled Vistara to develop effective crew rosters that factor in legal compliance, crew availability, lifestyle preferences and training requirements using a dynamic bidding mechanism. The adoption of the new technology is aimed at further improving Vistara’s operational performance as well as enhancing crew lifestyle. Vistara crew are now able to indicate their lifestyle preferences that are then automatically factored into their individual flight rosters. Options ranging from early morning or late evening flights, frequency of layovers, time off from work, preferred night stop stations and specific flights etc. are now available to the crew, thereby allowing them added flexibility in their schedules. Since implementation, the system has proven to be very effective with the majority of crew rosters being positively influenced as per their indicated preferences. Captain Hamish Maxwell, Senior Vice President – Flight Operations, Vistara said “As a relatively young airline born in the digital age, Vistara is rapidly adopting new technologies and automating processes across all our functions to derive more efficiencies and enhance employee experience. Akasa Air adds Agartala and Guwahati to its network

Delhi, 26 September 2022: Akasa Air announced its foray into the eastern cities of India, taking the tally of its destinations to eight cities with the addition of Guwahati as the seventh and Agartala as its eighth destination. These new flights will provide seamless one stop connectivity between Bengaluru and Agartala with no change of aircraft required at Guwahati. To further enhance connectivity on existing sectors, the airline has also announced additional daily flights on the Bengaluru-Chennai route also commencing from October 21, 2022. Akasa Air has been progressively expanding its operations and will be flying along a total of eleven non-stop routes along eight cities – Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Kochi, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Guwahati, and Agartala from October 21, 2022. Further, the airline expects to cross the 300 weekly flights mark by the end of its summer schedule.

The current edition of Aviation World has covered many areas of Aerospace & Defence based on the latest development in the sector. The front cover highlights three different images, first for the Union Civil Aviation Minister ….. who is leading from the front to steer Indian Civil Aviation sector to witness one of the most interesting phases. He is also facing most tumultuous timing due to the ongoing financial stress in the Aviation sector due to ATF rising cost and long airspace restrictions resulting in mounting losses for Indian carriers. Despite of all the ground level challenges,the minister is addressing new things on regular basis which keeps the sector motivated. We have featured many such developmental works in this edition done under his guidance which will be interesting to read.

Our lead story on “ The West War” is another important feature which covers the ground level reality of the challenges faced by the Aviation sector. Its though time ahead and we believe it will pass soon .
