Mumbai Int. Airport completes runway maintenance

Mumbai, 8th May 2026: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), operated by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), has completed its annual runway maintenance programme, reinforcing operational readiness ahead of the monsoon season. Conducted over a six-hour window from 11:00 hours to 17:00 hours, the exercise covered thorough inspection of Runway 09/27 (3448 metres) and Runway 14/32 (2871 metres), both of which are now restored and fully operational. Planned well in advance, the operation was supported by six months of stakeholder coordination, enabling airlines to realign flight schedules in advance. For an airport handling over 950 air traffic movements (ATMs) daily, such preventive maintenance is critical. It ensures runway infrastructure consistently meets the highest safety and operational standards, strengthens drainage systems and safeguards operations during the high-intensity monsoon period. The scope of work included pavement maintenance, electrical checks across Airfield Ground Lighting systems and substations, rubber removal, surface markings and large-scale drain cleaning. Technical teams also inspected runway intersections, over 3,000 runway lights and critical cable networks supporting lighting, information technology and navigational systems to ensure uninterrupted performance.

Emirates unveils a striking new UAE flag livery on its A380

Dubai, 8th May 2026: Emirates unveiled a striking livery of a large UAE flag emblazoned across the fuselage of its iconic Airbus A380 aircraft, the world’s largest commercial passenger aircraft. The new livery on A6-EVG, is an extension of the airline’s iconic tail design, and a powerful tribute to the spirit, ambition and unity of the UAE. This initiative is part of Emirates’ ‘This Flag Will Always Fly’ campaign, responding to the nationwide initiative launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. This initiative called on all citizens and residents to raise the UAE flag as a unifying symbol across society, a shared responsibility and pride in the nation’s strength and cohesion during recent challenges. His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates airline and Group said: “We’re proud to respond to HH Sheikh Mohammad’s call to raise the flag as a tribute to the UAE’s unity and strength. Since our inception, every Emirates aircraft has proudly carried the UAE flag wherever it flies. This new livery is our way of honouring a home that has given us so much, and a nation that stands as proof of what is possible when we collectively choose, every day, to reach higher. There is no greater stage for our flag than in the skies, and no greater privilege for Emirates than to fly it with pride.” The special livery features the colours of the UAE rendered in a bold, eye-catching 3D design that drapes elegantly across both sides of the aircraft. The moving canvas of national pride has already flown to New York and Brisbane and is scheduled to operate to more A380 destinations in the Emirates network, becoming visible from runways, skies and cities around the world. Plans are underway to apply the flag design to an Emirates Boeing 777, the next largest commercial airliner in the sky after the A380. The UAE flag is already a hallmark of every Emirates aircraft, painted across the tails of one of the world’s most recognisable fleets, and carrying the nation’s colours across continents, time zones and cultures each day. The special flag livery is one of many that have marked special national events and commemorations in the UAE. In 2017, the airline featured a customised decal of the late HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE, with a bespoke livery for its 100th A380. The initiative marked the airline’s first initiative for the ‘Year of Zayed’, with 10 aircraft flying the special livery. That same year, the airline revealed the first of 40 aircraft carrying livery designs dedicated to Expo 2020 Dubai.

BIAL introduces integrated smartsystem to strengthen airside operational safety

Bengaluru, 6th May, 2026: Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has introduced an integrated Smart Airside Safety System at BLR Airport, marking a significant step forward in strengthening operational safety and control across critical airside zones. Designed to enhance safety at Cross Service Roads (CSRs), where aircraft and ground vehicle movements intersect, the system brings together AI‑based computer vision, intelligent automation and centralised control to support safe right-of-way management, improve operational efficiency and enable greater precision in airside operations. Cross Service Roads are among the most sensitive areas within airport operations, requiring precise and seamless coordination between aircraft and ground vehicles. Traditionally, right of way protection at these intersections relied on manual or semi manual inset light activation, creating dependencies on human intervention, increasing the risk of delays and limiting operational visibility. To address these challenges, the systemuses a real‑time situational intelligence framework that combines computer‑vision‑based detection of vehicle movement, contextual risk assessment, and automated signalling into a unified operating model. AI‑enabled cameras interpret activity at CSR intersections, identify potential right‑of‑way conflicts, detect non‑compliant movements, and validate zone clearance in real time. Based on these detections, the system triggers automated inset light activation to protect aircraft right‑of‑way and restores normal signalling once the intersection is confirmed clear.A centralised monitoring and analytics platform digitally logs all events, strengthening governance, compliance, and operational control. By embedding technology into operations, the system creates a data-driven separation layer between aircraft and ground vehicles, significantly reducing human error, especially during night and low-visibility conditions. Precision-led signal activation improves traffic flow, minimises unnecessary stoppage and enhances turnaround efficiency. It also establishes a scalable foundation for predictive safety analytics, enabling trend analysis, peak-hour optimisation, compliance mapping and risk forecasting to support continuous improvement and stronger airside governance.
